masacradas para satisfacer nuestros apetitos.

Pedimos los domingos tener luz,
Estamos enfermos de la guerra, no queremos luchar -
la idea de ello llena nuestros corazones de espanto

International Vegetarian Union History of Vegetarianism George Bernard Shaw
From the archives of The Vegetarian Society UK: The Summer of 1946 seems to have been a season of anniversaries and memorials. The Vegetarian Society itself was looking forward to its 100th anniversary and giving its members advance warnings of celebratory plans. But the big story of the July issue of The Vegetarian Messenger was the tribute to George Bernard Shaw, celebrating his 90th birthday on the 26th of that month. He had, at that time, been a vegetarian for 66 years and was commended as one of the great thinkers and dramatists of his era. "No writer since Shakespearean times has produced such a wealth of dramatic literature, so superb in expression, so deep in thought and with such dramatic possibilities as Shaw." The writer was a staunch vegetarian, anti-vivisectionist and opponent of cruel sports. Quote: This is the true joy in life; being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, and being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod.

    A Quote from George Bernard Shaw
    Some people see things as they are and say why. I see things that never were and say why not. This GBS quote has resulted in many e-mail messages! I too originally attributed it to Robert F Kennedy, since that's who I heard say it. Someone e-mailed me a while back saying it was GBS. He explained the following anecdote. RFK almost always ended his speeches with that quote, often attributing it "As George Bernard Shaw used to say: Some people see things as they are and say why. I see things that never were and say why not." He said, since most people knew the speech was over when RFK said "As George Bernard Shaw used to say," they would start packing up. One time RFK joked "And as George Bernard Shaw used to say... It's time to head for the busses." :) Thus, I changed my attribution. I haven't read GBS, though want to and eventually will. Hmm. A new email message says that I have the quote wrong. There's a slew of GBS quotes on this site and he has the quote as being: You see things and say 'Why?';

    ENGL428 Major Writers George Bernard Shaw Shaw was a very witty satirist who loved to present people with the absurdity of their conventional way of thinking. His satires range widely over such subjects as heroism in war, physicians and their power over life and death, religion, the battle of the sexes, education, and heaven and hell. The prefaces to many of his plays, besides being examples of a wonderful prose style, are often funnier than the plays themselves.
