Critical Annotated Bibliography
about William Stafford's Work
Books
  • Andrews, Tom, ed. On William Stafford: The Worth of Local Things . Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press, 1993.
This book contains reviews of fourteen of Stafford's collections, twelve general essays, eleven essays on selected poems or articles, and an extensive bibliography. In the introduction Andrews states that he wanted to include some essays that reflect on the debates about Stafford's work and essays that not only discuss the value of Stafford's work, but also question it (vii). This book would be good for the reader who wants a selection of critical responses on Stafford's work without having to search through literary journals.
  • Carpenter, David A. William Stafford . Boise: Boise State University Western Writers Series, no. 72, 1986.
Carpenter includes some biographical information as well as quotes from Stafford and others concerning his life and work. Mostly Carpenter discusses the presence of nature in Stafford's work, including how his time spent in the Midwest influenced his poetry, and also discusses some of the criticism available on Stafford at the time this piece was published. Overall a great piece to help readers understand and appreciate Stafford's poetry.
  • Holden, Jonathan.

Skip navigation links and go to page title Axe Home Questions? Search Engines ... Catalog Calendar of William Stafford-Denise Low Correspondence Return to the William Edgar Stafford Collection. Denise Low, a drawing by Ted Watts Denise Low, a widely published poet and instructor at the Haskell Indian Nations University, Lawrence, Kansas, states: "Once I talked with Stafford about the lasting influence of Kansas culture on his work, and he agreed that he filtered his writings through that sensibility, even years after he left the state. He had left Kansas reluctantly, in part because of his unpopular stand as a conscientious objector during World War II. The morality that he so often wrote about turned upon him in this case and hurried his move to Iowa and then to Oregon. Of course, he was not a bitter man and did not hold this difficult part of his life against his home state. "I instigated the anthology Kansas Poems of William Stafford in part because I wanted Kansas people to be aware of his writings, and it is appropriate that this correspondence remains in a Kansas library. I believe that most of his manuscripts will remain at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon . . . beyond the reach of many Kansas researchers and researchers."

The Mozart Myths: A Critical Reassessment
    Author: Stafford, William
Published: Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1991
ISBN: At 280 pages, this may be one of the slimmest studies of Mozart's life yet written. And Stafford's spare and intelligent prose is conducive to a quick read. But this little book packs a mighty punch: After you read it, you'll never look at another Mozart biography the same way again. Mozart's late career and his death are poorly documented, creating the sort of vacuum biographers abhor. Naturally, they have tried to fill it. As a result, all sorts of "myths" ranging from spurious gossip to wishful thinking have been offered up over the years as explanations for Mozart's character and "genius." Stafford separates these myths into several broad categories ("Beast and angel," "Genius and misfit," "Existentialist skepticism" and so forth). Then he examines each, meticulously sifting the facts from the chaff. Those facts are few, thanks to Stafford's insistence on original sources. He describes the documentary evidence of Mozart's medical history as an inverted pyramid: Because of widespread plagiarism and embellishment, a very wide body of secondary literature rests upon a very narrow body of evidence. For example, though much has been written about it, little is known for certain about Mozart's final illness. And though there are several possible diagnoses, Stafford concludes that poison is not one of them. Mozart was not murdered, least of all by court composer Antonio Salieri.

    Stafford, William Edgar
Born in Hutchinson, Kansas on January 17, 1914, William Edgar Stafford grew up with parents who listened to their children’s ideas. They also loved to read, and would "luxuriate in stories." In terms of literary influences, Stafford consistently claimed his mother to be most significant. His father’s generosity comes through in a story William told of being on a walk with him and seeing a hawk land in a cottonwood across a field. When they approached the tree, his father said, "Bill, maybe your eyes are better than mine. Maybe you will be the one to see the hawk." By such moves his father brought him right alongside him, even as a "partner."
In the way he describes his writing time in an interview with Nancy Bunge, he reveals something more of his shelter. "It’s a confirming, satisfying activity to do. And it’s almost devotional. Maybe that’s too strong, but it’s as if a day of my life deserves a little attention from life. It’s my kind of attention to stop long enough, to let the evaluative, the speculative, the exploratory impulses that are native to that portion of my time be manifest in a sustained way so that I can recognize them and get sustenance from them."
While in high school William went on what he described as an Indian vision quest, camping out in the breaks above the Cimarron River: "That encounter with the size and serenity of the earth and its neighbors in the sky has never left me. The earth was my home; I would never feel lost while it held me." Or as he said in his poem "One Home:" "Wherever we looked the land would hold us up." You can see where his steadiness comes from.
