MAURICE DE VLAMINCK (1876-1958) The Haute Folie Portfolio The vigorus and richly colored original lithographs of Haute Folie by Maurice de Vlaminck illustrate charming French villages and surrounding country farmland. This collection of 48 unsigned color lithographs are not the work of the young Vlaminck who was known for his turbulant brushstoke and violent palette. Although the quivering Van Gogh-like black line is present throughout, the painterly prints of Haute Folie are characteristic of Vlaminck's later style. Created very near the end of his life, Haute Folie was likely Vlaminck's last creative project. Byl také profesionálním závodním cyklistou až do doby, kdy se v roce 1900 setkal s umìlcem André Derainem a zaèal se zabývat malováním. S Derainem pak bydlel ve studiu v Seine at Chatou, malém pøedmìstí Paøíže. Byl ovlivnìn expresivností Vincenta van Gogha a od roku 1907 se zaèal zajímat o díla Paula Cézanna. V roce 1905 se stal èlenem skupiny fauvistù. Spoleènì s Derainem, Henri Matissem a Georgesem Rouaultem pak vystavoval v paøížském Salónu. Svými narušenými formami a plochými vzory namalovanými hrubými barvami jejich práce vyvolaly obrovské vlny nesouhlasu kritikù. De Vlaminckùv pøístup k barvì a jednoduchým tvarùm fauvismu mu pomohl utvoøit jeho typický styl. Jeho prudké tahy štìtcem s modrou, oranžovou a rùžovou pozmìnily perspektivu tak, že vytvoøil vysoce expresivní a turbulentní bohaté scény pulsujícími energií. Vlaminck o tomto klíèovém období své tvorby pozdìji napsal: "Zesvìtlil jsem všechny tóny. Pøepsal jsem je do orchestrace barev a všech pocitù, kterých jsem si byl vìdom. Vlaminck, Maurice de T IMELINE Fauvism The painter Maurice de Vlaminck , b. Apr. 4, 1876, d. Oct. 11, 1958, was one of the original Fauves ("wild beasts"). The group of boldly colored and seemingly chaotic compositions that Vlaminck and his colleagues exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 ushered modern painting into the 20th century. Vlaminck's finest works employ jarring combinations of red, white, and blue with remarkable effectiveness. His Tugboat at Chatou (1906; private collection, New York City) exemplifies this effect. Vlaminck, who had almost no art training, openly despised the tradition of French masters and boasted that he had never been inside the Louvre. As a racing cyclist and lover of speed, he was fascinated by the rhythms and tempo of urban life. An accomplished violinist as well, Vlaminck supported himself with his music and began to paint seriously only after he and André Derain began working together in 1899. In 1901 he was filled with enthusiasm by the van Gogh retrospective in Paris and adopted the Dutch painter's energetic brushstrokes and brilliant palette. His most characteristic works stem from the following years. By 1908 he had begun to subdue his colors, and his compositions became more orderly.

Encyclopedia Vlaminck, Maurice de [m O r E u Pronunciation Key Vlaminck, Maurice de , French painter, writer, and printmaker. At first an avid racing cyclist, he supported himself (c. 1900) as a musician and taught himself to paint. Vlaminck early adopted the strident palette and twisted lines of Van Gogh. He rejected the intellectual approach of cubism , but became associated with fauvism , applying exuberant colors to the canvas directly from the paint tube. Vlaminck was one of the first artists to be influenced by African sculpture. He advanced from the fauvist style to paint strong, often grim landscapes (e.g., Village in the Snow, Philadelphia Mus. of Art). He repeated these so often that they lost much of their original power. Vlaminck also wrote several novels and books of reminiscences. See his autobiography tr. by M. Ross (1967); illustrated biographies by P. MacOrlan (1958) and J. Selz (1963). En buena medida fue un autodidacta que atacó los principios de la pintura académica hasta el punto de declarar que se sentía orgulloso de no haber pisado el Louvre.
