In 1902, relinquishing her studies, she went abroad and from 1903 until her death lived chiefly in Paris. For many years her secretary and lover was Alice B. Toklas. In Paris, Stein became interested in modern art movements; she encouraged and purchased the work of many new painters, including Picasso and Matisse . During the 1920s, she was the leader of a cultural salon that included such writers as Hemingway , Sherwood Anderson , and F. Scott Fitzgerald Three Lives (1909), short stories in which she explored the mental processes of three women. But her most characteristic and probably most difficult narrative is The Making of Americans (1925). The famous

Add to a Notebook Gertrude Stein Gertrude Stein was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1874, to wealthy German-Jewish immigrants. At the age of three, her family moved first to Vienna and then to Paris. They returned to America in 1878 and settled in Oakland, California. Her mother, Amelia, died of cancer in 1888 and her father, Daniel, died 1891. Stein attended Radcliffe College, where she studied under noted psychologist William James. After leaving Radcliffe, she enrolled at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but left without a degree in 1901. In 1903, Stein moved to Paris: she did not return to the United States for over thirty years. She and her brother Leo, an art critic and painter, took an apartment on the Left Bank. Their apartment, 27 rue de Fleurus, soon became gathering spot for many young artists and writers including Henri Matisse, Ezra Pound , Pablo Picasso, Max Jacob, and Guillaume Apollinaire . Stein was a passionate advocate for the "new" in art, and her literary friendships grew to include writers as diverse as

An Incomplete Portrait of Gertrude Stein Always one of my favorite poets, Gertrude Stein's rendition of A Completed Portrait of Picasso was the highlight (for me) of the CD collection 100 Years of Poetry . It sounded to me like Gertrude Stein was rapping out an infectious groove with her incessant "Now, not Now, and Now". It wasn't long before I tried to complete a portrait, this time of Stein, and this time using a rhythmic motif based in a scale consisting of seven equal divisions of the octave. Link here for the All Stein All the Time web page... is 3:05 long and about 2.8 Megs (in mp3 format). Download now. Looking for Bill's other music? Biography
    Gertrude Stein
    Artist USA Born
    Died
An American writer, eccentric, poet, self-styled genius and collector of art.
Stein lived in Paris from 1903 and her house at 27 Rue de Fleurus became established as an artistic and literary salon - American visitors to Paris would come here to be introduced to French painting.
Together with her brother, Leo Stein (1872-1947) Stein collected Braque, Picasso, Matisse. Her writings were claimed, by her, to be a counterpart to the contemporary movement, Cubism. Her writings are concerned with the rhythm and sound of words rather than their meaning.
They are remembered as prolific and important collectors but often criticised that they had little genuine feeling for the visual arts.
