In this instance, the vines and leaves that adorn the front edge are naturalistic, while the stencilled embellishment of the cove is stylized. Such frames are unusual and were made for only a short period of time. The frame on Asher B. Durand's painting (see next page) is slightly later in date and eschews almost all natural forms in favor of entirely stylized ornamentation.

How can you tell that sometime very soon it will rain on the farmer's fields? The dark clouds, eerie light, and blowing wind might send some people running for cover. But this storm doesn't frighten anyone-the farmer continues to plow the field, and the cattle keep eating the grass in the pasture. The farm houses look warm and safe among the trees, and the smoke from their chimneys mixes with the clouds in the sky. The artist wanted to show that people and nature could live together peacefully-the farmer respects nature as he grows his crops, and nature provides rain and sun to assist him. What are some ways that farmers can use their land wisely? How could farmers mistreat the land? If people respect nature, the cycle of life will continue without problems. Mr. Inness shows symbols of this cycle in The Coming Storm.

Gift of Dr. Joseph Riggio In contrast with Inness's Delaware Valley , this work painted more than thirty years later exemplifies the impact of the artist's spiritual beliefs on his later paintings. The descriptive nature of the Hudson River and Barbizon schools is gone, as is the tight brushwork of earlier works. Yet Inness retained two aspects of those schools throughout his career that are evident herea belief in both the primacy of landscape and nature's containment of moral truths. Of greatest impact on Inness's spiritual interests were the philosophies of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). Inness became interested in the writings of the Swedish scientist and theologian through his friendship with American artist William Page (1811-1885), which began in 1863 in New Jersey. Swedenborg's interest in the connection of the spiritual and material worlds appealed to Inness, who wished to merge his interest in the supernatural with the sensate world to which he was naturally attuned as an artist. Inness was particularly intrigued by Swedenborg's Doctrine of Correspondences , which entailed the belief that, although the spiritual and temporal worlds were fundamentally different, they resembled one another in appearances. All created things, Swedenborg believed, had a corresponding spiritual reality. Inness embraced this theory, and his works after 1880 became more broadly painted and ambiguous in line and form in order to evoke the otherworldliness of objects represented. This stylistic attempt at unifying the material and immaterial peaked during the last years of his life, from about 1890 until his death in 1894.

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William Edwards George Inness was born near Newburgh, New York, in the mid-Hudson River Valley but was raised in New York City. In the 1840s he began his art career as an apprenticed engraver and by 1843 was studying with Regis Francois Gignoux (1816-1882). He made his first trip to Italy and France between 1850 and 1852. During a second trip to France in the mid-1850s Inness became greatly affected by the paintings of the Barbizon School, particularly those of Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867). The same year Delaware Valley was painted, Inness moved from the city to the village of Medfield, Massachusetts. That year also marked the beginning of his critical acceptance; having suffcient confidence as an artist, he was able to remove himself from a dependency on Barbizon motifs. In 1860 one of his landscapes was admired for not being "one of those striking, picturesque works, where mountains, waterfalls, cliffs, and other romantic objects take the fancy by a coup d'etat ."

His family moved to Newark, New Jersey when he was about 4 years of age. In his teens Inness worked as a map engraver, and sketched scenes from nature on the side. He attracted attention and studied with Regis Gignoux in New York City . In his early 20s a patron Ogden Haggerty sponsored him to spend over a year in Italy and a year in France before returning to the States.
