The ghost in the gallery
It's 30 years since the great abstract artist Mark Rothko killed himself in his studio. So why won't he let Adrian Searle look at his paintings in peace?
Tuesday January 9, 2001 The Guardian I can't deal with Mark Rothko. I stick my head round the door of the room devoted to his paintings at Tate Modern and lurch out, fast. The atmosphere is too hushed, broken by stifled adult sobs and the squeak of felt-tip pens, as schoolkids, sitting cross-legged on the floor, do their studious little Rothko-ettes in purple ink. I want to run away. The Miro Foundation is a good hotel for Rothko, whose encounter with Joan Miro's semi-abstract surrealist work quickened his own drive towards abstraction. The lighting isn't great, the space is a little cramped and awkward (much of Rothko's work is just too big for its surroundings), and the exhibition layout a bit confused, so that you need to be pretty hard-nosed to follow the chronology and trajectory of his art accurately. But these are small gripes.

MARK ROTHKO No. 14, 1960
Mark Rothko's passion as an artist was to explore the intellectual and abstract potentials of painting. No. 14, 1960 is a mature, masterful work that poetically achieves Rothko's intention to create a spiritual art. As eloquently stated by John Graham in 1937, "The purpose of art in particular is to re-establish a lost contact with the un-conscious . . . and to keep and develop this contact in order to bring to the conscious mind the throbbing events of the unconscious mind." Rothko's early experiments with abstraction, whether influenced by automatism, archaic art, symbolism, or anthropomorphism, ultimately sought to capture this spiritual dimension. By the 1950s and 1960s, pure color and a sense of light became Rothko's vocabulary to express his inner perceptions and to engage the viewer's unconscious responses.
Rothko's genius in the use of color as form, and his ability to hold on a single plane colors that advance and retreat, are amply demonstrated in this work. Rothko soaked paint into the canvas, resulting in a subtle diffusion that is similar to the feathery effect of watercolor. The orange form in

Lesson Plan: Feelings in Color
Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion. Abstract expressionism can be roughly divided into two general types. Jackson Pollock was representative of "action" or "gesture" painting, in which the artist's process and movements were an important aspect of the end result. Mark Rothko's work is an example of "color-field painting," in which the artist was more concerned with creating an overall field of paint. The two works included in this lesson plan are typical of each artist's work: Pollock created many so-called "drip" paintings, some in black and white and others with color; and most of Rothko's images consist of two or three floating rectangles in various color combinations.

The Mark Rothko Scholarship
In Memory of Gustave Harrow for Excellence in Art THE PROGRAM

In the autumn of 1984, the Mark Rothko Scholarship and the Marlborough Gallery Education Program were established after a highly publicized court battle involving the estate of Mark Rothko, the American abstract expressionist painter, and Marlborough, Rothko's dealer at the time of his death. (Leo Selds' book, The Legacy of Mark Rothko chronicles the suit.) As a result, a fund in the name of Mark Rothko was set up to be administered by the Board of Education of the City of New York. The annual accrued interest of this fund is used to provide scholarships to students who are planning careers in the visual arts. In 1990, the Scholarship was dedicated to the late Gustave Harrow for his contributions and commitment to the legal defense of the arts. As Assistant Attorney General for New York State, he represented the artists of the Westbeth community against co-op conversion. He also represented Richard Serra in the matter of Tilted Arc, and he represented the state in the Mark Rothko litigation. This year, the fund provided ten scholarships of $500 for selected graduating high school students to further their education in the study of art.

Rothko was formed in the spring of '97, taking its name and inspiration from Russian/American colourfield painter, Mark Rothko. Originally playing as an all-bass trio, with myself, Jon Meade from the group Geiger Counter and Crawford Blair, and just finding our way slowly to see how we might sound, we played our first gig in August ’97 at The Hope And Anchor in London with the band Monkey Boy, who we still remain friends with. We were seen at our 5th gig by Simon Williams of Fierce Panda, who offered, to release a single - this was unbelievable for us as we thought he was joking, until we saw the review he gave us in the following weeks NME. The track ‘For Danny’ (featuring a sample of the double-bass playing of folk-rock legend Danny Thompson) was the result. We were also the first band to be released on Fierce Panda off-shoot Livid Meerkat, with the 7” single, ‘Seventyseven A’/’Undone’. Julian Standen produced all three tracks. Since that first single, there have been three albums on Jon Tye's Lo Recordings label, including the debut album ‘A Negative For Francis’, various ep's, 10” and 12" singles, 7” singles and split singles, (including two releases in Belgium, ‘Storm Cycle ep’ and ‘291’ / ‘St. Seno’), collaborations and exclusive tracks on compilation albums by Leaf, Lo Recordings, Arbouse Recordings and Foundry Recordings.

Mark Rothko : Untitled
