Asher Brown Durand An accomplished artist and engraver in New York City, a member of the so-called Hudson River school of landscape painting, Asher B Durand painted nature, US Presidents, and historical scenes. He was a close friend of fellow artist Thomas Cole and poet William Cullen Bryant (pictured in Kindred Spirits below). Most of the following works of his were scanned from two books I picked up on a recent visit (Apr 2001) to the NY Historical Society, where most of these works may be found. His engraving of John Trumbull's The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 hangs in the Yale University Art Gallery. Intimate Friends: Thomas Cole, Asher B. Smith Fund The most innovative American frames from the 1860s are characterized by ornament applied in symmetrical and refined combinations. On this exquisite frame, the exuberance of the stylized floral cove is balanced by delicate beaded and reeded moldings. The pattern in the cove was achieved by applying fine sand over a design stencilled with glue. The four buds in the cove corners and the intricate floral embellishment on the outer corners indicate a superior level of attention to detail.

Durand (1796-1886) An Old Man's Reminiscences Oil on canvas, 1845 AIHA Collection: Gift of the Gallery of Fine Arts An Old Man's Reminiscences is a tapestry of nostalgic, idealistic memories painted during the height of the industrialization of America. From the shelter of the woods, an old man gazes out upon scenes that were typical of rural agrarian life in the Northeast in the first half of the 19th century. Children are playing hoop and other games in fields near the schoolhouse. Cattle graze near the bank of the stream and farmers are haying. Two men fish in the stream, and a young couple sit under a tree. Durand and Thomas Cole were close friends, and they often hiked and sketched together in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. Upon Cole's death in 1848, Durand became the acknowledged leader of the Hudson River School and was an active member of the artistic community throughout his career.
