ROBERT J. SAWYER From an early age it appeared that Robert J. Sawyer was destined to become a science fiction writer. His scientific imagination was sparked by one of his earliest friends, a magical hook, that had dropped down from outer space and followed him wherever he went. Born April 29, 1960, Sawyer's vivid childhood imagination was coupled with an appreciation of books. His father, an economics professor, would read to him both works of fiction and non-fiction every night. As Sawyer explains "from quite early on, I was aware that books were where you got stories, but also where you could find information." In high school, Robert was president of the student council and editor of the school newspaper. However, he describes the single most important event of his life as the founding of a science fiction club, where he could share his interests in the genre with others. Robert's novels deal with various themes such as computers running amok, dinosaurs reliving the Age of Enlightenment, time-traveling paleontologists, and space-age detectives. Always highlighting the conflict between science and superstition, Sawyer has a preference for scientific knowledge and its ability to illuminate truth in the world. His recent novel are set in the present day, or the very near future, and deal with the impact of technological change on family life and society at large. His works of science fiction include: Golden Fleece Far-Seer Fossil Hunter Foreigner End of an Era (1994, Sejun Award Winner)

obert J. Sawyer bills himself as English-Canada's only native-born, full-time science fiction writer. It's a job he takes quite seriously by injecting a healthy dose of Canada into most of his work, something which "American editors and readers have embraced." Fittingly, Sawyer has been honored for his work in both countries, earning the Aurora Award Canada's national science fiction writing award a Nebula Award and a nomination on the Hugo ballot. Sawyer first began publishing science fiction with a short story sale to The Village Voice in 1981. Since then he has produced numerous short stories and nine novels, including seven novels currently in publication and two which have been completed but not yet published (Frameshift, due from Tor Books in May 1997, and Illegal Alien, due from Ace Books in 1998). His latest book, Starplex, just hit store shelves, and typical of Sawyer it combines both hard science fiction and mystery. Last week Sawyer sat down with Science Fiction Weekly to answer questions submitted by our readers about his views on science fiction, reading and the next millennium. Here is what he had to say:

He's also won an Arthur Ellis Award from the Crime Writers of Canada and as well as seven Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards ("Auroras"), and he's been nominated six times for the Hugo, SF's international readers' choice award. The age of miracle and wonder
As a science-fiction writer, I'm used to thinking in realistic terms about the future, extrapolating from what we know to what might be. But the new millennium is going to put me and my colleagues out of our jobs. Fifty years ago, Arthur C. Clarke, the author of the quintessential millennial work 2001: A Space Odyssey , coined "Clarke's Law," which says: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." When Clarke said that, by "sufficiently advanced technology," he had in mind the fruits of cultures thousands of years beyond our own. You want Claudia Schiffer? No problem. We can build her for you.
But scientific progress increases exponentially. Ninety per cent of all the advances made in the millennium we're now leaving happened in its final ten per cent the final century. Antibiotics and organ transplants, space travel and radio telescopes, computers and lasers, television and motion pictures, civil rights and feminism all of them are the product of the 20th century. Within the next two decades, we'll see as much additional progress as we did in all of the last century: the world of AD 2020 will be as incomprehensible to us as our world of today would have been to Queen Victoria during the last year of her reign.

End of an Era
Robert J. Sawyer is Canada's new star in the field of 'hard' science fiction and has written several good novels. Sawyer is interested in astronomy and paleontology(read dinosaurs). Sawyer first pursued a career as a paleontologist but changed his mind and became a full-time writer instead.
In End of an Era two men travel back to the age of the dinosaurs looking for answers regarding the mass-extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. They arrive at the end of the Cretaceous period and start their investigation. They have no trouble finding dinosaurs, only there is something very peculiar about the ones they encounter...
Sawyer has written an exciting story, interspersed with some interesting facts about the dinosaurs and their extinction. Mind you, this is HARD science fiction, but I still had a good time. Sawyer also shows his sense of humour in this book. A good thing he did. This is really good 'old-fashioned' science fiction.
    Sawyer has his own homepage
The Far-Seer trilogy
This series is also known as The Quintaglio Ascension trilogy . The three books are allegoric stories about important developments in science. The first book is Far-Seer . Robert Sawyer inhabits an alien world far from Earth with intelligent dinosaurs or 'Quintaglios' as they refer to themselves. Just like Man the Quintaglios create myths and religion to explain their existance. The main character in Far-Seer is the quintaglio known as Afsan, an apprentice to the Royal Astrologer. Afsan is brilliant and begins to question the old view of the world and to think in a scientific manner. The title Far-Seer refers to the newely invented telescope.
