Biography
Florentine painter and architect. Outstanding as a painter, sculptor, and architect, Giotto was recognized as the first genius of art in the Italian Renaissance. Giotto lived and worked at a time when people's minds and talents were first being freed from the shackles of medieval restraint. He dealt largely in the traditional religious subjects, but he gave these subjects an earthly, full-blooded life and force. The artist's full name was Giotto di Bondone. He was born about 1266 in the village of Vespignano, near Florence. His father was a small landed farmer. Giorgio Vasari, one of Giotto's first biographers, tells how Cimabue, a well-known Florentine painter, discovered Giotto's talents. Cimabue supposedly saw the 12-year-old boy sketching one of his father's sheep on a flat rock and was so impressed with his talent that he persuaded the father to let Giotto become his pupil. Another story is that Giotto, while apprenticed to a wool merchant in Florence, frequented Cimabue's studio so much that he was finally allowed to study painting. The earliest of Giotto's known works is a series of frescoes (paintings on fresh, still wet plaster) on the life of St. Francis in the church at Assisi. Each fresco depicts an incident; the human and animal figures are realistic and the scenes expressive of the gentle spirit of this patron saint of animals. In about 1305 and 1306 Giotto painted a notable series of 38 frescoes in the

The Art of Giotto
Photo Scala, Florence
For most people Giotto is the first name in European painting since antiquity. That he had breathed fresh life into painting was recognized by his contemporaries, and later by Ghiberti and Vasari. He had "that art which had been buried for centuries by the errors of some who painted more to please the eyes of the ignorant than the intellect of the wise," wrote Boccaccio (some ten years after the artist's death) in a tale of the Decameron, in which he stressed both the physical ugliness and lively wit of "the best painter in the world."
In his lifetime Giotto had raised painting to a prestigious level among the arts, to such a high level that it influenced sculpture rather than vice versa, as is demonstrated by the work of the great Andrea Pisano. Italian painting can be said to have changed more radically with the appearance of Giotto than ever before. The impulse that Giotto gave to the arts was so great that it determined the destiny of European painting. By the middle of the fourteenth century Europe had already become aware of Giotto's innovations, which accorded with the growing secular tendency in European society. His rediscovery of the third dimension, of real and measurable space, of the natural appearance of surfaces, of the individualizing aspects of reality - all this became the inheritance of European art. On the following pages an overview of Giotto's masterworks is presented. The overview covers the

Bio: Giotto
Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from
Giotto is considered to have been the most important Italian painter of the 14th century. His conception of the human figure in broad, rounded terms—rather than in the flat, two-dimensional terms of Gothic and Byzantine styles indicated a concern for naturalism that was a milestone in the development of Western art. He was born Giotto di Bondone in Colle di Vespignano, near Florence. Details of his early life are scarce, but he probably served an apprenticeship in Florence before embarking on a career that took him to Rome, Padua, Arezzo, Rimini, Assisi, and Naples. The Ognissanti Madonna (1310?, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence) is roughly contemporary with the Arena frescoes and is Giotto's only attributable panel painting. It shows the influence of the earlier Florentine painter Giovanni Cimabue in composition and style, but is unique in its humanization of the Madonna's face. Two fresco cycles in the Church of Santa Croce, Florence—depicting the life of Saint Francis and the lives of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist—are thought to be later works. While they are extensively restored, they represent the most advanced stage of Giotto's style, showing human figures grouped in free, active poses. The question of Giotto's authorship of the frescoes in the Upper Church at Assisi is an ongoing discussion among art historians. Giotto was ahead of his time. Most of his followers painted in a less significant, more overtly decorative style. It remained for Masaccio, a century later, to expand upon Giotto's monumental style. Giotto's example was crucial to the development of later Florentine painting, and his preoccupation with the realities of the human figure and the visible world became the dominant concerns of the Florentine Renaissance. He died in Florence, in 1337.

Over the archway of the choir is a scene of the Court of Heaven, and a Last Judgment scene faces it on the entrance wall. The compositions are simple, the backgrounds are subordinated, and the faces are studies in emotional expression.

Giotto di Bondone
Biography
Giotto, son of Bondone, was born in Colle di Vespignano, near Florence, in 1267. According to tradition, Giotto's talent was discovered by painter Cimabue, who saw him painting a sheep on a stone. Cimabue took him to his workshop in Florence, where Giotto spent his apprenticeship from 1280 to 1290. Abandoning the very rigid and symmetrical, Byzantine style, he created a much more realistic one of his own. Giotto started a competely new style, "translating the art of painting from Greek to Latin." Giotto's entire body of work constists of frescoes and altar pieces. Unfortunately, few survived the centuries. One of Giotto's best preserved masterpieces is the cycle illustrating the lives of the Virgin and Christ in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. Giotto, who was already famous for his work in Assisi and in Rome, worked in Padua together with his team from 1304 to about 1306. Their/His frescoes include an "Adoration of the Magi" (Adorazione dei Magi), which features a beautiful comet above the Nativity stable. Figure 1. Giotto's fresco showing Comet Halley

Giotto was the king of the proto-renaissance, he was the man who invented modern painting. He was a child prodigy and as the story goes he was discovered by his teacher while tending sheep and doodling realistic scenes on a rock. He was a keen entrepreneur and cornered the market on pigs' bristles and made fabulous brushes that made him rich. His two best known works are the frescoes in the church of St Francis in Assisi and the Arena Chapel in Padua. His figures show a awesome sense of place, a tangible three dimensionality, and express emotions. The Arena Chapel is one of the top five works n the western world.

Florentine painter and architect. Giotto is regarded as the founder of the central tradition of Western painting because his work broke free from the stylisations of Byzantine art, introducing new ideals of naturalism and creating a convincing sense of pictorial space. His momentous achievement was recognised by his contemporaries (Dante praised him in a famous passage of 'The Divine Comedy', where he said he had surpassed his master Cimabue), and in about 1400 Cennino Cennini wrote 'Giotto translated the art of painting from Greek to Latin'.

c. 1267 Artist Italy: Florence Architect, sculptor, and painter, Giotto is considered the first artistic genius of the Italian Renaissance and has been called its "father." Although he was not as technically adept as the great masters, his ability to capture human emotion inspired later artists and marked a significant change in the artistic style of the age.
