Prints, lithographs and engravings
In the 1850s, prints, lithographs and engravings of American scenery, especially in the West, received wide popular distribution between this decade and the turn of the century, stimulating broad interest in and appreciation for the special qualities of the American landscape, including its wilderness.
Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories (U.S.)1870-1880.
Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden began his first Federally-sponsored Survey of the West in 1870. By the time it ended in 1878, the survey under his leadership has conducted landmark explorations throughout the region and contributed vitally to the scientific, photographic, and artistic representation of the Western landscape. Henry Jackson was official photographer and Thomas Moran was accompanying artist. Widely-distributed lithographs of Moran's paintings from this expedition helped publicize Yellowstone in the East, while Jackson's 1870-1878 work with the Survey quickly became the most influential photographic representation of the Western landscape and its natural wonders.

Evolution of the Conservation Movement, 1850-1920
February 12 marks the birth of painter Thomas Moran (1837-1926). His depictions of Western landscapes inspired Americans to conserve and cherish spectacular wilderness areas as part of their national heritage. In the summer of 1871, Moran joined the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories . Headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden, this scientific exploration of lands along the Yellowstone River in northwestern Wyoming and southeastern Montana included a painter and a photographer. Visual documentation not only served to verify textual reports but also stimulated public interest.

Evolution of the Conservation Movement, 1850-1920
Collaborating closely with William Henry Jackson , the expedition photographer, Moran took extensive notes and made numerous sketches of sulphur fields, hot springs, geysers, waterfalls, and evergreen mountain peaks. Returning East, Hayden carried many of Moran's sketches and Jackson's photographs to Washington, D.C. These images helped convince Congress to set aside the Yellowstone area as a national park.

That was left to a painter of Irish ancestry, born (like Thomas Cole ) in Lancashire and raised in Philadelphia: Thomas Moran. Unlike Bierstadt , this son of poor immigrant handweavers was entirely self-taught. He got some training as an engraver and opened an engraving business with his two brothers. But his heart was in painting, and his predilections intensely, youthfully Romantic. One of his earliest canvases, Among the Ruins-There He Lingered , 1856, took its title from Shelley's Alastor; or, The Spirit of Solitude (1815), in which the pure young poet is imagined pursuing "Nature's most secret steps," where'er

Thomas Moran apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, but by 1858 at the age of twenty-one, he had exhibited an oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Encouraged by the marine painter, James Hamilton, Moran traveled to London in 1861 where he was deeply impressed by the dynamic effects and glowing color of J. M. W. Turner. He also visited France and Italy in 1866 to study the Old Masters, but his early American reputation was gained as an illustrator. In 1871 Moran went west with the Hayden Expedition to record the wonders of the Yellowstone area, making annotated drawings and watercolors later used to illustrate articles in the popular press as well as the official report. Moran's watercolors and his very large oil painting, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone X 144 inches (1872 National Museum of American Art, lent by the U.S. Department of the Interior), convinced the U. S. Congress to set this area aside as America's first national park.
Moran first visited the Grand Canyon of the Colorado in 1873 and the resulting Chasm of the Colorado National Museum of American Art, lent by the U. S. Department of the Interior) further enhanced his reputation as the preeminent painter of the Southwest. In 1879

    "Water, Carry Me"
"On calm nights, when the soft wash of the sea on the shingle of our bay seemed like the whispers of a dream, my grandda told me stories of the ocean's dead. I was little and never doubted the answers to the questions I asked. We lived at the far side of Cobh, seaward from the quay and the lofty dun cathedral that loomed above it, close to where the water met the shore. Cobh is at the head of Cork Harbor. A dark place, Cobh." Medical student Una Moss has lived with her grandda, Rawney, in the South of Ireland since her mother and father were killed in a car accident when she was a young girl. Una sometimes senses that things in her family are not what they seem, and gradually learns generations of political secrets from which she has been sheltered all her life. Unsure of herself and inexperienced in love, Una meets a charming draughtsman, Aidan Ferrell. Aidan very patiently courts Una through her fears of intimacy and trust. At first hesitantly - and then blindly - falling for this man from the North, she begins to sense that he may also be harboring secrets of his past.

    19TH-CENTURY AMERICAN LANDSCAPE PAINTING
The Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Painting Set contains slides of the paintings from the permanent collection of the Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza. The Baron began to acquire nineteenth-century American art in the 1960's and he is the first European collector to display such an intense interest in the period. His acquisitions in this area have been determined by the purely aesthetic value of these paintings as well as by his continued interest in American culture. The works document American landscape painting from the Hudson River school of the 1820's to the final years of the nineteenth century. Paintings by Cole, Church, Durand, Moran, and Homer were among those chosen for the set. Ninety-three details complement the thirty-seven full views to make up this set of 130 slides.
This set of 130 slides sells for $325.00. You may buy the entire set or individual slides from the set.

    Chapter One
Here's a fair one: Born blind. Give that beauty half a moment, see where it takes you. If it isn't near to tears, if you reckon it's just a tragic turn that sometimes happens to somebody else's kid, if you don't damn it as a scabby betrayal of life's promise, then I've grave doubts you deserve the air you're breathing. Give it another moment. Imagine, if you're able, that you've been struck blind this very instant. Shocking, yeah? You're feeling really sorry for yourself. But you've had your go, haven't you? You are not facing a total blank. You possess images of everyone and everything you ever cared for. You can put together a nice mental video, play it forward or backward just as you please, even freeze-frame the best bits. That should help you keep your grip on the world and where you once stood in it, where you might still stand. Blind from birth? Could you ever be truly sure you were anywhere real at all? Or would you feel you were wandering in Dreamtime-as the Aboriginals who haven't gone urban still conceive-yet with none of the ancient abo prehension to compass you through it? Not that any of us fully understand this Dreamtime. It's only a word. Some people here like to drop it casually into cocktail chatter, as if that proves they've some spiritual depth within their Prada-sheathed, tennis-toned bodies. Quite a rant I suppose, from a perfect stranger. It's shame, actually. Of the bitterest sort. A long time back in a place I never should have gone I saw a blind baby naked and crawling loose and aimless on the beaten earth floor of a hut. And

Thomas Moran piles on the irony in his latest novel
    By BARBARA LISS
    WHAT HARRY SAW.
    By Thomas Moran.
Riverhead Books, $25.95. 304 pp. IT takes the reader no time at all to realize that the title of Thomas Moran's fourth novel is completely ironic. Harry Hull, the Australian narrator of What Harry Saw , never looked carefully at anything, and now, "on the wrong side of forty," it is too late for him to undo the damage his willful blindness caused. In the first chapter Harry says what these damaging things are, but only at the end of this sometimes affecting, sometimes annoying story can we understand how they fit together to form a regret-filled, lonely life. Harry is a man who knows zip about relationships. Once or twice he says he can remember feeling "on the verge of understanding" how things shift and change between people. But he never reaches enlightenment. "Lives aren't scripted," he argues. "It all just happens."

Painter, Etcher, Illustrator, Engraver, Lithographer I have always held that the grandest, most beautiful,
or wonderful in nature, would, in capable hands,
make the grandest, most beautiful pictures.
    Thomas Moran
was born at Bolton in Lancashire, England in 1837, the son of a hand-loom weaver. His family, including brothers Edward and Peter, emigrated to the United States in 1844. He grew up in Philadelphia where he was apprenticed to a wood engraver, sketching designs on the blocks. His older brother, Edward, who was an established landscape painter, provided Thomas with his first art lessons. Thomas worked initially with watercolor but soon turned to oil. He exhibited his first oil in 1858 and made his first sketching trip westward in 1860, to Lake Superior. He continued his studies with local artist James Hamilton but in 1861-62 he returned to England with brother Edward where they fell under the influence of J.M.W. Turner while copying his works. Moran went to Europe again in 1866-67, meeting another influence, Corot, and making studies of Venice. In 1871, Thomas found the subject matter for the rest of his life when he made his first trip to the West with F.V. Hayden's Yellowstone surveying expedition. He was to work in Yosemite the following year where additional visual impressions became the backdrop for many of his future works.
