(India) The Grandmother's Tales and Other Stories From The New Yorker: Narayan... cannot be too highly commended to those who want to understand the Indian mind or to know what life in India is like. From The New York Review of Books : R. K. Narayan is a writer of towering achievement who has cultivated and preserved the lightest of touches. So small, so domestic, so quiet his stories seem; but great art can be very sly. From The New York Times: It is not too much to compare Mr. Narayan to Chekhov. From Newsweek: Narayan sees the divine in the ordinary. Narayan, R.K . (India) The Guide : A Novel (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) Rushdie, Salman Haroun and the Sea of Stories Rushdie is not technically an Indian writer; he lives and writes in the U.K. But he writes a lot about India which he does consider his "home." This particular book is a children's story. He says he wrote it for his ten-year old son. It was the first book he wrote after he went into hiding following Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa agianst him. It is an "eastern" fable, drawing on various epics/folktales from India, Persia, etc. But it really is a serious (though very funny) comment on the importance of the freedom of speech.

    The Man-Eater Of Malgudi - R. K. Narayan
    Shruthi G. Krishnan
We are, undoubtedly, a generation that has heard only of Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel and Harold Robins. I wouldn't be surprised if someone asked, "Who's R.K.Narayan?" R.K. Narayan, one of the most celebrated Indian writers in English is best remembered for his all-time best seller, 'The Guide' which has been filmed. Mr. Nataraj, the printer is the main protagonist in 'The Man-Eater of Malgudi' . His close set of friends include the poet and Mr. Sen, who becomes vociferous, while discussing affairs of the Nehru Government. Malgudi is a tiny village, weaved in Narayan's imagination, where the people are simple and their lives are so uncomplicated. Things take a drastic turn when Vasu, a human giant comes to Malgudi and starts occupying Nataraj's old attic. Vasu, a taxidermist frightens the villagers of Malgudi with dozens of carcasses showing up at his staircase everyday. Be it an eagle, a hyena or a tiger cub, the animal looks real and live with Vasu's expertise and skill. Nataraj becomes upset when he hears of Vasu's plans to eliminate the Temple elephant, just when everything is ready for a grand temple procession. He is ready to do anything, even risk his own life to protect the elephant from Vasu's rifle. The anxious reader is much relaxed when the climax of this hilarious novel is far from expected. But then, who is behind Vasu's death? Is it Nataraj, the house owner who is frustrated with his staircase being a storeroom of animal bodies? Is it Rangoli, the Temple dancer who brings

R.K. Narayan is considered to be India’s pre-eminent English-language writer. Like Faulkner and Garcia Marquez, Narayan invents a complete fictional world, Malgudi, and sets nearly all of his stories and novels there. The universal significance of his regionalist fiction has been analyzed and lauded. Critics observe that Narayan is neither a modernist or postmodernist writer, but rather a traditional storyteller. His fiction often relates the unexpected disruptions and subsequent crises in the lives of likeable protagonists. His tales are funny, suffused with comedy and irony, but they also take up important social and political issues, such as population control, Gandhism, and the conflicts between traditional and cosmopolitan India. There have been many postcolonial studies of Narayan’s work.

Jul 2001 Yuganta: The End of an Era
(Rasipuram Krishnaswamier Narayan, 1906-2001) He delighted three generations of readers with his stories of small town people and their ordinary lives. The inhabitants of R K Narayan's Malgudi were mostly mild and unheroic people students with no great ambitions, easy going householders content with their modest lives and idlers who spent their time talking in and around Market Street. The author's amused tolerance turned even the crooks into comic rather than evil figures. Once in a while there were unexpected turns of events but by and large the complications got sorted out by the end of each book and the normal rhythm of life was restored. This reassuring sense of stability and permanence might have been one of the reasons for his steady popularity. But the R K Narayan magic is not so easy to explain. There was nothing extra-ordinary either about his themes or narrative mode. While his two major contemporaries and numerous successors constantly experimented with language to meet the challenge of writing about India in English, Narayan solved the problem by appearing to ignore it. Through his even-toned minimalist prose he could manage to convey almost anything he wanted. It was like playing on an ektara, which may not capture too many intricacies, but can move the heart of the listener. Anyone attempting to play the ektara knows that it is not as easy as it sounds.

'Poll for India's Novelist of the Century'

The eminent Indian English novelist, Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Narayan was born in 1906. He had his early schooling in Madras, but moved to Mysore when his father was appointed Head Master of the Maharaja's high school there, and got his bachelors' degree from the University of Mysore. Most of his work, starting from his first novel Swami and friends (1935) is set in the fictional town of Malgudi which at the same time captures everything Indian while having a unique identity of its own. One of the few Indian-English writers spending nearly all his time in India, he went abroad to the USA in 1956 at the invitation of the Rockfeller Foundation. He began his literary career with short stories which appeared in The Hindu, and also worked for some time as the Mysore correspondent of Justice, a Madras-based newspaper. His autobiography tells us about the difficulties he faced in finding publishers for his earlier novels.

WHEN I was in college in the early 1940s, I used to spend my leisure hours in the reading room of the College Union, enthusiastically lapping up Indian and foreign newspapers and periodicals. I had already started contributing to The Illustrated Weekly of India. My father, a government doctor, often advised me to read The Hindu regularly. Like many others of his time he believed that it was the best way to improve one's English. But its editorials put me off. The part of the paper that interested me most was the Sunday column by R.K. Narayan. He would write an essay or story which made delightful reading. An obliging librarian let me cut Narayan's writings from old papers. I pasted them in my scrapbook and read them again and again. I was attracted to his writing because of the ease and simplicity of his style.
