Why Guns?
by L. Neil Smith Over the past 30 years, I've been paid to write almost two million words, every one of which, sooner or later, came back to the issue of guns and gun-ownership. Naturally, I've thought about the issue a lot, and it has always determined the way I vote. People accuse me of being a single-issue writer, a single-issue thinker, and a single-issue voter, but it isn't true. What I've chosen, in a world where there's never enough time and energy, is to focus on the one political issue which most clearly and unmistakably demonstrates what any politician or political philosophy is made of, right down to the creamy liquid center. Make no mistake: all politicians even those ostensibly on the side of guns and gun ownership hate the issue and anyone, like me, who insists on bringing it up. They hate it because because it's an X-ray machine. It's a Vulcan mind-meld. It's the ultimate test to which any politician or political philosophy can be put. If a politician isn't perfectly comfortable with the idea of his average constituent, any man, woman, or responsible child, walking into a hardware store and paying cash for any rifle, shotgun, handgun, machinegun, anything without producing ID or signing one scrap of paper, he isn't your

Guest Writer (Terra, Sol) Science fiction
L Neil Smith responds On Thursday, February 06, 2003, Paul Marks of Northamptonshire wrote on Samizdata some views on the history of modern science fiction that I found very interesting (especially since they mentioned me). The following is not so much to correct him, as to add to what he said.
Modern science fiction began as little more than another way to popularize left wing socialism. Both H.G. Wells and Edward Bellamy wrote socialist Utopias, and Wells wrote allegorical attacks on capitalism and individualism. Ironically, they (and Ayn Rand) inspired me to do what I do.
I generally exclude Rand as a science fiction writer only because she didn't know that Anthem and Atlas Shrugged are science fiction and that science fiction is the "literature of ideas" that she erroneously believed detective fiction to be. Anthem and Atlas Shrugged are science fiction, all right. But Rand at least consciously was not a science fiction writer. I realize I may be splitting hairs. For that matter, I've never been sure whether Kurt Vonnegut is a science fiction writer, more because of the way he's marketed than anything else. On the other hand, Frank Herbert was definitely a science fiction writer who, after many years of unspeakable struggle (after being rejected by every American house:

THE AMERICAN ZONE, by L. Neil Smith

That awful whining shriek you can hear for the whole time you're reading The American Zone is the sound of a very large axe being ground. L.Neil Smith is a prominent American Libertarian. Libertarians (US ones, that is) favour absolute personal freedom (what we here would probably refer to as anarchy). Smith believes (boy, does he believe) in the inherent evil of government - any government. William 'Win' Bear is a refugee from a world much like our own who, like many others, has found refuge in a parallel universe where the USA never happened and Libertarian values have triumphed instead. The Confederacy, as it is called, is a utopia: technologically advanced, prosperous and peaceful. But when a strange new phenomenon called 'terrorism' arrives in this world Win and his friends have to figure out who's behind it before something even worse called 'a government' takes over the Confederacy. To begin with I was intrigued by The American Zone : I find a lot of anarchist ideals really quite sensible (on paper, at least), and found myself nodding in agreement at Smith's views on things such as war, state-sponsored capitalism and individual freedom (post 9/11 his theories on government curtailment of liberties for 'security' following terrorist attacks are frighteningly spot-on).

Neil Smith To The Second Annual Freedom Summit October 12th and 13th, 2002, Phoenix, Arizona by L. Neil Smith Special to TLE Issue 195 INTRODUCTION: 30 YEARS OF FAILURE Ladies and gentlemen, fellow children of the American Revolution, I have a question for you: how many Americans does it take to change a dim bulb? It would appear that honest individuals, in what I've been known to call the "general freedom movement", differ with one another over the practicality, the efficacy, and even the morality of the existence and operation of a libertarian party. However you want to slice it, this is a sobering thought. At no time in modern history has the very concept of individual liberty been in greater danger of being snuffed out, brutally and abruptly, by those who have solemnly promised to protect it. And yet the vast majority of Libertarian Party candidates do not often speak of the kinds of liberty and the extent of freedom in which I'm interested, and for which I've struggled, almost my every waking hour, since I was a 15-year-old inmate at Choctawhatchee High School in Okaloosa County, Florida, reading his first Ayn Rand novel and perhaps his 20th book by Robert Heinlein. There are two reasons for this failure to speak for the essence of freedom, and they are dismal ones. The first is the fear, common among party libertarians, that a frank and fully frontal expression of our desire for freedom won't "play in Peoria", that straightforwardness and passion will cost the Libertarian Party votes. And winning votes, of course, is so much more important than actually being free. At least that's how it sounds sometimes to this 40-year veteran of the general freedom movement.

Bretta Martyn - Bretta, Henry Martyn's daughter, is ejected from a spaceship by her father's old nemesis, left for dead, adrift in space. But resourceful Bretta finds haven on a strange world of escaped slaves. Determined to seek justice and have her revenge, Bretta blazes a new chapter in the interstellar piracy of her father, the dread Henry Martyn. Pallas - Pallas is a colonized asteroid and home to the Greeley Project, a colony/prison under the direction of former U.S. Senator Gibson Altman. Young Emerson Ngu, escapee from the Greeley Project and husband to Altman's daughter, uses his talents to achieve dazzling success. True to his namesake, Emerson follows the way of individualism, making him the hero of Pallas, a libertarian paradise atop an asteroid, andthe enemy of Altman. Now it's a standoff that Pallas may not survive. The Probability Broach - Congress is in Colorado. Everybody carries guns. And there are gorillas in the Senate. Free enterprise is king. And there's no such thing a a free lunch. This is the novel that won L. Neil Smith the first of his two Prometheus Awards for Best Libertarian Fiction, and put him on the map as the foremost libertarian science fiction writer today.

When They Came for the Smokers ...

Security

"It should be perfectly apparent, even to someone with only half a brain to think, that Clinton and his wife are hell-bent on doing to the Bill of Rights what the Oklahoma City bomber did to the Murrah Building, or their Attorney General did to the Branch Davidians."
A Culture of Harmlessness

"How long have philosophers warned us that autocratic, stupid, and gratuitous legislation speed limits, gun control, alcohol and drug prohibition, confiscatory taxes, seizure decrees, environmental edicts, 'health and safety' measures nourish a people's contempt for law and order?" Newsgroups: alt.fan.heinlein
Date: 2001-05-04 19:24:02 PST Once again we are fortunate enough to have a guest author on our chat. This time it is L Neil Smith, a well known Libertarian author whose home page lists Heinlein as a major influence, as well as Ayn Rand.
http://www.webleyweb.com/lneil/index.html

Neil is the author of many books, ranging from his first, 'The Probability Broach' which features a detective who ends up in a parallel universe where the Whisky Rebellion ( discussed here on afh recently) was resolved somewhat differently, resulting in an anarchist USA, to some Star Wars tie ins. He is a long time member of the Libertarian Party and a lifetime member of the NRA. The homepage mentions that in his books Neil predicted the fall of the Soviet Union, digital watches and the Internet which is pretty good going.
Neil has some strong views on subjects familiar to a Heinlein reader and I expect the chat to be lively and informative. I hope to see some new faces as well as the always welcome familiar ones and remember that all instructions on how to participate are on Dave Wright's page

Former gunsmith, ballistician, reserve police officer, and likely the most widely-published and prolific libertarian writer in the world, L. Neil Smith produces fiction which is often compared to the works of Robert A. Heinlein and H. Beam Piper. Author of countless essays and articles, as well, he's been called "the most frequently crossposted writer on the internet". Neil has also performed as a professional musician, playing banjo and guitar. An enthusiastic competitor in the long-range sport of handgun metallic silhouette shooting, he lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Cathy, his daughter Rylla, and two striped orange cats named Amber and Ambrose.
Forge of the Elders
Just when the 21st century thought it was safe to throw Marxism on the ash heap of history once and for all, a worldwide economic collapse suddenly made freedom seem less desirable than security, and the Total State turned out to be the comeback kid. In the US, where the power elite had long shown heartfelt affection for collectivism and making the trains (nationalized, of course) run on time, communism had a second coming. Which meant that Earth was now the Red Planet. The few holdouts and counterrevolutionaries would be dealt with in good time. Of course, collectivization only made the worldwide depression worse. But then the People's Astronomers noticed an asteroid with unusual spectrographic properties, seemingly a treasure trove of valuable minerals that might rejuvenate the Earth's economy. So three aged NASA shuttles were pulled out of mothballs, crewed by a team of hand-picked misfits whom no one would miss, and sent to the asteroid.

Lincoln
by L. Neil Smith
Very interesting ... My article " The American Lenin " was originally published in a large western newspaper a few years ago, and stirred up a reaction very similar to the one we're seeing presently, following JPFO's rerelease of it. I stand by the article now as I did then. In fact I've since learned that I was unnecessarily gentle with Lincoln, who committed many more evil and illegal acts than I was aware of at the time I wrote the article. After the controversy following the original publication, a retired professor of history from that state's university wrote to the newspaper to say that I was correct in everything I said about Lincoln and the War between the States. Unfortunately, the editors of the paper apparently felt the flap had gone on long enough, and they didn't print the letter. The simple fact is that if Lincoln had done what he did in any other country, we would

Neil Smith, who brought you The Mitzvah (Free-Market.net's "Freedom Book of the Month" for July, 1999), now present their answer to that question in an exciting sequel they call Hope Hope is the story of Alexander Hope, a young American who comes back from Vietnam, falls in love with a bright, beautiful girl, and with her starts a pioneering computer business. Thirty years later he's a billionaire, and alone in life. He decides to leave everything he created behind to write books and teach history at a private college. Almost as a joke, Alex allows a handful of admiring students to enlist him as a candidate for a third party Presidential nomination. His brief campaign rests on a single promise: to enforce the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution commonly known as the Bill of Rights exactly like the highest law of the land they happen to be. And in a series of astonishing but perfectly plausible political events, he's amazed to discover that he's headed for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From his office in the White House, President Hope labors to bring a swollen, murderous, runaway government under control by binding it "with the chains of the Constitution" an objective that would end at least 90% of all government activities while the enemies of liberty at both ends of the political spectrum (and within his own party, as well) attempt to obstruct, discredit, impeach, and even kill him.

L. Neil Smith: He "already has a loyal Libertarian following from his novels." A group of LP members has launched an "ad hoc conspiracy" to draft libertarian science fiction author L. Neil Smith to run for president in 2004 either as a Libertarian or an an independent. Smith has pledged to make a presidential run if he either receives the LP nomination, or gets at least one million signatures supporting an independent campaign. Thomas Knapp, who is spearheading the effort, said Smith would make an ideal presidential candidate for the party. "We are determined to make [Smith] our candidate," he said. "Not only does he articulate a persuasive vision of a libertarian society, but he already has a loyal Libertarian following from his novels." Knapp, who serves as an alternate member of the LNC for Region 1 and is an editor at Free-Market.net, acknowledged that gathering one million signatures is a longshot.
