format this article to print CAMP, JOHN LAFAYETTE (1828-1891). John Lafayette Camp, soldier and political leader, was born on February 20, 1828, near Birmingham, Alabama, the son of John Lafayette and Elizabeth (Brown) Camp. In 1848 he graduated from the University of Tennessee, and the following year he moved to Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. There he taught school, became a prosperous cotton planter, and established himself as one of the leading attorneys of East Texas. In 1851 he married Mary Ann Ward, the daughter of William Ward, a well-known physician. The couple eventually had five children. When the Civil War qv began, Camp was first elected captain of a company and then colonel of the Fourteenth Texas Cavalry. The regiment served in Texas and Arkansas in the early months of the war but was later transferred east of the Mississippi River to the Confederate Army of Tennessee. There the regiment was consolidated with the Tenth Texas Cavalry, Dismounted, and assigned to Mathew D. Ector's qv brigade. Camp saw action at the battles of Richmond and Cumberland Gap, Kentucky; Murfreesboro (Stone's River), Tennessee; and Chickamauga and Altoona, Georgia. He was twice wounded and twice captured.

East Texas Research Center Home HISTORY John Calhoun Birdwell, son of Allen and Luinda Ross Birdwell, was born in Lawrence County, Alabama on April 7, 1829. By 1845 the family had moved to Rusk County, Texas, where Allen Birdwell served as a State Representative to the Texas Legislature from 1853 to 1854 and from 1863 to 1864. In 1849 John C. Birdwell married Adaline Burney Cunningham, and they resided a number of years at Mount Enterprise, Rusk County before moving to Flatswood, Nacogdoches County shortly before the Civil War. John served in Company H of the 17th Dismounted Cavalry and was captured at Arkansas Post on the Arkansas River. He died on January 6, 1869. A farmer, John Birdwell included instructions for running the farm in his absence in his letters written to his wife during the Civil War. Her letters report the progress of crops and livestock. The letters of both recount their hardships during the war as well as news of family and friends. Birdwell describes Confederate camp conditions depicting disease epidemics, food, music, gambling, funerals, weather, and ragged condition of the troops. He was not a slave holder and waxes bitter about the slave owners' causing the war then paying substitutes to fight for them. Most of his letters were written from Camp Nelson and Camp Hope, Arkansas and contain an underlying refrain about the unreliability of mail service during the war. The letters are typescript and typescript carbon. Biographical and genealogical materials have been added to the collection.

St. John Bosco, Our Patron Saint A man with a vision, with an awareness of the good that lives in people, with an ability of dreaming dreams of beauty for those he met along his way, this is John Bosco. John was born in 1815 in Recchi, Italy. When John was two, his father died prematurely. As a boy, John lived on a farm with his family doing the only thing they knew how, farming. Poverty and a lack of formal education in the home did not stop the growth of John Bosco as a person. His mother was for real, realizing the importance of God in life. Getting a formal education was a constant struggle for John. The family finances being what they were, his brothers felt that he was wasting time, energy, and money and that it would be better for all if he stopped going to school and worked on the farm, earning money. John was talented. He must have understood physical fitness for as a youngster he was known and respected as the town¹s acrobat and juggler. Many would assemble to witness his tricks. What was amazing is the fact that before any performance he would ask his audience to join him in prayer. God was his friend. This friendship with God became powerful and slowly John prepared for the priesthood. In 1841 at the age of 26, John was ordained priest. He was now ready to make his contribution toward the poor and homeless.

He married Mrs. Dotty Morris. His first son, West Harris Camp was born about 1806. In the 1810 census he was living in Rockcastle, KY. In this census John was shown with two male children under ten years of age (West Harris and Joseph W.) and one female child under ten (Nancy, born in 1810). His father, Joseph, was in Pulaski County, KY (died 1813/14). For his father's estate in Rutherford County, NC., he was present on January 7, 1820 and signed the deeds on the last three pieces of property which his father owned in North Carolina. John S. Camp acquired fifty acres by land grant on Goos Creek in Casey County, KY, forty or fifty miles west of Rockcastle County. He then moved to Alabama and his son George L. Camp was born in there in 1822. By 1828 he was in Hart Township, Warrick County, Indiana where his brother, Benjamin and his nephew, William had been since before 1820. Between the birth of George L. in Alabama and John's move to Indiana, his wife, Dotty Morris Camp, died and he married Jane Ann Powers. His daughter, Susan Jane Camp was born in Warrick County, IN in February 1829.

The 26 years he devoted to the Greater Indianapolis Y, the last 15 as Camp Director, reached a culmination on May 17, 1971, when over 100 of his former campers, fellow workers and friends showed up at Flatrock Camp to honor his retirement.
