above: The Chase of the White Mice , c. 1864 (cat. 44) Oil on canvas 25.4 x 47.7 cm. unframed, 36 x 56.8 cm. Mrs. Nicolette Wernick IIIa. Perhaps the greatest Victorian fairy painter was Richard Dadd . He started his career as a landscape painter, but by the early 1840s was painting fairy compositions, modelling his figures on the Old Masters. By 1841 Dadd's reputation as a fairy painter was established. In 1843 he murdered his father and was confined in Bethlem Hospital lunatic asylum, later being transferred to Broadmoor. There he created a far more fantastic fairy world, a personal interpretation of the fairy King and Queen's quarrel over a changeling Indian boy and The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke , the subject of which is his invention entirely. The 'feller' cracks a hazelnut with a hammer watched intently by a motley cast of characters that includes a master magician and Queen Mab. Robert Huskisson's Dream and Tempest pictures echo Dadd closely. His device of framing the scene in a painted proscenium arch decorated with other episodes from the plays is a reminder of the crucial role that theatre played in Victorian fairyland. IIIb.

It must have been about two hours later that I moved on in a daze. Soon afterwards it was to be seen everywhere thanks to the psychedelic mood of the times, but I've never grown tired of it. His other paintings are more in the accepted style of Victorian fairy painting, which was a wonderfully subversive way of celebrating sensuality in those repressed days. As with pseudo-classical sculpture it was an accepted medium for nudity and other forbidden fruits. Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke

Victorian Art in Britain Richard Dadd
Richard Dadd was a founder member of “The Clique,” other artists involved being Frith, Augustus Egg, and H N O’Neil. In the early 1840s, Dadd travelled to the Middle East. The myriad of unnacustomed sights and experiences of this journey changed the work of the painter, and he exhibited the first signs of the insanity that was to define the rest of his life. Dadd’s father-it is tempting to say Dadd’s Dad-was advised to take his overwrought son for a stay in the country to calm him down. Tragically the by now insane painter, stabbed his father to death in Cobham, Surrey, then quickly left the country. Dadd intended to kill the Austrian Emperor, but stabbed a fellow passenger on a stagecoach in France, and was arrested and brought back to England. He spent the rest of his life in institutions for the insane, where he was generally well-treated and encouraged to continue to paint. The pictures painted by Dadd are densely packed with fantastic fairy figures, and are both fascinating original works of art, and a record of his schizophrenia. Artists in many fields often pay a high price for their creativity, and their legacy to their public. Richard Dadd, perhaps, paid a higher price than anyone else.

    ~*~ Richard Dadd ~*~
Richard Dadd was born in Chatham, Kent, on August 1, 1817. As a child, Richard attended The King's School at Rochester, where he developed a taste for classics and Shakespeare that stayed with him throughout his life. Although little of his work from this period survives, Allderidge has him sketching seriously at 13. His father was a carver and bronzeworker and Richard Dadd may have received informal tutorials from some of his father's associates before he applied and was admitted to the Royal Academy in December of 1837 at age 20.
At the Academy, Dadd became friends with John Phillip, who was subsequently to marry Richard's sister Mary Elizabeth, and William Powell Frith (1819-1909), who was subsequently to play a significant role in Victorian genre painting and contemporary scene painting. Later, this circle was expanded to include Augustus Egg, Harry Nelson O'Neill, Alfred Elmore, Edward Matthew Ward, Thomas Joy and William Bell Scott. This group was, in one form or another, known as the Clique in contemporary artistic circles, and frequently met in Dadd's rooms in Great Queen Street.
While at the Academy, Dadd won three silver medals for draughtmanship, and began exhibiting during his first year at the Academy, in the British Artists' Association. During 1840 and 1841, he began to work on Shakespeare illustrations in earnest, and in 1842, he exhibited a version of one of his greatest early works, "Come Unto These Yellow Sands" at the Royal Academy Exhibit.

Arts Books ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Artists have long been famed for their volatile temperaments and dark moods, but are they, as Patricia Cornwell alleges of Walter Sickert, capable of murder? We take a look at four accomplished artists who became notorious killers. Caravaggio (1571-1610) Born in 1571 in Caravaggio, near Bergamo in Italy, the influential Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was orphaned at the age of 11 and apprenticed to the painter Simone Peterzano of Milan. In 1588 Caravaggio moved to Rome and by 1592 was causing mounting scandal in the city, due not only to his controversial and revolutionary painting techniques, but also to his highly volatile temperament. In 1600 Caravaggio was accused of assaulting a fellow painter and in the following year wounded a soldier. In 1603 Caravaggio spent a period in prison and in April 1604 was accused of throwing a plate of artichokes in the face of a waiter, In October of the same year he was arrested for allegedly throwing stones at the city guards. In May 1605, following a further arrest for wounding a man during an argument, Caravaggio was forced to flee Rome. After returning to the city, on May 29 1606, Caravaggio killed a man, Ranuccio Tomassoni, during a brawl over a disputed tennis match. Fearful of the consequences of his act, Caravaggio again fled the city, eventually reaching Naples in 1607. Caravaggio spent the last four years of his life travelling around southern Italy and Malta, returning to Naples in 1609.
