John Ralston Saul on Corporatism:
lack of democracy and legitimization of corruption
Nipawin - Sunday, December 16, 2001 - by: Mario deSantis merger "Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." Benito Mussolini, Italian Duce hole in
the
ground
We have Canadian public health care defender Roy Romanow traveling around the country and abroad to come up with a new vision for health care in Canada. We need a another expert's health vision as much as we need another hole in the ground. The problem is not that we spend too much in health care, the problem is not even about the debate of public, or private health care, as the most important problem I have come to realize is the corporatism mentality of our leadership. misspent
millions
Yes, I have been trying to rationalize what was wrong in the Saskatchewan health care system and I found out that the most important problem was a leadership focused on drilling holes in the ground as long as there was unanimous consensus within the health leadership. Earlier in 1991, I implemented the first in house microcomputer health care payroll system in Gravelbourg, yet the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) misused millions of dollars in the Stargarden payroll system, then they misused other millions of dollars in the SAP-ping payroll system, and who knows what kind of health payroll system they have today. The Saskatchewan Government with the participation of SAHO have misspent dozens and dozens of millions of dollars in the Saskatchewan Health Information Network (SHIN), yet nobody is speaking out about the continuation of drilling holes in the ground.

The End of Rationalism:
An Interview with John Ralston Saul John Ralston Saul has been called "an erudite Toronto gadfly whose bete noire is the abuse of thought and language at the hands of arrogant elites." He is perhaps best known for his international bestseller Voltaire's Bastards , a wide-ranging and unwieldy jeremiad about the decline of Western civilization that appeared in 1992. The book is still at the center of a lively debate about the trouble with rationalism in contemporary Western culture. One critic aptly described it "a hand-grenade disguised as a book." When asked why he wrote it, Saul has said, "I thought I would write a book which would be the sort of book you're not supposed to write: an anti-expert book which will be hated by all the ideologues and all the beneficiaries of the system." While Saul is forceful and convincing as a cultural critic, I wondered after reading the book whether he is just a fussy intellectual or, as the Utne Reader suggested, one of today's great visionaries. I had a chance to find out in person in late 1996 following an academic conference in southern California. Our conversation began with the subject of his then newly released The Doubter's Companion

John Ralston Saul
September 28, 1994
John Ralston Saul, novelist, essayist and historian, was born in Ottawa and lives in Toronto. Educated in Canada, England and France, he specialized in history and politics. Saul's passion for travel and adventure has inspired his fiction. He has travelled with guerrillas in North Africa and Shan rebel warlords in Burma, and has journeyed through the jungles of Thailand and the Northwest Territories of Canada. Saul's fictional characters share similar adventures: writer Charles Stone unveils political conspiracy in France, oil executive Martin Laing joins the arms trade in the Middle East, museum curator James Spenser smuggles precious statues of Buddha out of Burma, and journalist John Field uncovers the secrets to his colleagues' murders in Bangkok. Far from being mere background, location is vital to his novels. The Paradise Eater , praised for its authentic depiction of Bangkok, received the Premio Letterario Citta di Modena award in 1990. In Saul's non-fiction, he "lays aside the mask of fiction to speak in his own voice".

Reading has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, starting with Enid Blyton stories as a youngster and progressing through to the teenage horror novels.
This was the eighth novel written by John Saul according to what I've discovered. Some of his earlier work includes "Suffer The Children" and "All Fall Down".

John Ralston Saul speaking on Citizenship vs the Reigning Linear Trap
Public Lecture 29 August 1999
The lecture was televised by the ABC and video copies are available by contacting the ABC on 02-9950 3173 The Hawke Centre Civic Program challenges students and the general public to consider ideas and solutions for Australia and the world, leading towards cohesive societies and strong democracies I was trying to think how to begin this and on the way over I was reading Collins' Such Is Life, a great Australian classic, and somehow that opening line just kept going through my mind again and again, "Unemployed at last," with a sort of joyous exclamation mark, and I thought, apart from being a brilliant beginning to a novel, that it was a phrase that couldn't be used quite that way any more. Not with exactly the same kind of joy, perhaps more with dark irony now. And curiously enough, I don't know if anybody's ever said this in Australia before, but really it's a book that reminds me of Waiting For Godot, Beckett. You know, the opening of Waiting For Godot is the two bums are out on stage and Estragon says, "Rien faire," nothing to be done. A great sort of sense of inevitability that hangs over them. Inevitability about the big directions that are beyond the horizon just off that sort of minimalist stage that it's always done with and you simply have to adjust to whatever that reality may be turn out to be. I mean, there are other options and Vladimir and Estragon discuss the other options almost right away. Vladimir says, "What do we do now?" and Estragon says, "Wait." "Yes, but while waiting, well what about hanging ourselves?" "Well, it would give us an erection."

His Excellency John Ralston Saul
Welcome to the French for the Future web site. Every year, I am so pleased to welcome both Francophone students and those in immersion and core French programs to participate in this exciting adventure in biculturalism and bilingualism. Every individual who has the privilege of learning a second language has the advantage of understanding a whole new perspective on everyday life. Both here in Canada and abroad, knowing French opens the door to a wide variety of personal, cultural and professional prospects - the opportunities are endless. Our rapidly expanding global marketplace is creating a need for intelligent leaders in every domain who are able to quickly grasp new concepts. Being bicultural is a crucial stepping-stone to international understanding - through communication, we bridge the gaps between nations and create vital links with people from this country and from other French-speaking countries throughout the world. I invite you to read more about French for the Future Le français pour l'avenir and consider taking part in our Canada-wide conference on April 8, 2003. Please come visit us often.

Discours de Son Excellence John Ralston Saul, C.C. - Extraits
n May 2nd, the CASLT was pleased to host a reception at the West Block of
Parliament Hill. The Spring Celebration of Language and Teaching was an
opportunity to gather interested educators, Association representatives, School Board administrators and trustees to reflect on the wonderful work that we do in second language teaching as well as to consider our direction for the future. We were honoured that His Excellency John Ralston Saul, C.C., our honourary patron, accepted to address the group. His presentation was insightful, thought-provoking, and truly encouraging. As one participant stated after the address: "Our minds were challenged, our hopes have risen. There is a 'Grand Homme' in our corner wanting to promote second languages in the 21 st century." Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and to speak with His Excellency after the address. Many participants lingered and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful buffet by Tulips and Maple Catering. (Some elbowing was reported close to the delectable curry shrimp dip platter!) A lovely musical interlude preceded the address by a quartet of students from Lisgar High School String Ensemble. The CASLT would like to thank Staff at Rideau Hall, the office of Senator Ron Duhamel, and Staff at the West Block for their support in ensuring a successful event.

Why devote so much effort to the past, when tonight, in this city, there are 4 to 5,000 homeless, 1,000 of them children, half of them families with children. Perhaps the answer lies in our reaction to these numbers: a little shudder of horror or surprise and then they roll off our back. The next time we hear them, well, we've already heard them. What else is new? And they remain, stubbornly, numbers, not people with lives. So I add, what is the past when set against the 30,000 who will experience homelessness over the next 12 months in Toronto, remembering that only 17 percent of them are chronically homeless. The vast majority, therefore, are caught on the precarious ledge of poverty for dozens of reasons, and from time to time are shoved off or slip off and then desperately crawl back up again. How many are on the ledge? Some 80,000 in this city. Do you feel those numbers, aggressing you, crashing up against your sense of well-being, and then rolling off, down to the floor? Tomorrow there will be more numbers from different sources on different subjects - An export number, up or down; A dollar number, up or down; inflation, unemployment, waiting times in emergency wards, a tax statistic, a student debt calculation. Each will cause a sensation, positive, negative, a small catharsis, of the headline or police drama sort. These numbers have become our modern form of gossip; they are the People Magazine of public policy. Somehow, the lives which lie behind the drama cannot be integrated into our consciousness in a long-term way. Instead there is a sense of immobility. 'That's the way things are'. 'There isn't the money'. It is as if, seen from within the complexity of our systems, it is impossible to identify the relationship between responsibility and action.
