Rousseau, Henri Rousseau, Henri , known as Le Douanier Rousseau (1844-1910). French painter, the most celebrated of naïve artists. His nickname refers to the job he held with the Paris Customs Office (1871-93), although he never actually rose to the rank of `Douanier' (Customs Officer). Before this he had served in the army, and he later claimed to have seen service in Mexico, but this story seems to be a product of his imagination. He took up painting as a hobby and accepted early retirement in 1893 so he could devote himself to art. His character was extraordinarily ingenuous and he suffered much ridicule (although he sometimes interpreted sarcastic remarks literally and took them as praise) as well as enduring great poverty. However, his faith in his own abilities never wavered. He tried to paint in the academic manner of such traditionalist artists as Bouguereau and Gérôme, but it was the innocence and charm of his work that won him the admiration of the avant-garde: in 1908 Picasso gave a banquet, half serious half burlesque, in his honor. Rousseau is now best known for his jungle scenes, the first of which is Surprised! (Tropical Storm with a Tiger)

(National Gallery, London, 1891) and the last 'The Dream' (MOMA, New York, 1910). These two paintings are works of great imaginative power, in which he showed his extraordinary ability to retain the utter freshness of his vision even when working on a large scale and with loving attention to detail. He claimed such scenes were inspired by his experiences in Mexico, but in fact his sources were illustrated books and visits to the zoo and botanical gardens in Paris. His other work ranges from the jaunty humour of 'The Football Players' (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1908) to the mesmeric, eerie beauty of 'The Sleeping Gypsy' (MOMA, 1897). Rousseau was buried in a pauper's grave, but his greatness began to be widely acknowledged soon after his death. Previous / Henri Rousseau of 1 Born 1844, Died 1910 Painter French Henri Rousseau attracted the Parisian avant-garde's attention at the 1886 Salon des Indépendants. Throughout his life he was ridiculed by public and critics, but leading writers and artists sought out the self-taught painter's freshness of vision. In 1885 he quit his job as a customs inspector, or douanier , to pursue painting full-time. Though he claimed to have served in the army in Mexico, scholars have found no proof of this. His imagination made exotic landscapes out of Paris's botanic gardens and wild beasts out of toys and photographs. Like other Naïve painters, Rousseau used a simplifying style, non-scientific perspective , and bright colors. His particular gifts were a sensitivity to color harmonies and knowing how to subordinate parts of the canvas to the rhythm of the whole. He painted still lifes; elaborate allegories; exotic, rural, and modern urban landscapes; portraits; and enigmatic studies of children. His compositions sometimes seem to be subconscious visions; in this aspect, he anticipated the Surrealists. Rousseau maintained an art school, where he taught painting, diction, and music. He also wrote three plays. Rousseau had no hesitation in claiming for himself a place at the forefront of painting. He once remarked to his admirer Pablo Picasso, who was then borrowing heavily from African art, that they were the only great contemporary artists: "I in the modern manner and you in the Egyptian."

He was, from the first, entirely self-taught, and his work remained consistently naive and imaginative. Rousseau was called Le Douanier because before he retired to paint (1885), he held a minor post in the Paris customs service. Although, by his own account, he had lived in Mexico in his youth, his remarkable landscapes have no counterpart in nature. His jungles are an organized profusion of carefully defined yet fantastic plants, half-concealing various wild animals with staring eyes. These scenes are rendered in a vivid, almost hypnotic folk style. The finest ones include The Snake Charmer (1907; Louvre) and The Dream (1910; Mus. of Modern Art, New York City). With the same approach Rousseau employed in painting the familiar (e.g., Village Street Scene, 1909; Philadelphia Mus. of Art), he painted the haunting and dreamlike Sleeping Gypsy See R. Shattuck
