Les Moeurs Kulturgeschichte for the first time . It is the recognition of history as a record of human experience which has inevitably resulted in the inclusion of this conquest of civilization within the framework of a complete human history. This appearance of civilization for the first time It is therefore of fundamental importance to determine where this marvellous process took place, and I believe that the materials for settling this question are already in our hands. Today the traveller on the Nile enters a wonderland at whose gates rise the colossal pyramids of which he has had visions perhaps from earliest childhood. As he ascends the river he sees expanding behind palm-fringed shores vast temple precincts, to which avenues of sphinxes lead up from the shore, dominated by the mighty shafts of tall obelisks and stately colonnades. But it does not commonly occur to the traveller that, just as in America, so there on the Nile the wilderness preceded all this Here it was then that the prehistoric hunter, whose instinct for self-expression had been for ages quite content to ply the flint graving tool in carving symmetrical lines of game beasts along the ivory handle of a stone dagger, was transformed by fifty generations of social evolution into a royal architect, launching great bodies of organized craftsmen upon the quarries of the Nile cliffs, and summoning thence stately and rhythmic colonnades, imposing temples, and a vast rampart of pyramids, the greatest tombs ever erected by the hand of man, and the first great superstructures of masonry in any country.

The Stamford Historical Society James Henry Hoyt James Henry Hoyt The excerpt below is from pages 398 ff. The book may be found at our Research Library Ferguson Library "HOYT, JAMES HENRY, fourth son of Billy and Sarah (Wood) Hoyt, was born in Stamford April 14, 1809. See sketches of Abraham and Thaddeus Hoyt. His father was a farmer, and his early educational advantages were those of the sons of our ordinary New England farmers. At the age of seventeen he was apprenticed to the cabinet making-business, and at the close of his minority he took the business of his former master into his hands. He soon connected with this business the lumber trade. It will illustrate his enterprise thus early in his business life, that while engaged in this trade he imported the first cargo of hard coal ever brought to Stamford. In his private life Mr. Hoyt is eminently a domestic man. His home, when not in his business, is emphatically in the bosom of his family. He married January 31, 1838, Sarah J. Grey, of Darien, and they have five children, three of whom are now living. It was a very severe stroke which bereaved him of his wife. He had entrusted to her the entire administration of his domestic matters, because his official duties required all his strength. He only asked, what in the stress of his care and responsibility he so much needed, a quiet and restful home, in which he could find the repose that should refit him for his work. And it was just such a home that he found, under her administration, always ready to welcome him.

Mesmerizing on the podium and dauntless in the defense of his beliefs, James H. Lane was a principal leader of the anti-slavery forces that ultimately made Kansas free-soil. Lane was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, in 1814, and followed the footsteps of his father, an Indiana Congressman, by becoming a lawyer and a Jacksonian Democrat. Lane's service as the commander of two Indiana volunteer regiments in the Mexican-American War helped him to launch his own political career. He served as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor from 1849 to 1853 and then as a Congressman from 1853 to 1855. Instead of running for a second term, however, Lane moved to the Kansas Territory, where he saw the nation's future in the balance. When Congress created the Kansas Territory in , it broke with precedent and decided to let the territory's citizens determine for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The hope was for a democratic resolution of this divisive question. The result was that Kansas quickly became a staging ground for the impending Civil War, as pro-slavery and abolitionist forces from across the nation converged there to battle for their beliefs. Although he arrived as a Democrat, Lane stood at the forefront of the free-soil faction in Kansas, and was a founder of the Free-State party. He put his military training to use by organizing free-state militia units throughout the territory and in defending

Professor James Henry Breasted Writes in the Memory of his Fellow Scholar Professor James Henry Breasted conducted research on ancient Egypt, an area of study that Stevenson held very close to her heart. Stevenson’s passion for Egyptology began at an early age in Paris when she was under the supervision of M. and Mme. Achille Jubinal. M. Jubinal had his own museum and cultivated Stevenson’s interest in Egyptology during her years of study (Danien Not Yet Published: 1). At the beginning of the 20 th century, Breasted went to Egypt to study monuments and ancient remains. It was through their mutual passion for Egyptology that they formed a close intellectual bond. Upon Sara Yorke Stevenson ’s death, Breasted wrote a letter to Dr. Pepper who held a meeting in memory of Stevenson in the Auditorium of the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology . Breasted wrote, Not only did Professor Breasted regard Stevenson as an intelligent anthropologist, he considered her to be a strong woman who made immense sacrifices for the field in which she felt intense devotion. He praised her in the

    Governor James Henry Craig.
Sir James Henry Craig was appointed the seventh Governor of Canada on August 29, 1807, and held the position until October 23, 1811. Craig arrived in Quebec in very difficult times. His arrival fostered hope among the English-speaking people of the colonists that a fully British political system would finally be established. Expectations were also high among the French Canadians who hoped the new governor would right the wrong that had been imposed upon them. As early as 1808, problems arose in the House of Assembly. The House sought to discredit the legislative mandate of the magistrates by abolishing the right of judges to sit as members of the House. The debate grew bitter, and the newspapers, The Quebec Mercury and Le Canadien , took up sides. The French-Canadian electorate seethed with discontent. After being in session for only 36 days, the House of Assembly was dissolved by Craig. At the opening of the 1810 session, England ordered Governor Craig to accept the will of the House of Assembly to exclude the magistrates. The House passed a law to that effect, but the Legislative Council amended it to be applicable only for the next general election. The House of Assembly stood its ground and expelled a member who was a judge. Governor Craig prorogued Parliament and called an election, the third in 18 months. Also, in a bid to intimidate the public and its defenders, he had the presses of

[Excerpts] As I am disposed to see this question settled as soon as possible, and am perfectly willing to have a final and conclusive settlement now, after what the Senator from New York [William Seward] has said, I think it not improper that I should attempt to bring the North and South face to face, and see what resources each of us might have in the contingency of separate organizations. If we never acquire another foot of territory for the South, look at her. Eight hundred and fifty thousand square miles. As large as Great Britain, France, Austria, Prussia and Spain. Is not that territory enough to make an empire that shall rule the world? With the finest soil, the most delightful climate, whose staple productions none of those great countries can grow, we have three thousand miles of continental sea-shore line so indented with bays and crowded with islands, that, when their shore lines are added, we have twelve thousand miles. Through the heart of our country runs the great Mississippi, the father of waters, into whose bosom are poured thirty-six thousand miles of tributary rivers; and beyond we have the desert prairie wastes to protect us in our rear. Can you hem in such a territory as that? You talk of putting up a wall of fire around eight hundred and fifty thousand square miles so situated! How absurd.
