Although aware of the art of his time, he did not follow any particular trend, but instead created brooding, poetic images out of his own perceptions, dreams, and inventions. Best known for his famous painting The Questioner of the Sphinx , his style is marked by its simplicity of form and linear patterns created by clearly defined, rhythmic contours. The movements and gestures in his work have a timeless, ritual significance, and his compositions radiate a spiritual serenity undisturbed by everyday life. This painting, in its original frame, presents Vedder's preoccupation with the theme of the soul flanked by worldly knowledge on one side, a classical figure with the face of age and experience, and by Christian faith on the other, with a face of youth and compassion surrounded by a halo. Writing to his friend and patron Agnes Ethel Tracy in 1887, Vedder encouraged her to keep the "3 heads," stating "you will never get from me a more remarkable picture." Elihu Vedder, Sr., father of Elihu the painter, was my 3rd great grandfather John J Vedder's uncle. Elihu Sr. lived in St. Augustine and Elihu the painter often came down to visit his cousin and uncle whenever he was in the US. My great grandmother inherited a beautiful hand painting which was painted for her grandfather and a few of Elihus paintings for his father was given over by will to my 3rd great grandfather. The Walker Art Building The Walker Art Building, completed in 1894, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was given by Harriet and Sophia Walker in honor of their uncle Theophilus Walker. The Walker sisters were encyclopedic collectors and supporters of art education; they selected the renowned architect Charles Follen McKim whose firm McKim, Mead and White also designed the Boston Public Library, Morgan Library in New York, and the Brooklyn Museum, among many other important commissions. A landmark building in the history of museum architecture in the United States, the Bowdoin College Museum is one of the few remaining structures in which the architectural and decorative ideals of the late nineteenth century are so fully realized. The Museum’s central rotunda is a magisterial space decorated below the dome by four large semicircular murals by the four leading painters of the American Renaissance: Elihu Vedder, Kenyon Cox, Abbott Thayer and John LaFarge. They were commissioned by McKim who believed in the unity of the arts and constitute an extremely important ensemble of architectural decoration. The original mural scheme called for each artist to paint an allegorical representation of one of the four cities perceived at the time as most central to the development of western art. Kenyon Cox portrays the seated female figure of Venice flanked on one side by a nude woman with palette and brushes representing Painting, and on the other by Mercury, the god of Commerce. The winged lion of St. Marks, a merchant ship with characteristically decorated sails and snippets of the city’s architecture, round out the tableau.
