I don't like this painting by Sidney Meteyard much. It is a nice painting, but it's not very true to the story at all, as I see it. This Elaine just looks too old and comfortable. Painted by Edward Reginald Frampton, this is one of my favorite pictures to the story. I think it shows Elaine like she appears in the story. She has fair hair, pale skin and is dressed in white, all of which goes well with her nicknames (Elaine the fair, the Lily Maid etc). She also looks very young, and extremely fragile. She looks like a young, inexperienced girl who could actually die from a broken heart. The use of colors can also be interpreted: Elaine's white clothes represent pureness, chastity but also death. And the red cloth in the background is symbolic of love and strong passions, but red can symbolize death as well. John William Waterhouse painted several pictures of Elaine. This Elaine looks much more mature than Frampton's Elaine. She also looks more willfull and confident, and her dress is red which is a very lively color. She is more a woman than a girl. This interpretation is also possible from the story. A comparison of Frampton's Elaine with this Elaine is very interesting, as it gives us two very different views on who she really was. Like the Waterhouse painting above, this Elaine also looks more willfull than Frampton's Elaine. But this one looks younger. She is also dressed in white, which as mentioned above suits the story. In the background we see the cracked mirror, like in Tennyson's poem. She seems to be getting up (or sitting down), supporting herself on the rail of the chair, in horror from what has just happened.

Andererseits kann er nicht einmal einem Feigenbaum verzeihen, daß er keine Früchte trägt, weil es nicht die Jahreszeit dafür ist. So haben gerade die sogenannten guten Menschen Jesus, Mahavir, Konfuzius, Krishna, Rama und Buddha Eure Persönlichkeit wird von den sogenannten guten Mensch geformt. Sicherlich, sie hatten ein paar gute Eigenschaften, aber unmittelbar nebenan war eine Kluft, und die kam aus der Idee, der Perfektion. Ich möchte nicht, daß ihr vollkommen seid. Ich möchte euch so vollkommen unvollkommen wie möglich. Freut euch über eure Unvollkommenheit. Freut euch gerade über eure Gewöhnlichkeit! Hütet euch vor sogenannten "Heiligen Vätern", es sind alles nur scheinheilige Väter. Wenn ihr auf große Worte wie "Seine Heiligkeit" steht, dann nehmt den Titel "Seine Reine Gewöhnlichkeit" an, S.R.G., nicht S.H. Ich predige Gewöhnlichkeit. Ich erhebe keinen Anspruch auf Wunder, ich bin ein einfacher Mensch. Und ich möchte, daß auch ihr einfach werdet, so daß ihr diese beiden Extreme los seid: das Extrem der Schuld und das Extrem der Heuchelei. Genau in der Mitte liegt das Gesunde.
