This is the first of a projected four volumes, collecting all of the Schmitz stories set in the Federation of the Hub. Many of them have been out of print for years, and it's great to see them brought back. This first volume centers primarily on Telzey Amberdon (two short and relatively unknown stories are also included), a teen-age and very precocious telepath who seems to attract trouble. Although Telzey is a teen-ager, these stories are NOT juveniles. Telzey is one of my favorite characters, although she has very stiff competition from Trigger Argee who will appear in Volume 2 (to be on the shelves about the time this appears). This series is not to be missed.

James H. Schmitz was born in Germany in 1911 of American parents. When World War I broke out, they moved back to the United States. After it ended, they returned to Germany where his father worked for an American company. James went to school in Germany, then returned to Chicago in 1930 to go to business school and finally switched to a correspondence course in journalism. With no jobs because of the Depression, he returned to Germany to work with his father's company. With Hitler marching into Austria and Czechoslovakia, he and the family moved to St. Paul, then to Los Angeles. Advertisement document.write(''); Telzey Amberdon is classic light space-opera, starring a telepathic teenage supergirl. Good stuff! Telzey Amberdon, age 15, is a genius, a law student, and a psi supergirl who can save the Federation in a fortnight, and still make it home in time for her 16th birthday party. This is silly but engaging fluff, sort of a Nancy Drew in space but much better-written. It's a pleasure to see the Telzey stories back in print I'd forgotten the breezy assurance of Schmitz's voice. Besides six Telzey 'chapters', first published as short stories 1962-71, there are two related stories: the nasty, pulpy "Blood of Nalakia" (1953), and a nice, if routine, space-piracy thriller, "The Star Hyacinths" (1961). Plus, there's a great polychrome and foil cover (Telzey with a pride of crest cats) by Bob Eggleton.

The Books of James H. Schmitz
Stories in Chronological Order
If you know what a vatch is, you're at the right page! The stories of James H. Schmitz were largely published between 1949 and 1973, in Science Fiction pulps like Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy James H. Schmitz always stormed through an exciting tale, never stopping to see if his readers had caught up. His elaborate and consistant galactic politics, technology, and assortment of aliens and monsters, paved the way for future SciFi writers with well-planned future history. For his time, or anyone else's, though, he was known for his strong characterization of females, and even the elderly, in rock 'em sock 'em action yarns. The best BIG news is - Baen Books has published The Complete Federation of the Hub in five volumes. Find all of your favourite James H. Schmitz stories in these new anthologies. There's been some discussion of them on the Federation Comweb - see below - and also the Baen message board
Great Stuff!
The Schmitz Encyclopedia is the definitive site on James H. Schmitz! Guy Gordon has added artwork from original publications, both colour covers and black and white line drawings, essays on his work, letters, and photographs. His aim is to post everything in the world on JHS, and by golly! - I think he's got a shot at it!

Review of The Best of James H. Schmitz This is a selection of stories by an old SF hand who got his start back at the end of the "golden age" of science fiction (the period dominated by the likes of Heinlein and Clarke and Asimov and DeCamp), and continued to develop his craft into the '70s. Most of his novels are still in print, but many of his short stories, even those reprinted a number of times in other collections (as many were), are difficult to find. For this reason, as well as for the homage to his work which it represents, it is a pleasure to applaud the NEFSFA's initiation of their new "NESFA's Choice" series with this volume. The collection consists of nine stories, nearly all of which easily qualify as among Schmitz's best, together with a spritely and entertaining Introduction by Janet Kagan. There is also a Bibliography, as well as a brief "character key" chart for Schmitz's "Federation of the Hub" series compiled by the editor. In an uncommonly self-effacing move, the editor has provided no preface of his own, and partly because of this the basis for the selection of the stories is not clear to the reader, nor is the reason for the order of their presentation in the collection. The most reasonable principle of selection, one is led to suspect, is probably a desire to distribute the choices somewhat representatively over the span of Schmitz's career.
