B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback E(dward) M(organ) Forster (1879-1970) English author and critic, member of Bloomsbury group and friend of Virginia Woolf. After gaining fame as a novelist, Forster spent his 46 remaining years publishing mainly short stories and non-fiction. Of his five important novels four appeared before World War I. Forster's major concern was that individuals should 'connect the prose with the passion' within themselves, and that one of the most exacting aspect of the novel is prophecy. "If human nature does alter it will be because individuals manage to look at themselves in a new way. Here and there people - a very few people, but a few novelists are among them - are trying to do this. Every institution and vested interest in against such a search: organized religion, the State, the family in its economic aspect, have nothing to gain, and it is only when outward prohibitions weaken that it can proceed: history conditions it to that extent." Leaving Home: E.M.Forster and the Pursuit of Higher Values By Dharmachari Abhaya
In the Buddha's day, leaving home was an accepted feature of the contemporary socio-religious ethos. It was not uncommon for people - mostly men, but occasionally women - to be so inspired by the Dharma that soon after their first encounter with the Buddha or one of his disciples, they would decide to drop everything and leave it all behind in pursuit of the Truth. Determined to make a clean break of it, they severed, at a single stroke, all bonds of family, caste and clan. In quoting the phrase 'dharmas never hold them', Sangharakshita is referring to the fourth line of the sixth verse of the Ratnagu.na-sa.mcayagaathaa (in Edward Conze's translation). [2] The whole line reads: 'Home' is the place we live, either literally or in our minds. It is our familiar environment, a place where we know our way around, and above all, where we feel secure. It is not only that on which we depend for our sense of security, but also that from which we derive our sense of identity. Without it, we feel insecure and afraid. Therefore we cling to it. We need it. We are enslaved by it. If it is destroyed or taken away from us, we are devastated, and feel lost. Sutta Nipaata – 'Cramped is this life at home, dusty its sphere' – is no longer frightening but inspiring, and the life of the Holy Man, the true Dharma-farer, wandering fancy-free, like gossamer on the breeze, becomes enviable. In this sense, home is experienced not as a nest, a comforting cocoon which one has to tear oneself away from, but rather as a prison, a stifling confinement from which one longs to break free.

Margaret Forster was born in Carlisle in 1938, and educated at the Carlisle and County High School for Girls. From here she won an Open Scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford where in 1960 she was awarded an honours degree in History. The day after she finished her final exams, she married Hunter Davies, whom she met and fell in love with at the age of 17. Since 1963 Margaret Forster has worked as a novelist, biographer and freelance literary critic, contributing regularly to book programmes on television, to Radio 4 and various newpapers and magazines. Her recent best selling works include the biography of Daphne du Maurier , a memoir of her own family, 'Hidden Lives' , and the novel 'The Memory Box' 'Hidden Lives' is Margaret Forster's biography of her grandmother, her mother and herself. The story starts in working class origins in Carlisle, and mirrors the fortunes of three generations of British womanhood. 'Precious Lives' is about the death of her father and her sister-in-law, both from Carlisle. 'Rich Desserts and Captain's Thin' tells the story of the Carr family, a Quaker family who set up a biscuit making business in Carlisle which became one of the largest baking businesses in Britain.

A lot of e-mails I receive ask what references I can recommend, and where to find them. It may be obvious, but the best way to go about this is to visit a good library, and at a computer terminal search for the subject "E M Forster." Even a title search of "E M Forster" will turn up a lot, since almost all criticism collections or biographies are called "E. M. Forster" or at least include his name in the title. In any case, I guarantee that this is the cheapest way to find valuable material. I found a motherlode of Forster material in my main college library. Some libraries, of course, won't have as much as you'd like, but these days Forster-related books have experience a resurgence (probably thanks to the spurt of film adaptations within the 1980s and early 1990s), so you may luck out after all. The following is by no means a comprehensive list of biographies and criticism collections being a Forsterite, I also happen to be a collector of any Forster-related books (particularly of

Dritter Teil Die Erinnerung an Clive mochte verblassen.

    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Born in London on January 1, 1879 and educated at King's College, Cambridge, Forster won many awards and was given the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969. Foster died in Coventry, England on June 7, 1970. He inherited a serious and moral character from his paternal ancestors, the Thorntons. His maternal ancestors, the Wichelos, gave him an enjoyment of aesthetic responsiveness. His reputation was developed and strengthened during the Edwardian years. His greatest recognition came after WWII, when he had almost completely ceased writing fiction. His ability to create characters and situations of great human significance, his speculative power, and his qualities as a serious moralist with great ability as a perceptive realist in displaying the Edwardian and post war society are among the strengths of his writing style. Women figured strongly in his upbringing. His father had died when he was 1 1/2 years old. He was raised primarily by his mother. A time which was important to his early life was his residence at Rooksnest, in Hertfordshire. He developed a love for the English countryside, and Rooksnest became a model for Howards End While at Cambridge, he became a member of a group called the Cambridge Conversazione Society. This group discussed moral, intellectual, and aesthetic issues. Many of the members later formed a London group known as the
