F. SCOTT FITZGERALD Author Name at birth: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald Fitzgerald was one of the best known American authors of the 1920s and '30s and is closely associated with the optimism and excesses of that era's "Jazz Age." Fitzgerald's stories often featured people like himself: middle-American types infatuated with the wealth and status of upper-crust society. In the mid-1920s he lived in Paris where he was friends with Ernest Hemingway and other literary expatriates. Fitzgerald was a popular celebrity of the day and he and his wife, Zelda, became famous for their extravagant lifestyle, drinking bouts and (eventually) erratic behavior. His major published novels include This Side of Paradise The Great Gatsby (1925), and Tender Is the Night
Extra credit : Fitzgerald was named for his distant cousin, Francis Scott Key, the composer of the American National Anthem... Other American writers of Fitzgerald's era included John Steinbeck Langston Hughes and William Faulkner Fitzgerald Centennary Page

F SCOTT FITZGERALD
"What people are ashamed of usually makes a good story." Birthplace

Minnesota, US
Education
Princeton University, where he concentrated on short stories rather than study.
Other jobs
He joined the army in 1917 and was later a Hollywood screenwriter.
Did you know? Fitzgerald polished the script of Gone With The Wind. Critical verdict Famous overnight for his first novel This Side of Paradise, he became known more for his lifestyle than his literature and is still remembered as the glamorous, self-destructive symbol of the Jazz Age ("It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire", he wrote). It was only after his death that his importance - or perhaps the importance of The Great Gatsby - was fully recognised. Recommended works The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night and the short stories.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald
    and the American Dream
    F. Scott Fitzgerald's life is a tragic example of both sides of the American Dream - the joys of young love, wealth and success, and the tragedies associated with excess and failure. Named for another famous American, a distant cousin who authored the Star Spangled Banner, Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul Minnesota on September 24, 1896. The son of a failed wicker furniture salesman (Edward Fitzgerald) and an Irish immigrant with a large inheritance (Mary "Mollie" McQuillan), Fitzgerald grew up in a solidly Catholic and upper middle class environment. 1935 Portrait by David Silvette, courtesy National Portrait Gallery. Fitzgerald started writing at an early age. His high school newspaper published his detective stories, encouraging him to pursue writing more enthusiastically than academics. He dropped out of Princeton University to join the army and continued to pursue his obsession, writing magazine articles and even musical lyrics. In between writing novels, Fitzgerald was quite prolific as a magazine story writer. The Saturday Evening Post in particular served as a showcase for his short works of fiction, most of which revolved around a new breed of American woman - the young, free-thinking, independent "flapper" of the Roaring Twenties. The Fitzgeralds enjoyed fame and fortune, and his novels reflected their lifestyle, describing in semi-autobiographical fiction the privileged lives of wealthy, aspiring socialites. Fitzgerald wrote his second novel - "The Beautiful and the Damned" a year after they were married. Three years later, after the birth of their first and only child, Scottie, Fitzgerald completed his best-known work: "The Great Gatsby."

    Introduction
    Task Resources ... Teacher Resource
Introduction F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece, The Great Gatsby , is thought by many to be the definitive novel of the 1920s. This fascinating era, know also as the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, was a time of great social, economic, and cultural change in America, all of which is reflected throughout the novel through by a number of parties, both large and small. You can tell much about people by their parties: their tastes, their social status, their friends, their lifestyles. And besides, who doesn't love a party?
The Task Your task for this WebQuest is to become "party planners" and collaborate to plan a Jazz Age bash worthy of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald themselves. Each of you will choose a role and you will research the 20s from the perspective of that role. After you've gathered the information and shared it with the other members of your group, you will all collaborate to create your party for the class (minus the bathtub gin, of course!).
The Process You will plan a Jazz Age party that will include appropriate entertainment, guests, attire, food and libations. In a group of four you will research the historical, cultural and social background for information which will lead you to make your choices for your party plan. Each individual will be responsible for helping to research background information with the group, gathering information regarding his/her role as well as the success of the group in planning the party.

    Biography
The 1920's, also known as the Jazz Age, were wild times, and Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was its king. Although he lead one of the most wild and luxurious lifestyles of anyone during the decade, Fitzgerald was known more for his prominent works of literature, which have gained a permanent place among the American classics. Fitzgerald was born on September 29, 1896 in St. Paul Minnesota. His prename, Francis Scott Key, was given to him to honor his distant ancestor who wrote the National Anthem. Fitzgerald's father, Edward Fitzgerald, was from Maryland while his mother, Mary McQuillan, was the daugher of an Irish-Catholic immigrant. Fitzgerald entered St. Paul Academy when he was a boy, and started to write for the school newspaper when he was thirteen. During 1911-1913, he attended the Newman School, a Catholic Prep School in New Jersey. There, he met Father Sigourney Fay, who encouraged him to pursue his ambitions and to achieve personal success and distinction. Afterwards, he entered Princeton University, where he grew on his writing abilities by writing for school media. However, he neglected his studies and was put on academic probation. In 1917, Fitzgerald joined the army to fight in World War I. In June of 1918, he was assigned to Camp Sheridan in Alabama. There, he fell in love with Zelda Sayre. After being turned down during a marriage proposal due to his lack of success, Fitzgerald returned to St. Paul to begin work on his novel
