Heroes of Cyberspace: John Brunner
by Charles A. Gimon
for INFO NATION "For all the claims one hears about the liberating impact of the data-net, the truth is that it's wished on most of us a brand-new reason for paranoia." John Brunner, "The Shockwave Rider", 1975. John Brunner contributed to the world's science fiction heritage for over forty years. Publishing his first novel at age 17 in 1951, he continued to put out traditional "hard" science fiction through the fifties and sixties. Among several dozen titles he produced, four stand out: "The Sheep Look Up", "The Jagged Orbit", "Stand on Zanzibar", and "The Shockwave Rider", all published between 1968 and 1975. "Stand on Zanzibar", which won a Hugo award in 1968, moved Brunner out of deep-space adventures and into the near-future dystopias which were popular in the late sixties and early seventies (think of the films "Soylent Green" or "A Clockwork Orange"), and which prepared the way for the cyberpunk movement. The world of "Stand on Zanzibar" is an overpopulated and generally stressed-out world of the early 21st century. This is a world beset by all variety of problems, some related to diminishing resources, some related to the breakneck progress of technology. But it's a world not far removed from our own: nation-states still hold power, some people still have regular jobs, people even still use paper mail and voice phones. The main motif of "Stand on Zanzibar" is the stress-symptom: what happens to people when there are starting to be too many of them? Brunner makes shrewd guesses not so much about science or catastrophe, but about how politics, society and even pop culture would be affected. He coins a future slang word "mucker" to describe a person who snaps under the stress and flies into a homicidal rage.

"When I was in school, and hadn't much cash to waste on things like science fiction, one of my criteria for buying or not buying a magazine was whether or not it included a Simak, a Sturgeon, an Anderson, or a Leiber. I just plain liked those four in especial." Brunner was an officer in the Royal Air Force, 1953-55. After a few quick employments following the military, John became a professional writer in 1958, augmenting income from Science Fiction novels with song writing and poetry. In his SF novels, Brunner liked to follow social issues and civil rights as society progressed, often writing about the environment or computers, and having definitive views about political systems (finding all flawed). One such novel, The Shockwave Rider , 1975, coined the term "worm" to describe computer viruses. Other important works included

25. John Brunner: A Remembrance
A short memorial to brunner written on the occasion of his death in 1995.

John Brunner: A Remembrance
The following remembrance was written on the occasion of the death, on 25 August 1995, of science fiction writer John Brunner, at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland: John Kilian Houston Brunner wasn't just a famous pro writer to me. He was a friend of mine for the past 20-odd years. I can't say just when I was first aware of his work, but I remember reading Stand on Zanzibar upon its publication in 1968. That was an impressive piece of work, by a writer with a great cynical bent and an understanding of what makes people tick and why things go wrong and that was precisely the sort of insight he was best at bringing into science fiction. Our personal association began, I think, in 1972, when I read a short story of his, "Planetfall," which was contained in a collection, From This Day Forward . It was a brief mood piece about a girl in a run-down spaceport town who meets a boy from a spacefaring generation ship that puts down in the port for supplies; they meet and talk for only a night and then separate, never to meet again. I was 19 and a budding composer, and so I thought, "This would make a wonderful short opera!" Of course I had to have his permission, and I wrote him care of Doubleday & Co. I don't know what some other writers would have done, but John wrote back in the friendliest terms and said he would like to see me give a try at the project. He didn't know who I was, he'd never heard a note I'd written, and for all I know he may not have known where Santa Monica (where I then lived) was. But the idea that someone wanted to take his story (if not his actual words), and make an opera out of it, was exciting to him. We had a lively conversation in letters for some months, in which we exchanged ideas on music (about which he knew a great deal), on liberal and radical politics (about which he knew even more), about anything and everything. And then finally he happened to visit Los Angeles. He would be staying at the home of Kris and Lil Neville, and some other friends would be popping by, and he

Reviews of two of the author's books, The Compleat Traveller in Black and A Maze of Stars , collected from Usenet.

Date: Sun, 02 Aug 92 02:55:57 GMT Organization: Netcom - Online Communication Services (408 241-9760 guest) Lines: 31 "A Maze of Stars" isn't a novel; it's a collection of vignettes. Centuries after it seeded a region with over six hundred colonies, the self-aware colony ship is revisiting those colonies and observing what humanity has made of itself on many alien and often-hostile planets. For some colonies a two-page exposition suffices, at others we follow the doings of some of one or more of its inhabitants for a dozen pages or more. The framing matrix 'story' would be incorrect which binds these vignettes is the dilemma of the ship, which finds its programming to be constricting and possibly error-prone. But the solution to this dilemma, which is revealed at the end, has little or nothing to do with the rest of the book. Any solution could have been revealed here, and been just as useful and just as plausible. This isn't to say that the book isn't worth reading. It's a well-crafted travelogue. (It's not easy to write a three-hundred-page travelogue covering dozens of worlds without boring the reader.) And there is some meat in the unifying question of what 'humanity' means. But in the end, this book is unsatisfying. The main thing it has going for it is that it collects a large number of good but undeveloped ideas and good but undeveloped ideas are the most common commodity in science fiction. Not a bad book. Just not a good book. - Dani Zweig dani@netcom.com 'T is with our judgements as our watches, none Go alike, yet each believes his own Alexander Pope

Traveller in Black
John Brunner, 1934-1995
The late John Brunner remembered by Dave Langford angled somewhat to the viewpoint of The Skeptic magazine, which he supported from its inception and which asked for this piece. The British sf author John Kilian Houston Brunner died on 25 August 1995 after suffering a stroke at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow. At the convention's awards ceremony, his friend Robert Silverberg recalled John's sf achievements and suggested that rather than a minute's silence, he'd have liked a last round of applause. The standing ovation continued for four minutes. John was indeed a giant of sf, dealing at his best with lived-in futures combining extrapolative exhilaration and the nightmare of future shock. Stand on Zanzibar (1968) with its focus on overpopulation was his recognized blockbuster, winning the coveted Hugo award (the sf Oscar, usually monopolized by Americans). It slightly overshadows its companion volumes The Jagged Orbit The Sheep Look Up (1972) a scarifying polemic against pollution which ends with the stench of all America burning and The Shockwave Rider (1975), prophetically mapping problems of information overload, computer viruses, rampant hacking and the net.
