Cruise Summary:
The M/S Paul Gauguin is one of our favorite ships. There is a relaxed, refined, nautical elegance throughout. There is nothing flashy. The dress is very casual during the day and "smart casual" at night. You dine when and where you want. There will be a maximum of 320 guests about. The service and food are excellent.
You will cruise in luxury and style in French Polynesia, with port stops at 5 idyllic islands. The M/S Paul Gauguin is a French-built luxury liner. The owners of the ship joined forces with Radisson Seven Seas Cruises to develop their vision of a luxury vessel designed to sail in French Polynesia on a year-round basis.
The Paul Gauguin has six-star standards of service and comfort. The ship features spacious staterooms (50% with private balconies), a state-of-the-art marina, single seating dining (dine when and where you choose), an extensive spa, fitness center, and much more. We recommend cabins with private teak verandas.

Arts Artists' profiles ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Other artists Paul Gauguin by Lara Grieve Gauguin came to painting later in life. He was born in Paris in 1848 but lived with his mother in Peru (1851-55). On returning to France, aged 17, he became a sailor, travelling to Valparaiso and Rio de Janeiro. Later, in 1871, he settled down and entered the firm of a Paris stockbroker. His colleague, Émile Schuffenecker, encouraged him to paint on Sundays and these weekly excursions were the turning point in Gauguin’s life. Gauguin met Pissarro in 1875 and the older painter influenced the younger artist’s use of colour. Initially Gauguin’s work was close to the Impressionists in subject matter and colour scheme. He exhibited with the group five times and was one of the first collectors of Impressionism, but he was never truly an Impressionist. Gauguin wrote, in 1885, that he hoped to achieve “the translation of a thought into a medium other than literature.” By 1886 his technique was beginning to change. At the last Impressionist group exhibition (1886) he had moved away from depicting the reality of the external world. He had abandoned small, visible brush marks in favour of large areas of flat colour and introduced an innovative colour scheme that suggested a sense of heightened reality. Gauguin called this technique Synthetism and declared that he hoped painting would return to exploring the “interior life of human beings”. This aim shows a similarity with Van Gogh, whom he joined for a short period at Arles in 1888, but where Gauguin insisted that true creativity derived from internal vision and imagination, Van Gogh insisted on grounding his creativity in close observation of nature.

Gauguin, (Eugène-Henri-) Paul
(b. June 7, 1848, Paris, Fr.d. May 8, 1903, Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. His masterpieces include the early Vision After the Sermon (1888) and Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?
Encyclopaedia Britannica
Photographs by Mark Harden Although his main achievements were to lie elsewhere, Gauguin was, to use a fanciful metaphor, nursed in the bosom of Impressionism . His attitudes to art were deeply influenced by his experience of its first exhibition, and he himself participated in those of 1880, 1881 and 1882. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian Creole, whose mother had been a writer and a follower of Saint-Simon, he was brought up in Lima, joined the merchant navy in 1865, and in 1872 began a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris. In 1874 he saw the first Impressionist exhibition, which completely entranced him and confirmed his desire to become a painter. He spent some 17,000 francs on works by

Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848, into a liberal middle-class family. After an adventurous early life, including a four-year stay in Peru with his family and a stint in the French merchant marine, he became a successful Parisian stockbroker, settling into a comfortable bourgeois existence with his wife and five children.
He found his inspiration in the art of indigenous peoples, in medieval stained glass, and in Japanese prints; he was introduced to Japanese prints by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh when they spent two months together in Arles, in the south of France, in 1888. Gauguin's new style was characterized by the use of large flat areas of nonnaturalistic color, as in Yellow Christ (1889, Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York).
Under the influence of the tropical setting and Polynesian culture, however, Gauguin's paintings became more powerful, while the subject matter became more distinctive, the scale larger, and the compositions more simplified. His subjects ranged from scenes of ordinary life, such as Tahitian Women Spirit of the Deadwatching (1892, Albright-Knox Art Gallery). His masterpiece was the monumental allegory Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), which he painted shortly before his failed suicide attempt. A modest stipend from a Parisian art dealer sustained him until his death at Atuana in Marquesas on May 9, 1903.

Paul Eugène Henri Gauguin, (1848-1903),
French Post-Impressionist painter, known for his use of lush colour and flat, two-dimensional forms, particularly in scenes from life in Brittany and the South Sea Islands.
In 1874, after meeting the artist Camille Pissarro and viewing the first Impressionist exhibition, he became a collector and amateur painter. He exhibited with the Impressionists in 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, and 1886. In 1883 he gave up his secure existence to devote himself to painting; his wife and children, without adequate subsistence, were forced to return to her family. From 1886 to 1891 Gauguin lived mainly in rural Brittany (except for a trip to Panama and Martinique from 1887 to 1888), where he was the centre of a small group of experimental painters known as the School of Pont-Aven. Under the influence of the painter Émile Bernard, Gauguin turned away from Impressionism and adopted a less naturalistic style, which he called Synthetism. He found his inspiration in the art of indigenous peoples, in medieval stained glass, and in Japanese prints; he was introduced to Japanese prints by

This group of paintings, which arrived in Moscow at the turn of the century, imported by two well-known collectors, Ivan Morozov and Sergei Schukin, had a striking effect upon the creative imagination of some of the leading figures of Russian avant-garde painting - from Kandinsky to Larionov to Goncarova - so much so, that in a certain phase of their work one may discover profound, clear signs of that particular cultural experience. Without the knowledge of this page in the history of modern art collecting, it would be difficult, if not, indeed, impossible, to understand the nature of such influences. These included a six-year stay in Lima, Peru, from the age of one to seven, and two voyages to South America as an apprentice and second mate on various merchant ships, between the ages of seventeen and twenty. Gauguin's response to these exotic stimuli was, however, very slow, for it was not until the winter of 1886-87 that he began making ceramic pieces. clearly inspired by American pre-Columbian pottery. Like his masters, the Peruvian and Mexican Indians, who never had the potter's wheel, he simply kneaded big chunks of clay into vessels of strange, fantastic forms with his bare hands - which was quite a revolutionary method at the time in Europe, where all potters without question continued to turn out vases of the classical, cylindrical, symmetrical form, distinguishable only through the decoration applied to them.
