The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke (FFM) (in the Tate collection Richard Dadd , a Victorian gentleman, a convicted murderer and patient at the famous Bedlam asylum, spent nine years carefully crafting his masterpiece. He wrote a guidebook for it and insisted that each of the hundred characters in the painting is assigned a special task. What does he mean? Well, Neil Gaiman, among others was inspired by this painting (it influenced the Sandman) and considers it a life-long obsession. He also wrote the introduction to a new book being published about the painting as a gateway to the supernatural world.
A bit of background: Dadd was a painter of Victorian Fairy Art . The obsession with fairies was like a fever that overtook the Victorian Mind. Another painter of note was Richard Doyle , the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes). A.C. Doyle himself was involved in a fascinating controversy that raged at the time. the Cottingley fairies , in which two young girls circulated photos of themselves with fairies . Doyle proclaimed that the photos "

Richard Dadd (1817-1886)
Best known for his fairy pictures and the sad circumstances of his life, the artist Richard Dadd grew up in Chatham on the Medway, going to school at Rochester ( on these pages for its artistic interest ). Many of his family were involved with shipbuilding, and Dadd's early interests were ships and sketching the landscape around where he lived - Rochester Castle appears in the background of some of his pictures. He studied at the Royal Academy, where he came under the influence of painters such as Etty Maclise Mulready and Henry Howard, and began to paint fairy subjects from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Tempest', as well as increasingly his own subjects. He was also a member of the group of artists known as the Clique. In 1842, Dadd went on a 10 month trip with a wealthy lawyer, Sir Thomas Phillips, to draw his journey as he travelled through Europe and the Near and Middle East, and while on this trip he began to suffer headaches and delusions. Eventually, feeling himself to be under the command of the Egyptian god Osiris, he returned to England, murdered his father, and escaped to France, before being captured and sent to the London lunatic asylum of Bethlem Hospital in 1844. He was kept there for 20 years before being transferred to Broadmoor Asylum in Berkshire, where he was to live out the remainder of his life. Dadd's most important pictures were The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke and Contradiction, Oberon and Titania

Richard Dadd is remembered today for the mysterious and magical fairy paintings produced after his tumultuous descent into the realms of madness and insanity.
Richard Dadd's early paintings were of landscape, marine and animal subjects. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1837 and became a founder member of a group of artists known as 'The Clique'.
In 1842 Dadd travelled to the Middle East with his patron, Sir Thomas Phillips. The exhilaration of the journey was such that Dadd already doubted his own sanity on his return to London. He entered the competition for the decoration of the Houses of Parliament, but after his design was rejected his mental health deteriorated, resulting in the murder of his father in August 1843.
Dadd fled to France but was arrested and admitted to Bethlem Hospital. His schizophrenia was recognised and he was extremely fortunate in being attended by sympathetic doctors who encouraged him to paint. Isolated from the world outside and from new developments in art, he fell back upon the themes of his sane period, historical and literary subjects, portraits and fairies.
Dadd's most extraordinary achievement is the enigmatic The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke (1855-64), a hallucinatory vision of fantastic creatures, seen as if with a magnifying glass through a delicate network of grasses and flowers. All are watching the fairy woodman (or 'feller') aiming his axe at a hazelnut, a moment pregnant with never-to-be-explained significance.

Titania Sleeping by Richard Dadd, 1819-1887. 1841. Oil on canvas. 23 1/2 x 30 1/2 inches. Provenance: H. Farrer, who bought the painting from the Royal Academy exhibition of 1841; Samuel Ashton, (in 1857); Thomas Ashton; Col. C. H. Wilkinson, of Worcester College, Oxford; Col. Wilkinson's sale, Sotheby's, 25 May 1960, lot 69; Miss V. R. Levine.
Commentary by Christopher Newall
Dadd's painting illustrates Act II scene 2 of Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream , where Titania is lulled to sleep by her fairy attendants. Oberon, whose figure is almost hidden in the shadows of the cave, prepares to squeeze juice from the magic flower on Titania's eyelids. The picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1841 with the quotation in the exhibition catalogue: 'There sleeps Titania sometime of the night Lulled in these flowers with dances and delight". The present picture, and its companion at the Royal Academy, Puck,' were enthusiastically reviewed at that exhibition; the acclaim with which they were received served to establish Dadd's reputation as a fairy painter. Patricia Allderidge has analysed the composition of the painting in the following words: [It] is conceived as a spiral snail's shell shape, set slightly obliquely to the surface plane of the picture, arching round from the left-hand side of the cave's mouth and swirling across the foreground through the trail of toadstools which are scattered over the grass, until it meets up with the dancing figures on the left. The tightness of the structure and the complete integration of the figures with the natural world of their surroundings creates, as in all Dadd's fairy paintings, the feeling of a self-contained microcosm, existing entirely on its own terms and in its own context.

'the young man states himself to be the son and envoy of God, sent to exterminate the men most possessed with the demon. He related with the greatest coolness, that in the park of Lord Darnley he was seized, being with him who is said to be his father, with a divine inspiration, which commanded him to sacrifice him; he immediately plunged his knife into his breast; and as death came not fast enough, he made deep wounds in his neck with a razor. Dr Leblanc, who was commissioned to examine him, asked him what he thought of such an action, Dadd replied that he considered it a good one, since he had destoryed an enemy of God. He has but on thought, which is the extermination of a large part of mankind.' work
