You are in: Museum of Art Hall of American Art Jasper Francis Cropsey Jasper Francis Cropsey CROPSEY, Jasper Francis , painter, born in Rossville, N. Y., 18 Feb., 1823. After studying architecture for five years he turned his attention to landscape painting, under the instruction of Edward Maury. He visited England, France, Switzerland, and Italy in 1847, went abroad again in 1855, and resided seven years in London, sending his pictures to the Royal academy and to the International exhibition of 1862. After his return home, in 1863, he opened a studio in New York, where he resided until 1885, when he re-moved to Hastings-on-Hudson. He has been since 1851 a member of the National academy. Please direct any comments to John J. Hender son Introduction Help ... Jasper Francis Cropsey Cropsey received his early training as an architect and set up his own office in 1843. He began painting shortly thereafter and first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1844. A year later he was elected an associate member and, in 1851, a full member. Cropsey's interest in architecture continued throughout his life and was a strong influence in his painting, most evident in his precise arrangement and outline of forms. But Cropsey was best known for his lavish use of color and, as a first-generation member from the Hudson River School, painted autumn landscapes that startled viewers with their boldness and brilliance. He traveled in Europe from 1847 to 1849 and lived in En gland from 1856 to 1863. Surviving sketchbooks indicate that Cropsey was in the White Mountains in the summer of 1852 and in 1856. He may have made another visit to the area in 1878. His sketches from nature done on these trips are often marked with color notes as well as the subject or location. Cropsey became interested in Luminism after the Civil War and also in watercolor painting. He founded the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1867. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum, and at the Royal Academy in London. His work has been preserved by the New York Historical Society, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Peabody Institute.

HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL Dawn of Morning, Lake George Jasper Francis Cropsey Oil on canvas, dated 1868 AIHA Collection Jasper Cropsey was at the height of his career in the 1860s when Dawn of Morning, Lake George was painted. With its luminous sky and background and the romantic, wild shore in the foreground, this painting depicts Cropsey's notion of the ideal American landscape, with the solitary Native American hunter in the wilderness. Trained as an architect, Jasper Cropsey studied watercolor and life drawing at the National Academy of Design and had turned exclusively to landscape painting by 1845. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Richmond, VA Thomas Hart Benton and Jasper Francis Cropsey paintings Acquired by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts T he trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts have approved the acquisition of Thomas Hart Benton 's Brideship , one of the final two canvases painted by Benton for his first mural cycle, "The American Historical Epic." The painting, also known as Colonial Brides , was conceived while Benton (1889-1975) was serving in the U.S. Navy at Norfolk, Va., and was executed in oil and egg tempera on canvas about 1927-28. It measures 60-3/16 by 42-1/8 inches. The painting depicts a woman on a wharf selling herself as a bride to pay her passage to the New World. The model for the bride was Benton's wife, Rita. The museum's curator of American arts, Dr. David Park Curry, calls the painting "a rare, important and unexpected example of American regionalism - an early, yet fully mature picture by Benton." "Not only was the picture conceived here in the Commonwealth," Cuny says, "but this particular image also depicts a Colonial subject that admirably complements the nature and focus of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts permanent American collection." The acquisition of the painting was part museum purchase through the Harwood and Louise Cochrane Fund and part gift of Crosby Kemper of Kansas City, Mo.
