Impressum Herkomer-Museum Der später weltberühmte englische Maler Sir Hubert von Herkomer wurde 1849 in Waal geboren, das damals zu Landsberg gehörte. Die bayerischen Eltern wanderten 1851 zunächst nach Amerika aus, um dann 1858 nach England überzusiedeln. Das einzige Kind seiner Eltern sollte ein "freier" Künstler werden. Die Anfänge hierzu startete der junge Mann mit Holzschnitten und Stichen bei der Londoner Zeitschrift "The Graphic" in den 70er Jahren. 1875 gelang Hubert Herkomer mit dem Gemälde "The last Muster" (= der letzte Anruf) ein großer Erfolg. In den darauffolgenden 15 Jahren schuf Herkomer eine Reihe ernstzunehmender Bilder sozialkritischen Inhalts. "On Strike" (im Streik) von 1891 ist eines der berühmtesten. Gleichzeitig stieg Herkomer zu einem der gefragtesten Porträtmaler in England, Deutschland, und den USA auf. Die Bildnisse von Richard Wagner (1877) und John Ruskin (1879, National Porträit Gallery London) gelten als die besten.

You are in: National Portrait Gallery Search the collection Room 23 Expansion and Empire Few images testify so strongly to Victorian Britain's confidence in its position as a world power, and belief in the benefits of its evangelising mission on other peoples, as the large painting of Queen Victoria presenting a Bible which dominates this room. Yet Britain's rise to dominance during Victoria's reign was often a story of conflict, whether securing its interests against the other great powers or suppressing unrest in remote parts of the world. The portraits in this room record the disastrous war against Russia in the Crimea from 1854 to 1856. An administrative and military fiasco, the war caused shocking suffering to ordinary soldiers but also produced conspicuous acts of mercy, the theme of Jerry Barrett's two large paintings. Events in India were soon to cause further disquiet. Thomas Jones Barker's 'Relief of Lucknow' represents an incident from the Indian Rebellion of 1857 when British authority over a large area of northern India disintegrated. Travellers, administrators and military men: the personalities who acted as agents of the Victorian empire were as diverse as the territories over which Britain held influence. Included in the room are men such as Richard Burton; Sir James Brooke, whose family governed Sarawak for three generations; the dashing Captain Burnaby, shown in Tissot's stylish portrait, and Robert Baden-Powell, whose defence of Mafeking at the turn of the century inspired a public wearied by the setbacks of the Boer War. For the Victorians, the exploits of such figures exemplified a type of manly heroism which was central to the imperial consciousness.

Tate Collection Advanced Search Ophelia's Travels Ownership History Sir Henry Tate Gift Exhibition History Friends and Foes Sir Henry Tate Gift On 21 July, 1897, the Tate Gallery was ceremonially opened to the public by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. Sir Henry Tate not only presented his collection of 65 paintings and two pieces of sculpture to the nation, (most of it was work from the Victorian period), but he also funded the building to house them and financed the first extensions in 1899. He wanted London "to have the best lighted Gallery in Europe and I cannot be a party to building a gallery in which every picture would not have top light' ( Henry Tate, Patron of British Art , Robin Hamlyn in Henry Tate's Gift, A Centenary Celebration, Tate Gallery, 1987). Sir Henry Tate by Sir Hubert von Herkomer Obtaining the gallery site was not easy. Sir Henry Tate made his decision to give his pictures to the nation in 1889 and wrote to the Trustees and Director of the National Gallery in a letter dated 23rd October. He asked that the works be kept together and exhibited as 'The Tate Collection'. The National Gallery could not provide adequate space so declined the offer. Sir Henry Tate then offered his collection to the Government on condition that a gallery be provided that he approved of. After a long search and a protest from scientists about the possibility of the collection being housed on a plot set aside for the London Science Museum, Sir Henry Tate announced that he would finance the £80,000 cost of a new gallery. No site could he found so he withdrew his offer.
