The Museum's collection and displays tell the story of Bushey with an emphasis on the unique artistic history of the village. The Museum has a large collection of works, artefacts and ephemera relating to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his famous school of art in Bushey. Also well represented are Lucy Kemp-Welch and other artists who were drawn to Bushey. Bushey's social history is illustrated through historical maps, displays of archaeology from earliest times to the present day, examples of the wide range of products made in Bushey and displays on life in the village. 'The Foster Mother', a Bushey scene by Herkomer, was lost for 100 years. Found in a gentleman's club in Australia, it returned to Bushey in 1994. BRITISH CINEMA SIR HUBERT VON HERKOMER: ARTIST AND FILM-MAKER Michael Pritchard - Christie's, South Kensington, UK Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA was a leading portrait painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. His artistic career had begun as an illustrator in the 1870s for periodicals such as the Graphic which, together with his early paintings, had earned him a reputation as a social realist. For a short period from 1912 until his death in 1914 Herkomer built a film studio on his estate in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and produced seven films including a comedy and costume dramas. They were released and shown in London and elsewhere and at least one was taken for exhibition in the United States. To date none have been located. This paper will look at his career and the factors which led him to take up film as an artistic medium, the practical and innovative aspects of his studio and his film-making activities, his influences and his legacy to the film industry. He noted in his diary that Richardson was "as solid in his friendship as in his figure. Big-bodied, big-hearted, large-minded, full-brained, loving as he is pugnacious." Richardson drew up exterior designs for the artist's English country house, which was built in the 1890s, presumably as payment for the portrait. Juni 2002 Bayern Seite 60n / Deutschland Seite 60 / München Seite 60 Samuel Bak erhält den Herkomer-Preis Chronist einer steinernen Zeit Der jüdische Künstler überlebte den Holocaust – in einem Landsberger Lager malte er 1946 seine ersten Bilder Von Hans Kratzer Landsberg Schon als Bub besaß Samuel Bak eine besondere künstlerische Begabung. Worauf der Expressionist Arno Nadel die Eltern hinwies: „Belästigt das arme Kind nicht mit Kleinigkeiten. Aber versorgt es jeden Tag mit Kunst, Kunst, Kunst.“ Die Mutter befolgte den Rat – trotz auswegloser Zeiten. „Es verwundert mich noch heute, dass sie ihr Talent, einen Kunstlehrer zu finden, trotz der schwierigen Lebensumstände nutzte, wann immer es ging“, sagte Samuel Bak später. Berufener Autodidakt Im Lager Landsberg begann er, seine Erlebnisse im Ghetto und auf der Flucht zu verarbeiten. Von da an sind sein Leben und seine Kunst nicht mehr voneinander zu trennen: Sein Werk kreist um die Themen Holocaust und Überlebenskampf. „Ich merkte, dass ich dazu verdammt war, als Person und als Künstler ein Autodidakt zu werden. Ich erkannte, dass ich eine besondere Geschichte zu erzählen hatte“, schrieb Bak und machte sich in Israel, Frankreich, Italien, in der Schweiz und in den USA ans Werk. Seine Bilder wurden in allen großen Galerien und Museen der Welt gezeigt. An seiner Berufung zweifelte Bak keinen Augenblick: „Der Krieg könnte morgen ausbrechen, die Welt könnte in Trümmer fallen, aber Kunst würde immer Kunst bleiben . . .“, lautete sein Credo. Auch dann, wenn er aus eigenem Erleben heraus beklemmende Ausweglosigkeit darstellte, wie in dem berühmten Bild „Die Fahrt“. Es zeigt ein Fluchtschiff, beladen mit Trümmern einer Stadt, das ins Meer sticht. Aber das Schiff kann sich nicht bewegen, weil es aus Stein ist, und selbst wenn es schwimmen würde, wäre den Menschen an Bord nicht geholfen, denn die Schornsteine des Schiffes entpuppen sich als Teile eines Krematoriums. Die Symbole des Holocaust stechen immer wieder hervor: der Davidstern, das Ghetto, das Schtetl, die Schlote der Verbrennungsanlagen.

TOM MOSTYN His Life and Works He is an illustrator of id eas and a painter of emotions, dealing with them with a firmness betraying a real knowledge of human nature The Magazine of Art Born in Liverpool in 1864 and raised in Manchester, Tom Mostyn, the son of the artist Edwin Mostyn, studied at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. He had his first local exhibition in 1880, and was showing at the Royal Academy (R.A.) by the age of 29. He is mainly recognized for his romantic garden scenes, although his style was so eclectic throughout his career that it is hard to believe that the same artist created all of his paintings.
