After a brief period at the village free school, Bunyan learned the tinker's trade, which he followed intermittently throughout his life. Joining the parliamentary army in 1644, he served until 1647. The reading of several pious books and a constant study of the Bible intensified Bunyan's religious beliefs, and in 1653 he began acting as lay preacher for a congregation of Baptists in Bedford. In this capacity he came into conflict with the Quakers led by George Fox and turned to writing in defense of his beliefs. In 1660 agents of the restored monarchy arrested him for unlicensed preaching, and he remained in prison for the next 12 years. During this period Bunyan wrote nine books, the most famous of which is Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666), a fervent spiritual autobiography. Soon after his release in 1672 he was reimprisoned briefly and wrote the first part of his masterpiece

H OME B OOKS ... RDER A BOUT J OHN B UNYAN The young man walked about the grounds of the farmyard deep in thought. Before him lay a decision that would change the course of history. The man was John Bunyan, the date was November 12,1660 and it is an early autumn evening. Just moments before, the master of the house had taken him aside and in an agitated voice said, "Oh Mr. Bunyan, there is a warrant out against you, and the officers are on the lookout for you. We cannot have our meeting! ... You must leave!" "What, brother," says Bunyan, "go away and not have the meeting!" "Oh yes, Mr. Bunyan, they are in search of you, and they'll have you in prison if they can find you." "What if they do? I will by no means stir, neither will I have the meeting dismissed for this." Brave words! Words spoken in haste less than an hour before. But now, as he thinks more rationally under the calming influence of reason will he not sing a different song? The farmer's wife comes to hang out the afternoons wash. She walks with that endearing waddle peculiar to women about to give birth and his thoughts turn to his own wife, Elizabeth. She is also on the verge of birth. How will his loved one fare if he is cast into prison or perhaps exiled? What about the new infant and his little blind daughter, Mary? Ah, dear blind child. She is the pride of his life and the thought forcing her to live as a fatherless child tears at his heart.

Christian Allegory in the Seventeenth Century:
A Comparison of George Herbert and John Bunyan
    by
    Rebecca Branham Dimon
Delivered at the Conference on Christianity and Literature
    Baylor University
October 1983 The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of Christian allegory in seventeenth-century poetry and prose by examining selections from George Herbert and John Bunyan. In comparing the allegorical works of these two men, I will concentrate primarily on their characters as personified abstractions or as metonymic representations that is, the name of one thing for something associated with it by examining their uses of dialogue and the pilgrimage motif to create the images of their characters. Angus Fletcher describes metonymy in allegories in his book Allegory. Our earlier view was that all agents in allegory are becoming so fixed in sense that they begin to constitute images (that was indeed how they were introduced into the poem, for a personified abstraction is necessarily a sort of image). This remark is further explained in a footnote as follows: The intermediate stage between an image and an agent is a name
