ARTISTIC INSTALLATIONS OF THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SAPPHO OF MYTILENE (LESBOS) What is the Sappho Project? The Sappho Project is a nonprofit organization consisting of highly qualified artists and administrators. To date, we have designed and produced two exhibits which reveal the life and extraordinary creative work of the great genius Sappho. Each exhibit honors her artistic achievements by graphically depicting her works and everyday life. These are based as far as possible on facts from the historical record. Both exhibits, a small and a larger one, tour galleries around the country as "artists' impressions" of the life of Sappho, from 7th century B.C. Lesbos up to contemporary times. They are available for renting and we can help you bring Sappho to your home town! See info below. A Big, New Installation in the Works! We have designed our biggest exhibit yet and are currently seeking funding for its construction. This traveling installation will contain a large-scale multimedia exhibit containing many exciting features such as: a painted Temple to the Goddess Aphrodite, a facsimile of an archeological 'dig' in a striking rotunda, sculptures, a garden of plants native to Lesbos, interactive computer terminals programmed with Sapphic material, a children's 'treasure hunt', and a performance area for poetry, music and dance, to name some of its features.

THE BANTOCK SOCIETY was founded in 1946 under the presidency of Jean Sibelius. A Trust Fund was initially established to promote interest in the life and work of Bantock and amongst the original signatories were Bax, Boult, Boughton, Brian, Dyson, Goosens and Vaughan Williams. Beecham's famous recording of Fifine at the Fair was partly funded by the Society. Since then, the Society has endured, if somewhat intermittently, in the service of Bantock's music. October 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of GB's death and with the recent flourish of excellent recordings and the current revival of interest in the composer's music the Society continues with renewed vigour. The Society now publishes The Bantock Society Journal twice a year in the winter and summer, with two supplementary newsletters in the spring and autumn. The Journal contains articles on Bantock's life and music as well as Society news, details of concerts, letters, books and CD reviews, and acts as a forum of discussion to which members are invited to contribute. When the record reviewers get round to this disc they will be reaching for the superlatives and it would not surprise me if it were to end up as Gramophone's Record of the Year. Sappho is a sensual and voluptuous orchestral song cycle for mezzo voice that has been virtually hidden for 90 years. Bantock creates a warm-textured thickly upholstered sound that has been caught to perfection by the engineer (Tony Faulkner) with a perfect balance between a large orchestra and the soloist, the mezzo, Susan Bickley. Following an orchestral prelude, there are nine songs and the work lasts fully an hour. Surviving fragments were collated and translated by Henry Wharton in 1885 and it was from this that Helen Bantock worked. One poem
