Born 1599, Died 1641
Painter, Draftsman
Flemish
The seventh of twelve children born to a wealthy silk merchant in Belgium, Anthony van Dyck began to paint at an early age. By the age of nineteen, he had become a teacher in Antwerp. Soon afterward, he collaborated and trained with the famous Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens In his early twenties, van Dyck went to Italy, where he studied the paintings of Titian and Paolo Veronese and worked as a successful portrait painter for the Italian nobility. He became so well known that King Charles I of England summoned him to London to be his exclusive court painter and eventually gave him a knighthood. Van Dyck's numerous portraits of Charles I and his family were greatly admired by his contemporaries. Realizing that Charles's political and financial fortunes were in decline, van Dyck left England for Antwerp and Paris. A year later, after several unsuccessful projects abroad, he returned to London in ill health and died shortly thereafter. Van Dyck is buried in Saint Paul's Cathedral , a distinction reserved only for illustrious British subjects.

88 pages, 7 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches 15 color and 37 duotone illustrations, 1 color foldout ISBN 0-89236-342-8 paper, $19.95 Anthony van Dyck's portrait of Thomas Howard was made during the artist's first visit to London and marked the beginning of his brilliant international career. Thomas Howard, a prominent member of the court of James I, was to become one of the greatest and most enlightened collectors and patrons England has ever known. In this probing study, Christopher White provides a history both of Thomas Howard, and of van Dyck, whose canvases established the grand tradition of portraiture both in England and on the Continent. Illustrated with more than fifty reproductions, seventeen in color, this volume in the Getty Museum Studies in Art offers not only a complete study of a great painting but also a primer on how great collections are formed and great careers are launched. Christopher White, director of Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum, is professor of the art of the Netherlands at the University. He is the author of numerous books on Dutch and Flemish art, including the two-volume study

Overview
Anthony van Dyck, a true genius at portraiture, revealed the aspirations of his sitters. He often flatteringly elongated his subjects and portrayed them sharply from below to enhance their stature. With elaborate settings, symbolic accessories, and suggestions of movement, Van Dyck made his sitters seem at once grand and alive, inaugurating a style of formal portraiture that is still emulated today. Van Dyck's elegant likenesses were sought eagerly in the Low Countries as well as in Italy and England, where he was knighted. His mythological and religious scenes were also greatly admired and profoundly influenced later generations of artists. (continue)

DYCK, Sir Anthony Van
(b. 1599, Antwerpen, d. 1641, London)
Biography
Sir Anthony van Dyck was a Flemish painter who was one of the most important and prolific portraitists of the 17th century. He is also considered to be one of the most brilliant colorists in the history of art. Van Dyck was born on March 22, 1599, in Antwerp, son of a rich silk merchant, and his precocious artistic talent was already obvious at age 11, when he was apprenticed to the Flemish historical painter Hendrik van Balen. He was admitted to the Antwerp guild of painters in 1618, before his 19th birthday. He spent the next two years as a member of the workshop of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp. Van Dyck's work during this period is in the lush, exuberant style of Rubens, and several paintings attributed to Rubens have since been ascribed to van Dyck. Titian, Paolo Veronese, and Giovanni Bellini, he adopted colors of great richness and jewel-like purity. No other painter of the age surpassed van Dyck at portraying the shimmering whites of satin, the smooth blues of silk, or the rich crimsons of velvet. He was the quintessential painter of aristocracy, and was particularly successful in Genoa. There he showed himself capable of creating brilliantly accurate likenesses of his subjects, while he also developed a repertoire of portrait types that served him well in his later work at the court of Charles I of England. Back in Antwerp from 1627 to 1632, van Dyck worked as a portraitist and a painter of church pictures. In 1632 he settled in London as chief court painter to King Charles I, who knighted him shortly after his arrival. Van Dyck painted most of the English aristocracy of the time, and his style became lighter and more luminous, with thinner paint and more sparkling highlights in gold and silver. At the same time, his portraits occasionally showed a certain hastiness or superficiality as he hurried to satisfy his flood of commissions. In 1635 van Dyck painted his masterpiece

Portrait of Rubens' first professional printmaker (see Descent from the Cross) by his younger proteg‚ in Antwerp. Van Dyck determined to use the fluid medium of etching to record the remarkable cluster of artists around him in Antwerp around 1630; the idea draws upon engraved precedents from the last third of the sixteenth century as well as tributes to artists by their colleagues (see Aegidius Sadeler's Portrait of the Artist Spranger and his Wife). Many of the van Dyck etchings were reworked in details by engravers prior to publishing; others, including a self-portrait, remained unfinished. This image is a notable fully-etched and realized character portrait, worthy of van Dyck's dignified painted likenesses.

Dyck, Sir Anthony van (1599-1641). Apart from Rubens , the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century. In 1609 he began his apprenticeship with Hendrick van Balen in his native Antwerp and he was exceptionally precocious. Although he did not become a master in the painters' guild until 1618, there is evidence that he was working independently for some years before this, even though this was forbidden by guild regulations. Probably soon after graduating he entered Rubens's workshop. Strictly speaking he should not be called Rubens's pupil, as he was an accomplished painter when he went to work for him. Nevertheless the two years he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence upon his painting is unmistakable, although ven Dyck's style was always less energetic. In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I (1566-1625), then in 1621 to Italy, where he travelled a great deal, and toned down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. His great series of Baroque portraits of the Genoese aristocracy established the `immortal' type of nobleman, with proud mien and slender figure. The years 1628-32 were spent mainly at Antwerp.

Biography
Anthony van Dyck
Artist Belgium Born 22 Mar 1599
Died 9 Dec 1641
Apart from Rubens, the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century. In 1609 he began his apprenticeship with Hendrick van Balen in his native Antwerp and he was exceptionally precocious: on his earliest dated painting (An Elderly Man, Musées Royaux, Brussels, 1613) he has proudly inscribed his own age (14) as well as that of the sitter. Nevertheless the 2 years or so he spent with Rubens were decisive and Rubens's influence on him is unmistakable, although van Dyck's style was always less energetic and more highly-strung.
In 1620 van Dyck went to London, where he spent a few months in the service of James I, then in 1621 to Italy, where he stayed until 1627, toning down the Flemish robustness of his early pictures to create the refined and elegant style which remained characteristic of his work for the rest of his life. He travelled a good deal in Italy but worked mainly in Genoa, where he painted a series of grand portraits of the nobility in which he established a distinctive aristocratic type with proud mien and slender figure. A superb example is the full-length 'Marchesa Elena Grimaldi' (National Gallery, Washington, 1623), of which Sir David Piper wrote (Van Dyck, 1968): 'this is how one imagines any feminine aristocrat worthy of her rank must feel herself essentially to be, yet did not know it till van Dyck showed her - aloof and formally regal, but endowed with an elegance and grace that are infinitely seductive.'
