The Death of Marat click to enlarge Title : The Death of Marat Artist Jacques-Louis David Date Medium/Size : Oil on Canvas (65" x 50 1/2") Current Location Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique Points of Discussion: Jacques-Louis David painted this picture to commemorate the death of Jean-Paul Marat, one of the heroes of the French Revolution who was stabbed to death by Charlotte Corday, a young woman who hoped her violent actions would restore order to France. Rather than capture the moment of the assassination, David (a keen supporter of the French Revolution) chose instead to focus on the tragic figure of Marat. The painting shows Marat in the bathtub (where he was busy treating a skin rash) with a stab wound through the chest. On the floor at the lower left of the painting we see the murder weapon - a knife. Also in the picture, in Marat's left hand is the letter Corday used to enter his home. You will notice that the events in the painting are contained within the lower half of the piece. This concentrates the viewer's gaze on the most important aspect of the painting the dead man. David's goal was to portray Marat as a martyr, and he succeeded.

Jacques-Louis David studied drawing and the literary classics before being accepted into the Académie Royale at the young age of eighteen. After eight years of struggle, he finally won the coveted Prix de Rome . Visits to ruins, exposure to Neoclassical doctrines, and study of Nicolas Poussin's classicism encouraged him to adopt a style and subject matter derived from antiquity Returning in Paris in 1780, David soon prospered. Large canvases of classical themes brought him election to the Académie Royale in 1784 and sensational success at the Paris Salon in 1785. His firm linear contours, even lighting, pure colors, and frieze-like composition were admired, but more than his style was revolutionary. The paintings came to be regarded as a political manifesto for ending the corruption of an effete aristocracy and returning to the stern, patriotic morals attributed to republican Rome. "The Robespierre of the brush," David served in the

104 pages, 7 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches 26 color and 31 b/w illustrations, 1 color foldout ISBN 0-89236-236-7 paper, $19.95 "A complete, cohesive study ... in a direct and unpretentious style refreshingly free of academic cant." Library Journal Jacques-Louis David's brilliant painting of the young lovers Telemachus and Eucharis was created during the artist's last years, when the defeat of Napoleon and the return of the monarchy in France forced him into exile in Brussels. Several of David's paintings from this period show his preoccupation with the psychology of love, but none depicts the emotions of parting more tenderly than this painting from 1818. Dorothy Johnson discusses how David's political involvement affected his personal life and career, taking him from history painter to revolutionary living in exile. The effects of these experiences came together at the end of his life in the creation of some of his richest and most complex works. The author shows how David's relationship with his family and friends may have dictated his choice of themes. In addition, she details his influence on the modern French school of painting and provides an analysis of this work's innovative iconography.

David, Jacques-Louis David studied with Vien , and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times, causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the antique, nurtured by his time in Rome, directed the classical revival in French art. He borrowed classical forms and motifs, predominantly from sculpture, to illustrate a sense of virtue he mistakenly attributed to the ancient Romans. Consumed by a desire for perfection and by a passion for the political ideals of the French Revolution, David imposed a fierce discipline on the expression of sentiment in his work. This inhibition resulted in a distinct coldness and rationalism of approach. David's reputation was made by the Salon of 1784. In that year he produced his first masterwork, The Oath of the Horatii (Louvre). This work and his celebrated Death of Socrates (1787; Metropolitan Mus.) as well as Lictors Bringing to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons Marat (1793; Brussels), his iron control is softened and the tragic portraits are moving and dignified. The artist was imprisoned for a time at the end of the Reign of Terror.

JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID Painter David is famous for his huge, dramatic canvasses of Napoleon and other historical figures, including Oath of the Horatii Death of Marat (1793) and The Sabine Women (1799). Early in his career he was a leader in the neoclassical movement; later his subjects became more modern and political. David was himself active in the French Revolution as a supporter of Robespierre and is sometimes called the chief propagandist for the Revolution; after the Reign of Terror ended he was briefly imprisoned for his actions. When Napoleon took power David became his court painter and created several grand canvasses of the Emperor, including the heroic Napoleon Bonaparte Crossing the Alps (1801) and the enormous Coronation of Napoleon and Josephine (1807). David also painted Napoleon in His Study (1812), with its famous image of Napoleon with one hand tucked inside his vest. After Napoleon's ouster David went in exile to Brussels, where he remained until his 1825 death. The Artchive: Jacques-Louis David
