One of the preeminent artists of his generation, Mark Rothko is closely identified with the New York School, a circle of painters that emerged during the 1940s as a new collective voice in American art. During a career that spanned five decades, he created a new and impassioned form of abstract painting. Rothko's work is characterized by rigorous attention to formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale; yet, he refused to consider his paintings solely in these terms. He explained:
It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.

22. Nbk 1/99 - Jackson Pollock Und Marc Rothko In New York
Die Rhetorik der Abstraktion.
http://www.txt.de/nbk/99_1/jackroth.htm
David Reed, Dezember 1998

of
Painting
When you abstract the essence of music and visual art, an underlying structure, form and rhythm can be discerned. The notes, rhythm and tempo of a musical piece can evoke thoughts, feelings and sensations, much the same as colors, texture, strokes and shapes in a painting. This is certainly true in my art, which is a mirroring of my internal landscape as well as a reflection of what is happening externally. My paintings, because they are abstract, are essentially energy made visible. They are an exploration of the interplay between form and formlessness, emergence and dissolution, using color, texture, and the strokes of the palette knife upon the canvas.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism is a form of art in which the artist expresses himself purely through the use of form and color. It is form of non-representational, or non-objective, art, which means that there are no concrete objects represented.
Now considered to be the first American artistic movement of worldwide importance, the term was originally used to describe the work of Arshile Gorky Willem de Kooning , and Jackson Pollock
The movement can be broadly divided into two groups: Action Painting , typified by artists such as Pollock, de Kooning, Franz Kline , and Philip Guston , put the focus on the physical action involved in painting; Color Field Painting , practiced by Mark Rothko and Kenneth Noland , among others, was primarily concerned with exploring the effect of pure color on a canvas.

ark Rothko believed that looking at a painting should be a spiritual experience. And to many of his fans, Rothko's paintings are transcendent, disclosing the presence of a high philosophical truth through the juxtaposition of colors and textures. To many art historians, Rothko ushered in the American abstract expressionism movement. His experiments in color, surface, proportion, and scale brought international acclaim and pushed abstractionisma movement away from representational, recognizable images to the forefront of modern art in the post World War II years.

American, born Daugavpils, Latvia, 1903-1970
Blue, Orange, Red, Oil on canvas 90-1/4 x 81-1/4 in. (229.2 x 205.9 cm) Gift of the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Foundation, 1966 (66.4420) As did many post-World War II painters and sculptors, Mark Rothko came to believe that recognizable images were obstacles to a direct experience of art. His solution-and his signature statement-was to use expanses of color floating in vertical sections that allowed intimacy and suggested vastness, contributing to a sense of what period critics called "the sublime." Rothko created paintings of either intense melancholy or radiant luminosity within the basic compositional format he had developed by 1949. In Blue, Orange, Red , deep fields of blue and energized orange, achieved by a feathered application of paint that reveals a hint of underlying colors, are set atop an intense red ground. These vibrant colors contrast with Rothko's generally more somber and brooding work of the 1960s. Owing to their scale and the artist's expressive use of nonrepresentational form, Rothko's paintings were aligned with Abstract Expressionism, a label he continually rejected. Although his brushwork and scumbling action are evident in his paintings, their muted surfaces produce an effect more meditative and less gestural than the works of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, for example. Rothko condensed complex relationships of color, form, and structure in a unified whole that focused painting on its essence.

Rothko attended Yale University in New Haven on a scholarship from 1921 to 1923. That year he left Yale without receiving a degree and moved to New York. In 1925 he studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League. He participated in his first group exhibition at the Opportunity Galleries in New York in 1928. During the early 1930s Rothko became a close friend of Milton Avery and Adolph Gottlieb. His first solo show took place at the Portland Art Museum in 1933. Rothko's first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1933. In 1935 he was a founding member of the Ten, a group of artists sympathetic to abstraction and expressionism. He executed easel paintings for the WPA Federal Art Project from 1936 to 1937. By 1936 Rothko knew Barnett Newman. In the early forties he worked closely with Gottlieb, developing a painting style with mythological content, simple flat shapes, and imagery inspired by primitive art. By mid-decade his work incorporated Surrealist techniques and images. Peggy Guggenheim gave Rothko a solo show at Art of This Century in New York in 1945. In 1947 and 1949 Rothko taught at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, where

Mark Rothko Biography
Rothko, Mark (1903-1970), Russian-born American painter, known for abstract paintings in which soft-edged rectangles of color seem to float weightlessly against undefined backgrounds. A major figure in the abstract expressionism movement, Rothko used color to convey a range of emotion and what the artist described as a religious experience.
Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), and emigrated to the United States in 1913.
He attended Yale University from 1921 to 1923, then left to settle in New York City. During the next five years he occasionally attended classes at the Art Students League, most notably with American painter Max Weber, but he was essentially self-taught. In New York he visited museums and the studios of artists such as Milton Avery, whose interest in simplified forms and large areas of flat, unvaried color would exercise a profound influence on him. Rothko also befriended painter Adolph Gottlieb, with whom he shared a passion for non-Western art, and later, an interest in lyrical abstraction.
Rothko's work of the 1930s, like that of many of his contemporaries, reflected the strains of life during the Great Depression. In Subway (Subterranean Fantasy) (1936, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), figures stand on a subway platform, isolated both from each other and from the world above them. The elongation of the figures and the dark color scheme are attempts to evoke a sense of claustrophobia and alienation from the spectator.
