Picture of the Month February 2000 Dante and Beatrice 1883 by Henry Holiday (1839 - 1927) Henry Holiday was a painter as well as an established stained glass artist who had commissions both in England(Trinity College Cambridge, Birkenhead New Ferry Liverpool, St.James's Church, Kirkby Church and Huyton Church in Liverpool) and America (amongst others the Holy Trinity Church in Manhattan New York). He was also an illustrator, his most important illustrations being the ones he made for Lewis Carroll's book The Hunting of the Snark . Holiday was the youngest student of painting at the Royal Academy Schools in 1855. Like many of the young artists of his time Holiday was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite painters. Early in his career he was praised by the painter Millais (1829-1898) and was in contact with artists such as Holman Hunt Edwar d Burne Jones (1833-1898) and D.G. Rossetti (1828-1882). Holiday also knew the critic John Ruskin who encouraged the young painter.

We ramble through a beautifull landscape along road number 1 south from the Kaldbakur. The south side of the road consists of a giant grey sand area that is formed by lots of glacier rivers, but the north side is green on most of the places. Landscape along road number 1 south of Kaldbukur In the Skaftafell National Park we visit the 20 meters hight Svartifoss waterfall that is especially known for its beautifull basalt formations. The Skaftafell Park has a rich flora with birch trees. Henry in the Suzuki Jimny - Skeidarárjökull - The Svartifoss Waterfall After we have visited the Svinafelljökull glacier and made a trip to the 140 meters high Stigafoss waterfall, we go on to the Jökulsarlon. This 130 meters deep glacier lake with a lot of ice floes is really magnificent. The ice bergs originate from the Breidamerjökull. The Stigafoss waterfall - The glacier lake Jökulsarlon Some further along road 1, we find a nice place behind a hillock to put the tent. By night, we have a beautifull view over the Atlantic Ocean from this hill. The next day, we go on along the coast past Höfn.

The author uses this situation to make a number of observations about the group dynamics ( the fact that they do not know each other well enough to embark on such a trip, and the fact that they are continually unsure about what to do with their time). Well, the holiday season is almost upon us, and I bet you're all frantically rushing around shopping, baking, making arrangements to ensure Auntie Nellie and Grandma aren't in the same room for more than five minutes because you remember what happened last year don't you, writing cards, receiving cards, fuming that you haven't got a card from cousin Bert again , buying turkeys, stuffing turkeys, buying another turkey because the alsatian got the last one and all the other many and various delightful preparations for the Christmas season. So you'll all be rushed off your feet for the next week or so. But what after then? OK, you'll go and visit the relatives on Boxing Day, but then there's the long slow haul to New Year; almost a whole week of quietude before it's time to go to a party, get drunk, make a pass at someone wildly unsuitable, have your face slapped, and stagger home filled with ethyl alcohol and the promise of a bright new 1998. So, you have a few days between the 26th and the 31st December to put your feet up. And what better to put your feet up with than a good book? Well, that's what the boss tells me anyway. Personally, I'd have said his favourite leisure-time activity would be putting his feet up with a good beer, or possibly a good blonde, but I promised him I wouldn't cast aspersions on his sobriety again so forget I said that. So, what can I do in the literary line for you all? Books on-line? Hmm. OK for our American cousins with their unlimited free local 'phone calls, but browsing a whole book on-line costs too much for us Brits (although a citizen of the web, I consider myself, in some strange way, British). So, if not books then what? I talked this over with the boss, who's a bit of a literary cove in his spare time (although you wouldn't believe it from his prose style). We finally decided I should go and look for sites relating to some of his favourite authors. 'That way, Henry,' he slurred, beer fumes wafting across the keyboard (No! Bad Henry!

On display at Patrick Henry College will be 43 pieces of art commissioned by 11 presidents, including art from presidents Eisenhower through Clinton, chosen by the first family for their Christmas cards. The collection also features limited edition lithographs that were presented to foreign dignitaries, personal friends, and senior White House staff members. Similar art is held by the Smithsonian Museum, the White House Historical Society, presidential birthplace museums and presidential libraries, Eno said. "We appreciate supporters like David Eno," said Mike Farris, president of Patrick Henry College. "It is our hope that community members will visit us December 17 and view this unique local collection of art commissioned chiefly by the presidents of the second half of the 20th Century." Eno collected the pieces while employed by the State of New York in Albany, and while working on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. During his remarkable career, Eno has been the Majority Press Secretary for the New York Speaker of the Assembly, Perry B. Duryea; the press secretary for New York Lt. Gov. Mary Anne Krupsak; and a senior aide to New York's State Sen. Edwin Mason. He lead Krupsak's team to save Radio City Music Hall from the wrecking ball, and was involved in the early planning of the famous "I Love New York" tourism campaign. On Capitol Hill, Eno was senior aide and press secretary for Senators Roger Jepsen (R-IA) and James Abdnor (R -SD). He was also on the professional staff of Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman (R-NY), now the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee.
