Signed 'Stanley Spencer' in full, and dated '53 in pencil. Numbered (5) in pencil from the edition of 30. Drawn and printed at the Friary Studio, 1953 (edition printed by J.Trivick). Very rare . Spencer's most important work in lithography. Bibliography: Garton - British Printmakers page 69. Excellent strong impression. On rose/pink-tinted paper (the paper was originally a darker pink tone but it has lightened with the passage of time - the darker tone can be seen in the outer margins. Print surface excellent. Stanley Spencer was without doubt one of the greatest and most individually inspired British painters of the first half of the 20th century. His painting is an individual and visionary interpretation of religious and general themes expressed in a language derived from the Bible but in a setting which is taken from his own life, whether that of Cookham where he lived, in the field hospitals or war environment in which he had worked a medical orderly during the First War, or in the shipyards during the Second. The style of his painting combines a total reality with a stylistic treatment which borrows from the old masters, especially the Italian Renaissance, as well as reflecting the ideas of his contemporaries in the Garsington circle. Few British artists of the 20th century, if any, made a greater or more individual contribution to the scope of British art.

ADVERTISEMENT Meta, the self-proclaimed IT guidance counselor, last month released a client advisory that said Microsoft will begin moving some of its proprietary technologies to Linux by the end of next year. Much of the buzz at the show, however, was about customers balking at the credibility of the report. While supposedly based on informal client interactions, the report offered specifics about which products Microsoft would move to Linux, as well as time frames for the moves.
