ARSHILE GORKY by Mario Cutajar Manny Silverman Gallery , West Hollywood) One of the pleasures to be derived from this intimate show of Gorky drawings is to be reacquainted with the tremulous tentativeness that abstract expressionism introduced into drawing and painting in the post-World War II years. Gorky's stature as one of the key progenitors of this style is established, and clearly it was a style whose coincidence with the dominance of Parisian existentialism in intellectual circles reflected the shattering of cultural and moral certainties caused by this cataclysmic war, and the genocidal atrocities associated with it. Contemporary critics quickly capitalized on this connection: agony, anxiety, "authenticity" were the qualities most in demand in the art of the time, and, one might add, in the lives of the artists. Sixteen drawings are on display. About three-quarters of these are from the mid-thirties, and these testify to the enormous, almost stifling influence which Picasso's synthetic cubism exerted on Gorky's generation of European and American artists. To say that some of these drawings are reminiscent of Henry Moore is just another way of saying that in the thirties nobody could get away from Picasso, but also, and this is important in Gorky's case, that there is an inherent preoccupation with the paradoxical rendering of volume in all cubist-derived drawing and painting. A good portion of these cubist drawings are related to Gorky's no-longer-extant Newark airport mural.

These works are characterized by calligraphic line, related hues juxtaposed with one another, and biomorphic forms influenced by surrealism. The years in which his art was ascending to its greatest heights were also the darkest in his life. His marriage was disintegrating; he was operated on for colon cancer, and he lost many works in a studio fire. When he then discovered that his wife had cheated on him with another artist - the Chilean painter Matta who was an influence on his best work - the humiliation was too much to bear and he hanged himself. Drawing with a careful, classic simplicity, he transformed the woman's dark beauty into the perfect features of an Eastern Orthodox icon. "The eyes of the Armenian speak before the lips move and long after they cease to,"Arshile Gorky once wrote. Although of noble lineage, Gorky's mother, Lady Shushanik and her family were peasants exposed to severe hardship, including poverty and Turkish persecution and massacre. Gorky belongs at the same time both to surrealism and to abstract expressionism, whose the founder he is considered ( «Liver and Crest of the Cock» , Buffalo; «Water of the Blooming Mill» , 1944, New York). One of his best late oilpaintings is the «Landscape Table» (1945, Paris). In his last works the forms become more rough ( «Agony» , 1947, New York); it as if corresponds to disasters befallen his: in 1946 fire in his studio destroyed 27 oilpaintings, and next year he fell dangerously ill. Past Masters GORKY ARSHILE One of the most famous contemporary artists, the founder of Abstract Surrealism, Gorky was described by Andre Breton as the most important painter in American history. Gorky was born Vostanik-Manouk Adoyan in an Armenian village of Khorgom on the banks of lake Van. In 1915 he arrived in Yerevan with thousands of others refugees and there his mother died of hunger. In 1920 he and his sister Vartuhi went to USA. His whole life in the new country consisted of hard work and bitter struggle. Gorky made a thorough study of art of the ancient people including the Armenians. He passed through all the stages in modern art until his efforts crystallized in his own personal style. The artist's work, particularly that of his last, crowning period, was totally inspired by reminiscences. His memories of the making of butter in the village gave rise to a series of colourful pictures known as "Gardens in Sochi" (originally known as "Gardens in Khorgum" while his childhood formed the background to the pictures "Water of flowery mill", "Mothers' Apron", "Smell the apricots" and "Agony" Taking his artistic language to its limits and hiding in plants, flowers, a plough and peasant attire the deep meaning of life, Gorky achieved a superb harmony of idea and feeling. His work was a disturbing poem of great love and nostalgia, the restospective of his work in the Guggenheim Museum in 1984 was quite rightly described as
