Education
Although I write hard-SF, I confess up front to not being a working scientist or having a science degree. But, hey, I'm not alone in that. Fred Pohl never finished high school, and, sure, Kim Stanley Robinson is really Doctor Robinson, but his Ph.D. is in (gasp!) English Literature. more practical one, and so that's the one I decided to pursue. Even at the outset, I didn't have much faith in creative-writing courses, although Toronto's York University did offer a degree in that field. Instead, I decided to do a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Radio and Television Arts at what's now called Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto. I specialized in scriptwriting, but also took a lot of psychology electives (which is where the idea for my novel Foreigner

On Arthur C. Clarke
by Robert J. Sawyer
People keep saying Arthur C. Clarke should stop writing, now that he's "past his prime." No way! I hope he's still producing his solo works in 2001 and beyond. Clarke recently turned seventy-five. When one says to a 75-year-old that it's time for you to stop doing the work you love and instead you should do something else, that something else usually turns out to be dying. I loved Clarke's recent The Ghost From the Grand Banks . Now, it's no Childhood's End , but it is a good piece of Clarke and I thoroughly enjoyed it (and it's better than many of his lesser works from his golden youth, such as The Deep Range ). I also though I dislike the general ageism in this society. Clarke, or the cast of old Star Trek , or whomever one cares to name, should give up doing what they enjoy doing (and their livelihood) because they perhaps no longer do it the same way they did in their youth? Nonsense. Fortunately, there's a greater dynamic at play: the marketplace, which over and over and over again validates the work of these people, by continuing to buy it in huge numbers. May we all be so fortunate when we become senior citizens. Ghost From the Grand Banks is sort of distilled Clarke: it's his style concentrated, without apologies. He's always been known for sneaking in lectures on topics that fascinate him: all the stuff about the M-set in

On Alien Nation
by Robert J. Sawyer
Remember the TV series Alien Nation ? I was a big fan of it. I honestly thought it a better SF series than Star Trek: The Next Generation , and I found the Tenctonese aliens it portrayed endlessly fascinating. Of course, many reject the Tenctonese as being unbelievable because of that bit of business about them being burned by salt water. That does seem highly unlikely, given what we think we know of the fundamental principles of organic evolution. But those who reject the Tenctonese based on that are missing a key interpretation, I think. Remember the character of Uncle Moodri? It was established early on that he could walk into the ocean without the salt water burning him at all. And it was established in the Alien Nation movie that Tenctonese could undergo limited bodily metamorphoses. I believe the reaction to seawater was a conditioned psychological response, triggering destructive body changes, imprinted on the Tenctonese by the Overseers. That Moodri, who had freed himself of all the mental and physical shackles of slavery, was no longer affected by sea water, seems to support this.

The Neanderthal Parallax is your first trilogy since the Quintaglio trilogy, which wasn't conceived as a trilogy. How are did your approaches to the two series differ?
It's very much a question of scale. In the first volume of the Quintaglio trilogy, I covered an enormous amount of material, some of it in only cursory detail, because I didn't know that I was ever going to revisit that world. In the first volume of The Neanderthal Parallax , all of the action takes place over just a few days, and I concentrated on a few aspects of the culture, instead of trying to sketch it all. Specifically

Calculating God
Robert J. Sawyer
Tor 2000 A book review by Danny Yee When the aliens land they are not interested in Washington, Moscow, the Vatican, or NASA: the one that lands outside the Royal Ontario Museum wants to see a paleontologist. Much to the shock of senior vertebrate curator Tom Jericho, the aliens are creationists, believing that the universe shows clear signs of intelligent design... It turns out that mass extinctions on other worlds have coincided exactly with those on Earth, despite their causes being local. (This opening, in the sample chapter of Calculating God on the web, quickly had me hooked.) For his plot Sawyer has to exaggerate (or rather invent) evidence for intelligent design and external intervention in Earth's evolutionary history. But all the implausibilities involved resolve into a single big one at the centre of everything, which is much more satisfying (and easier to suspend disbelief for) than many small unconnected implausibilities: I was close to being annoyed by Sawyer's liberties several times, but he always came back. Sawyer also avoids a facile ending, showing a willingness to honestly face such emotionally difficult topics as relativistic differential aging and death from lung cancer. While it offers plenty of interesting ideas and some exposition of science

A Sci-Fi Paleontological Thriller!
(Book Review, Calculating God, by Robert J. Sawyer, 2000, Tor Books) Calculating God by Robert J. Sawyer is a fast-paced and well-written adventure by one of the best science fiction writers of all time. In this book, an alien from the star Beta Hydri III comes to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto wanting to speak to a paleontologist. The paleontologist she hooks up with is imaginary Dr. Thomas Jericho, a specialist on theropod dinosaurs. The alien, named Hollus, wants to talk about the history of Earth in relationship to her planet. They find out that Earth, Beta Hydri III, and a third planet in their galaxy (Delta Pavonis II), have all experienced five major mass extinctions. Each world's extinctions happened at the same time as the other two worlds. Hollus believed that this clearly shows that a God had created all three worlds and forced the tragedies upon them for some reason or another. Despite all the mathematical evidence from Hollus's extensive studies Tom still ignores the existence of a supreme creator. When Tom finds out that he has lung cancer, his remaining hopes and dreams all seem to be going away. He has only a matter of months to live and decides it's not the time to start believing in God. But, more hard evidence from Hollus brings him to consider the subject. When priceless Burgess Shale fossils are destroyed by a pair of religious fundamentalists and Tom, Hollus, and company are held hostage by these criminals, Tom's sliver of religious beliefs seem to fade even more.
