Herbert George Mead:
THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE ACT (Univ of Chicago Press, 1938)

Piero Scaruffi
Legal restrictions - Termini d'uso Not all great scientists are also great writers, and the American biologist George Herbert Mead certainly wasn't a great writer. His classic is difficult read for anybody, and still open to interpretation. Mead's ideas on consciousness were and still are revolutionary, in particular because they locate consciousness outside in the world, outside the organism.
Consciousness is not a separate substance, but the world in its relationship with the organism. Objects of the environment are colored, beautiful, etc: that "is" consciousness.
Objects do not exist per se, they are just the way an organism perceives the environment. And, presumably, different organisms may perceive different objects. Each organism perceives a different environment. It is our acting in the environment that determines how we perceive the environment. We are actors as well as observers. The response of the environment is what we perceive as objects.
In other words: the nature of the environment lies in its relationship to the organism; the environment results from the actions of the organism, in response to the stimulation of its sense organs, i.e. the organism determines the environment; and this results in the appearance of objects.

Herbert George Wells wurde am 21. September 1866 in Bromley (Kent) geboren.

Herbert George:
"Shadow Portraits/
Still Life Sculptures"
June 2 - July 8, 2000
Tues-Fri: 9:30 AM-5:30 PM
Sat: 11 AM-5:30 PM.
Fassbender Gallery 835 West Washington Blvd. Chicago, Illinois 60607 Telephone: 312/ 666-4302 http://www.fassbendergallery.com There is motion; but nothing moves. And change; yet the objects stand still in time. There is form, and mass; and the suggestion of form, a visibly defined absence of mass. Here, shadow and object meld. Above all, there is a deep, moving inspiration, expressed in faultless technique. Herbert George's current exhibition of sculpture and sculptural assemblage, "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures," is scheduled to run from June 2 through July 8, 2000 at Fassbender Gallery, 835 West Washington in Chicago's West Loop Gate Gallery District. "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" rewards each repeated visit. The work in "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" plays with the shifting perspective between a walking viewer and the sculptural object, and does this beyond the shaped masses, angles and coherent flow of the object's own physical form. As one circles a piece, one feels a cinematographic effect of sequence the dynamic of light and perspective a logic of perception which cyclically ends wherever a viewer first started, and in this process each sculpture permutes its identity and effects.

Real Father of Science Fiction
In four years Wells published, 1) The Time Machine The Island of Doctor Moreau The Invisible Man (1897); and, 4) The War of the Worlds (1898). Moreover, in the following fascinating story The Door in the Wall (1906) he first contemplated parallel worlds...

Wells, Herbert George (1866-1946)
English writer whose science fiction stories played an important role in influencing popular conceptions of the nature of extraterrestrial life. The first novelist of his genre to receive a thorough scientific education, he held a bachelor's degree from the Normal School of Science (later renamed the Royal College of Science) in London, and had been tutored by none other than the biologist Thomas Huxley , famed for his epic public encounter with the creationist Bishop Samuel ("Soapy Sam") Wilberforce at Oxford in 1860. Huxley had been a close friend of Charles Darwin . Now, following Charles's death in 1882-the year that Wells first began attending Huxley's lectures-he was the new chief standard-bearer for Darwinism. Wells, therefore, could not have found a better teacher from whom to learn about the theory of evolution and all that it implied.
For Wells, as for his contemporaries, evolutionary theory was at the hub of biological thinking. It dominated much of what he wrote, both in the form of fiction and science journalism. In essay after essay, especially in his first decade of professional writing from 1887 to 1896, he attacked the traditional anthropocentric viewpoint that man was somehow special and that nature was teleologically oriented toward our species. What was Homo sapiens but just another, accidental episode in the panoramic sweep of history? That was Wells's fundamental premise, and from it he went on to contemplate the precariousness of man's tenure on Earth. In an early piece, "Zoological Regression," he writes:
