Samuel Taylor Coleridge (c. 1772-1834) English poet and one of the founders of the romantic Movement in England. Coleridge is probably best known for his hypnotic long poems, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Christabel . Even people who have never read the Rime have come under its influence: its words have given the English language the metaphor of an albatross around one's neck, the (mis)quote of "water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink", and the phrase "a sadder but wiser man." Christabel is known for its musical rhythm and language and its Gothic tale. Kubla Khan , or, A Vision in a Dream, A Fragment , although shorter, is also widely known and loved. It has strange, dreamy imagery and (like most good poems) can be read on many levels. The name of Ted Nelson's Xanadu Project comes from the first line of Kubla Khan . Both Kubla Khan and Christabel have additional " romantic " aura because they were never finished. Coleridge's shorter, meditative "conversation poems" speak from the heart of the man who wrote them. These include both quiet poems like This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison and Frost at Midnight and also strongly emotional poems like Dejection and The Pains of Sleep Although known today primarily for his poetry, Coleridge also published essays and books on literary theory and criticism and on politics, philosophy, and theology. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15, 1875 in Holborn, England (a suburb of London). His father, Daniel Hughes Taylor, was a native of Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Daniel Taylor came to England to study medicine. He was a student at Taunton College, Somerset and later at Kings College in London. His work led him to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and to obtain a license from the Royal College of Physicians. His father was not a part of Coleridge-Taylor's life, returning to Sierra Leone either before Samuel's birth or while he was a very young boy. William Tortolano in his book Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; Anglo-Black Composer, 1875-1912 (Metuchen, NJ, Scarecrow, 1977) states: The young doctor became an assistant... The white patients seemed to like the young assistant... Eventually he sought a practice of his own but this became disastrous because of resentment of his color. As an assistant he was received with little reservation, but as an independent doctor he was mistrusted. Dr. Taylor returned to Africa around 1876. As a child Coleridge-Taylor studied violin and sang in the choir of St. George's Church, Croydon. At the age of fifteen he was admitted by Sir George Grove to the Royal College of Music as a violin student. While at the Royal College his interest in composition grew. With the support of Colonel Herbert Walters, one of his first benefactors, and Grove, arrangements were made that Coleridge-Taylor would study composition with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. While studying with Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor competed for one of the nine open scholarships at the college and was awarded the fellowship in composition (1893). At that time Grove wrote, "Now you are a scholar...you are now before the world..."

A precocious reader and talker as a child, he was educated at Christ's Hospital School, London, where he began his friendship with Charles Lamb and wrote his early sonnets, and Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1794 he met Robert Southey and together they planned Pantisocracy, an ideal community to be founded in America, but the project collapsed after a quarrel. Coleridge's sonnets were published in the Morning Chronicle, and in 1795 he wrote 'The Eolian Harp' for Sara Fricker, whom he married in the same year, although the marriage was an unhappy one. He first met Dorothy and William Wordsworth in 1797 and a close association developed between them. Coleridge wrote his famous 'Kubla Khan' in the same year, followed in 1798 by 'Frost at Midnight'. In 1799 he and Wordsworth published the 'Lyrical Ballads', which marked a conscious break with 18th-century tradition and included one of Coleridge's greatest poems, 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. During a visit to the Wordsworths in 1799 he met Sara Hutchinson, who became his lifelong love and the subject of his 'Asra' poems. In the following year Coleridge and his family settled at Greta Hall, Keswick, where he completed the second part of 'Christabel', begun in 1798, but also became addicted to opium. In 1804 he separated from his wife and spent the following years in the Mediterranean or London, returning in 1808 to live with the Wordsworths in Grasmere. In 1809 he established The Friend, a political, literary and philosophical weekly journal, which he published regularly over the next year.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge Born the son of a vicar in 1772 in Ottery St Mary, Devon, England, Coleridge was the youngest of a large family and had an unhappy childhood. Went to Jesus College, Cambridge with the intention of studying to enter the Church, he interrupted his education to enlist in the 15th Dragoons in 1793 but it wasn't to his taste and his family rescued him and returned to Cambridge. In 1794 he met Robert Southey and they subsequently collaborated on an historical play, The Fall of Robespierre. Coleridge moved to Somerset in 1797 and Coleridge subsequently met William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. Unquestionably, his association with Wordsworth was a source of inspiration and his finest work, in my view, The Ancient Mariner was written during this period. His relationship with Wordsworth became strained in the early nineteenth century and Coleridge really never again reached the early heights. This is not intended to become a comprehensive archive of his work but a small sampling and the poems here represent favourites of mine.

However I re-visited Coleridge when his name was mentioned during a philosophy lecture whilst I was trying to relate what had been said of Kant (1724-1804) to our everyday experiences. I moved on to study and experiment with perception, a subject on which I was being examined. So there are other disciplines apart from English Literature that Coleridge more or less contributed to and are worthy of study. A biography should reveal those life experiences that inspired his eclectic output. There are many that exist in print but few on the web. I was attracted to one biographical sketch links to significant centres of research and excellence to be useful.
