Last updated March 21, 2003 The Sherlock Holmes Society of London Biography Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was institutionalised. He died in an asylum in 1893. Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools and later studied at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Creativity was apparent in Doyle's ancestry: his grandfather was a famous caricaturist and his uncle was a well-known illustrator. Doyle's father was an architect, designer and book illustrator. Doyle himself was an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and Emile Gaboriau. In developing his own literary character, Doyle based Sherlock Holmes on

Arthur Conan Doyle Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary (Foley) Doyle. In addition to his primary job as a civil servant, the elder Doyle painted, drew book illustrations and worked as a sketch artist on criminal trials. He suffered from epilepsy, was hospitalized, and died in 1893. Arthur's mother took a great interest in literature, and she infulenced Doyle to read widely. At the age of fourteen he had learned French so well that he read Jules Verne's stories in the author's original language. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics, and young Arthur was educated by Jesuits, who had a great influence on his intellectual development. Doyle's teacher in the University of Edinburgh, Joseph Bell, was a master of observation and deduction who served as inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle also used his friends and teachers from Stonyhurst College as models for his characters in the Holmes stories, among them two boys named Moriarty. After graduating from Edinburgh University, in 1884, he married Louise Hawkins. Doyle qualified as doctor, in 1885, and practiced medicine as an eye specialist at Southsea, near Porsmouth, in Hampshire until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Doyle however felt that Holmes took away too much of his time and that the public did not pay enough attention to his other literary works. Conan Doyle was a brilliant yet complex man. In his later years, his unwavering belief in Spiritualism was a source of strenght despite some public ridicule. It is befitting such a man to have so many references on the Web. Urgent Appeal For E-Mailed Letters Of Objection

Edinburgh Council's Planning Committee Gives Six Month Reprieve
I received the following from Councillor Bob Cairns. Doyle's old childhood residence has a six month reprieve. My thanks to everyone who may have written, Graham Connor for bringing it to our attention in the first place and Edinburgh Council's Planning Committee for taking this stance.. "You will be pleased to hear that the City of Edinburgh Council's Planning Committee has agreed to serve a Building Preservation Notice on this property. This means that the building is protected against demolition for six months, during which period Historic Scotland (a Government agency) has to decide whether to add the building to the statutory list of buildings of architectural or historic interest. You will be aware that the building was taken off the list in 1997. I would like to stress that the City council objected to the removal of the building at the time. If it is listed, there is a very strong reason to refuse consent for the restaurant. The planning application by McDonalds will not be considered until Historic Scotland make their decision. I very much hope that the building is relisted and that those who object to the demolition can now come up with some alternative proposal for the building." Councillor Bob Cairns The rest of this page details the house and the problem though email objections are no longer required.

Dr. Kittle and Dr. Doyle—
Kinsmen Through Medicine
and Belle Letters
By Robert Cotner Caxtonian March 1997 here is a kinship between Caxtonian Fred Kittle and English litterateur, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that transcends the usual relationship of collector and the one collected. It is safe to say that few know Dr. Doyle as Dr. Kittle does. Both were trained as physicians, both cultivated broad interests from their earliest years, and both surrounded themselves with the legacies of literary and artistic accomplishment. Kittle's Doyle collection began in the mid-1950s, when he acquired the original manuscript of Doyle's, The Romance of Medicine , a 19-page, handwritten medical lecture that Doyle gave on October 3, 1910, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. Kittle himself is currently working on his own manuscript of a book that will delineate all of the particulars about The Romance of Medicine and that will include in its context a reprinting of Doyle's own hand-written text. The study will be published by the Arthur Conan Doyle Society this spring. Between the acquisition of his first manuscript and his most recent, Kittle has become, while assembling what is recognized as one of the world's finest Doyle collections, a late-20th-Century comrade of Doyle, a scholar in his own right on the life, times, and work of the world's greatest detective-writer and his family.

    Watercolourist and illustrator. He was the second son of the caricaturist John Doyle and elder brother to Charles Altamont Doyle. He showed remarkable imaginative skill as a draughtsman and from the age of nineteen became a regular contributor to Punch, designing the original cover and remaining on the staff until 1850. In 1851 Doyle illustrated Ruskin's The King of the Golden River. His fairy subjects alternate with themes from everyday life. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1866 and 1871) and a collection of his drawings was shown at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1881. He died two years later of apoplexy.

    The Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle M y English class has been doing reports on artists and authors of the 18th and 19th century this past month, and I did Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The reports are done now and I've been thinking about what I could do with the knowledge I've gained, and with the free web page I signed up for. I decided(surprise) to make a web page about his life. There's quite a few of them already, but I thought I could add a little, or at least feel like I did. I got most of my information from Encarta95(I know it's old, but it was cheap), but some came from several outdated books written in the 50's from my school library. I am going to divide it into two parts, His Life, and His Literary Career. Well, here goes. It really is pretty funny. Honest. This page was last modified June 16, 1998. That's 6-16-98 to those of us with digital watches.

    Biography
    Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Ediburgh, Scotland. He was born Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle Charles Altamont Doyle, Arthur's father, was a chronic alcoholic. He was the only member of his family, who apart from fathering a brilliant son, never did anything of note. Charles had married Mary Foley, a vivacious and very well educated young woman of seventeen. She was a great story-teller, which is how Arthur Conan Doyle became the writer we know him to be. By the time he was nine, Doyle's wealthier relatives paid for him to go to a Jesuit boarding school in England. He graduated at the age of seventeen. Doyle was a Scottish physician and writer. He was certified in 1885 and became an eye specialist. Doyle married Louisa Hawkins in 1885. Doyle married Jean Leckie in 1907. Doyle wanted to join the army during the Boer War, but was not allowed, so he volunteered as a medical doctor. Doyle began Sherlock Holmes in 1887. During the following 40 years he published 56 short stories and four novels featuring Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson. Doyle died on July 7, 1930, in Crowborough, England, of a heart attack.

    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
    Can a writer be too successful? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle might have asked himself this question when his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, became more powerful than his creator. Like Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Conan Doyle could not control the force he'd unleashed upon the world. Readers believed in the fictional detective's existence so ardently that they wrote to him about real cases and mourned his sudden death a ploy by Conan Doyle to free himself for more lofty literary pursuits. But Holmes would not die; the public would not let him. Conan Doyle revived him for his reading public, but forbade mention of his name within earshot. He spent his last years marginalized and misunderstood while his famous creation grew ever more beloved.
    A Born Storyteller
    Born on May 22, 1859, to Mary and Charles Altamont Doyle, Conan Doyle was one of 10 children, seven of whom would survive into adulthood (and two of whom were given the compound surname Conan Doyle in honor of a paternal uncle). The youngest son of renowned caricaturist John Doyle, Charles was outshone by his brothers James, Henry, and Richard in professional achievement. While Charles worked as an Edinburgh civil servant, brother James was the author of The Chronicles of England;

    No fue el primero en hacerlo, pero sí el que más prestigio obtuvo al convertir a la figura del detective en un referente inevitable en la historia de la literatura. Lo suyo fue marcar un parteguas, una frontera que una vez traspasada no admitía regreso.
    Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle fue el segundo hijo de Charles Altamont y Mary Foley Doyle, un matrimonio católico que en total procreó 10 hijos. De tal modo, que Arthur Ignatius ingresara en un colegio jesuita de Lancashire al cumplir los 9 años y permaneciese ahí hasta los 16, resultaba un movimiento lógico e inevitable. Sin embargo, sus padres ignoraban que en lugar de afianzar la fe de su hijo, el colegio la debilitaría enormemente. Antes de ingresar a la universidad, Arthur realizó durante un año estudios en la localidad de Feldkirch, en Austria, tras lo cual regresó a su natal Edinburgo.
    Un huésped que su madre había alojado en su casa, el Dr. Bryan Charles Waller, influyó notablemente en Arthur para que éste estudiase medicina. Así pues, Waller preparó al chico para el examen en la Escuela de Medicina de Edinburgo. Conan Doyle recibió los títulos de bachiller y maestría en cirugía en 1881; cuatro años más tarde habría de realizar un postgrado que sirvió de complemento a su tesis.
