DURER, ALBRECHT Hercules and the Stymphalian Birds Durer was born in Nuremberg Germany in 1471. His father, a goldsmith, would be the first art teacher to his son. After studying with his father, Durer would next study with a local master learning the trade of engraving woodcuts for various illustrations. At that time Nuremberg and southern Germany was a center for publishing. Woodcuts and engravings were used in creating illustrations for the documents published there. 16th century German art was in part influenced by the Gothic style of the Middle Ages and by the current religious movement: the Reformation and the teachings of Martin Luther. During his lifetime Durer, like the later Rembrandt, would paint a number of self portraits. This, also like Rembrandt, showed his lifelong curiosity with self exploration and with his role as an artist.

Here I really am somebody, whereas at home I am just a hack," lamented Albrecht Dürer about Germany's medieval conception of artists. Italian Renaissance ideas first came north in a powerful way through Dürer, who trained in Nuremberg as a goldsmith, painter, and woodcutter. After visiting Venice in 1495, Dürer intensely studied mathematics, geometry, Latin, and humanist literature. He expressed himself primarily through prints; painting was less profitable, and Lutheran church reformers disdained most religious artworks. Durer's Polyhedra Albrecht Durer, the remarkable German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung, available in English translation as Painter's Manual . It was one of the first books to teach the methods of perspective, and was highly regarded throughout the sixteenth century. Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists. Who he learned from is not known, but Luca Pacioli is a likely possibility. Some of the techniques and illustrations follow very closely the work of Piero della Francesca Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist 's attention. More importantly, this book presents the earliest known examples of polyhedral nets , i.e., polyheda unfolded to lie flat for printing. The image at right is Durer's drawing of the net of an icosahedron . While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.

Living in Nuremberg, half-way between the Netherlands and Italy, he found inspiration in the work of painters of both the major European artistic centres of his time. But rather than simply imitating what others were doing, Duerer was very much an innovator. He is, for example, the first artist who is known to have painted a self-portrait and to have done a landscape painting of a specific scene. "The range and versatility of Duerer's work is astonishing. His woodcuts and engravings made him famous across Europe and he is still considered to be the greatest printmaker of all time. As an oil painter, Duerer was equally successful at religious and secular subjects, producing magnificent altarpieces and powerful portraits. His drawings and watercolours are impressive for their diversity of subject-matter and the varied media in which they were produced. Duerer was to have a major influence on the development of European art. "More of Duerer's writings survive than those of any other early Northern artist. In the diary he kept of his 1520-1 visit to the Netherlands, he records seeing the works of the early Flemish painters, meeting the leading artists of his day, sketching the philosopher Erasmus, worrying about Luther's fate, and attending the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor. Duerer also enjoyed the pleasures of being a tourist and his intense curiosity about the marvels he encounters is evident in his diary. He writes about seeing the bones of an 18 foot-high giant from Antwerp who had 'done wondrous great feats' and describes a great bed in Brussels 'wherein 50 men can lie'. He later sets off in mid-winter in search of a beached whale in Zeeland, explaining that the people there were worried about 'the great stink, for it is so large that they say it could not be cut into pieces and the blubber boiled down in half a year.'
