Genre Short Story Keywords Alternative Medicine Asian Experience Homicide Narrative as Method ... Suffering Summary An astrologer and palm-reader is about to close up shop for the day. He tries to induce one last client to buy his services. The man initially resists, but then gives in. The astrologer then reads in the man's past that he had once been stabbed and left for dead in his village. The man had all this time been searching for his assailant. The astrologer reveals that the assailant had "died four months ago in a far-off town." The client is relieved and goes home. When the astrologer returns to his home, he tells his wife that once he had tried to kill a man. Commentary In this short story Narayan deals with the healing of memories. 46. The Wall -- Viet Nam Memorial
Commentary on the emotional effects people experience at the Vietnam memorial, and the possible reasons for them.
http://www.dbs2000ad.com/narayan/the-wall-viet-nam-memorial.htm
The Wall Viet Nam Memorial
Ever wonder why the Viet Nam Memorial evokes such strong feelings from people? After all, it's just another war memorial, and not particularly esthetically pleasing or heroic in its presentation at that. Yet people are deeply moved when they are in its presence, and it has become a symbol of the transformation of all of humankind. The reason is actually quite simple and extremely profound. For it is the Memorial for the War That Ended War. That war was the most grotesque, pointless, hideously horrendous, endless and dreadfully catastrophic war in its impact of all time. All who were involved whether by being there or by totally re-channeling their life by not being there were irrevocably transformed for life. And it all ended so ignominiously on that rooftop with the escape helicopter and the dumping of war equipment overboard at sea. And for what? The war started shortly after World War II ended and it took some 25 years and untold human, ecological and economic disaster to find out that the whole thing was a ridiculous undertaking in the first place. It was an attempt to impose a patriarchal and Western way of life on a most unwilling Eastern culture, with cold war paranoia thrown in to really heat it up. Furthermore, it was happening in a "baby soul" area of the world read that as primitive psychology, unrestrained fear, and the willingness to use the most extreme of tactics without hesitation. On top of which, it was a terrain and culture most unsuited to western style warfare. But we persisted all the way to the bitter end with totally predictable results.

The law of life can't be avoided. The law comes into operation the moment we detach ourselves from our mother's womb. All struggle and misery in life is due to our attempt to arrest this law or get away from it or in allowing ourselves to be hurt by it. A profound unmitigated loneliness is the only truth of life.
R K Narayan 1906-2001 For R. K. Narayan, death is not a full stop. As he states in The English Teacher , it is more of a comma, with each hiatus leading to the birth of a new identity which replaces the previous one. But the western concept of identity as a mask is against Narayan's oriental philosophy. His protagonists do not merely play one role after the other, they live out one existence, which is not a performance but pure reality. As a Spectator review once put it, his success lies in portraying the 'extra-ordinary ordinariness' of day-to-day life.

Narayan, R(asipuram) K(rishnaswamy) , highly acclaimed Indian author, born in Madras (now Chennai). His first novel, Swami and Friends (1935), was based on his experiences as a village schoolteacher. Like his later fiction The English Teacher (1945) and The Vendor of Sweets (1967), it is a gently humorous, elegantly crafted picture of daily life in a fictitious southern Indian town. Narayan's other novels include Waiting for the Mahatma (1955), The Guide (1958), The Man-Eater of Malgudi (1961), and A Tiger for Malgudi (1983).
A Horse and Two Goats (1970), Malgudi Days (1982), and Grandmother's Tale (1994) are collections of Narayan's short stories and contain simple, yet insightful, character portrayals that often reveal subtle ironies. He also revived the classic Indian epics The Ramayana (1972) and The Mahabharata (1978), condensing the lengthy works and setting them in modern surroundings.

The traditions of kathak, the classical dance from northern India, can be traced back more than 1,000 years. It is the only Indian dance form that combines influences of both Hindu and Islamic cultures. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was lavishly cultivated in the royal courts of northern India under the patronage of the Nawabs and Maharajas. This beautifully filmed and edited documentary illustrates aspects of the kathak repertoire as demonstrated by some of it s greatest living performers. A substantial part of this repertoire is concerned with storytelling and mime. The subject matter of these dances ranges from simple themes pertaining to village life to sublime depictions of the experiences of Hindu deities. The repertoire also includes elements of "pure" dance, concerned primarily with rhythmic discipline. The film, like so much of India's religious and cultural thinking, focuses on themes of circles and cycles and shows how they appear again and again in the dance and its music. A variety of stunning miniature paintings show kathak dancers in the old court settings and provide historical and aesthetic perspective.

54. R.K. Narayan"s Novels: The Guide
Themes of personal transformation are explored in narayan's novel.
http://www.angelfire.com/md2/timewarp/theguide.html
R.K. Narayan’s The Guide The setting of R.K. Narayan’s novel, The Guide , as in most of his novels, is Malgudi, a fictional town in southern India. The novel is told through a series of flashbacks. Raju, the central character, grows up near a railway station, and becomes a shopkeeper, and then a resourceful tourist guide. He meets Rosie, a beautiful dancer, and her husband, whom Raju nicknames Marco, because the man dresses in a thick jacket and helmet as if undertaking an expedition, like Marco Polo. Marco is a scholar and anthropologist, who is more interested in his research than in his young wife Rosie. Rosie and Marco engage Raju’s services as a tourist guide, and he takes them sightseeing. She wants to see a king cobra dancing; Marco wants to study cave paintings. Rosie and Marco quarrel constantly, and Marco remains cold and aloof toward Rosie. While Marco is away studying cave paintings, Raju falls in love with Rosie. When Marco discovers that Raju and Rosie have become lovers, Marco abandons her and returns to Madras. Raju becomes infatuated with Rosie. He is so obsessed with Rosie that he forgets his business, falls into debt, and loses his shop at the railway station. He also loses his mother’s respect because he is living with a married woman. Raju’s mother moves out of their house, and the house is claimed to pay off his debts.

THIS SITE IS FOR NARAYANA GURU ABOUT GURUDEVAN GURU'S TEACHINGS RELATION WITH SNDPY NEW CONCEPT OF GURUDEVA DERSHNAS ABOUT GURUDEVAN Born as an ordinary child to near Trivandrum, Kerala, India. He lead a simple life. In his childhood he searched for God. During his teenage he left his house and went to Aruvipuram Hills. He met Chattampi Swamikal there. They together lead a saint life and one day he got "Darshana" and he came out from the forest. During this time the cast problems are in its utmost in India and in Kerala. Brahmins treated the others as bad as a dog. One Sivarathri day (day for Ancestors), he took a stone from the Aruvipuram river after a long prayer and placed on a stand near to the river and declared this was an idol of Siva, the ancient God in Hindu mythology. This was a revolutionary act because during those days only Brahmins are allowed to install the iodls of God. Again Guru delivered a revolutionary speech, "This temple is for all the human beings, irrespective of his Cast or Religion". During those days only Brahmins are allowed inside the temples. Slowly he became a central figure in Kerala. His popularity spread because of his famous words "One Cast, One Religion, One God". Even Gandhi and Tagore came to see Guru and talk with him. He spent his last time in Sivagiri, near Trivandrum, Kerala. He started an institution for Saints to spread the message of harmony among human beings. He started an organisation known as Sree Narayana Darma Paripalana Yogam (SNDPY)
