THE TARZAN EQUATION
A Comparison As longtime fans of the Tarzan novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as Disney fans extraordinaire, we faced a dilemma: how would Disney's new animated Tarzan feature stack up against the original novels? Would it be good Disney, but bad Tarzan? Or perhaps the other way around? Would it satisfy both the Mousketeer and the Tarmangani spirit in us? Here are the results of our musings. ITEM ERB DISNEY OUR OPINION CONCLUSION The date. According to Tarzan authorities, approximately the year 1908. During the reign of Queen Victoria, which ended in 1901. Even though it is inaccurate, the Victorian era lends a particular charm to the characters. It helps that it's our favorite historical age. This date would give us trouble if the entire life of Tarzan were to be explored, but it works for a one-shot film. For more on the date of Tarzan click here. Tarzan: appearance. Blue eyes; attractive, but not classically handsome The most important thing about any Tarzan project is Tarzan. If he's not right, you're wasting your time. Disney's Tarzan has a great look. So far, so good. Tarzan: dialogue.

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Born to a respected Civil War officer and successful distiller, Edgar should have had a life as a successful businessman with military training. And it started that way, without financial worries, sent to the private schools of Chicago and then off to the Philip Academy in Andover, Mass. Something went wrong there and Edgar was expelled. Burroughs returned to the midwest and was placed in a military academy in Michigan. Eventually, Edgar joined the US Cavalry and was sent to Arizona. That didn't work out either, and with family intervention, Edgar gave up the military life, prematurely.
Marriage to a childhood sweetheart helped Edgar offset numerous, unsuccessful business ventures that seemed to have no end. At age 35, Burroughs tried his hand at writing fiction.
Burroughs first published story, "Under the Moon of Mars," appeared in 1911 in

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer who created Tarzan and fantastic tales of science fiction, was born February 23, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois to Major George Tyler Burroughs and Mary Evaline (Zieger). Edgar Burroughs unsuccessfully pursued a series of careers until he was 35 years old: soldier, cowboy, salesman, and other singular interests. It wasn't until his Oak Park years, between 1914 and 1919, that Burroughs became a successful author. While living in Chicago and Oak Park, Burroughs created many of his most memorable characters. The first Tarzan book, Tarzan the Ape Man , was completed in May 1912. Burroughs was also reknown for writings including the "John Carter of Mars" books, magazine stories, and many other published works. Burroughs captivated many children and adults alike with his imaginative tales. Today his legacy lives on in print film video and online Burroughs' ERB, Inc.

Del Rey Internet Newsletter 1998: , whose five-book classic Riverworld series will return to bookstores this summer (in deluxe trade paperback editions), has turned in the manuscript for THE DARK HEART OF TIME, a brand-new Tarzan fantasy that blends the quirky Farmer style with the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs approach to adventure. Winner of the 1953 Hugo Award for the novella The Lovers . Winner of the 1968 Hugo Award for the novella Riders of the Purple Wage . Winner of the 1972 Hugo Award for the novel To Your Scattered Bodies Go . "Reading Farmer is an experience in intellect and imagination. Even his least memorable books have educational aspects which entertain as well as inform. "Farmer was unafraid of tackling taboo subjects. He was responsible for breaking the ground for alien sex in science fiction literature. He also acted as apologist for the literary mistakes or well-meaning fabrications of authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, L. Frank Baum, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle by writing the true stories of their protagonists. "For instance, his analytical study of Tarzan takes on both academic and whimsical dimensions. In The Lord of the Trees , Farmer sets the historical record straight about the jungle hero. In A Feast Unknown, Farmer presents both a more primordial and a truly science fictional perspective. Scholars take note."

Edgar Rice Burroughs
(1875-1950) started his writing career out of sheer desperation. With a family to feed and numerous job failures he was frequently forced to pawn personal items. He began writing down his daydreams and from this evolved his first manuscript Under the Moons of Mars (later published as A Princess of Mars ) which earned him $400, an amazing sum of money at the time. Burroughs often dreamed of escaping his responsibilities and living as a "noble savage." Perhaps this was the inspiration for Tarzan, the story of an English boy raised by apes. Burroughs spent 6 months in 1911 writing Tarzan and made $700. Fans immediately began clamoring for more. Burroughs quickly became "the king of the pulps." Money and recognition began rolling in. His third installment of The Return of Tarzan featured an N.C. Wyeth cover. By September of 1913, Burroughs was supporting his family of five solely by his writing. The Tarzan empire caught the attention of Hollywood, and the first of many successful Tarzan features was produced in 1918. Burroughs was less than pleased with the film result. The screen Tarzan, with his language of grunts and gestures, bore little resemblance to Burroughs' Lord Greystoke, who was fluent in English and French by the end of the first book. Despite Burroughs' distaste (he declined to attend the film's premiere)
