PLE ASE RETURN TO MAIN PAGE JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT Paris 1796 Corot's late landscapes are among the most sought after and influential paintings of the nineteenth century; but the path he followed to this success was intensely individual. Born in the late eighteenth century, Corot combined genuine respect for classical landscape principles with a deeply felt personal vision that often gives his work a startling naiveté. His skills with a paint brush were hard won, but his incomparable eye for subtle colour variation seems to have been inborn. Corot is usually associated with the Barbizon school of landscape painters, many of whom were close personal friends, but Corot's landscapes themselves often have more in common with the seventeenth-century paintings of Poussin or the turn-of-the twentieth-century compositions of Cézanne. Corot was born in Paris to parents who were successful milliners on the Rue du Bac. As a child he was raised by a nursemaid in L'Isle-Adam north of Paris (an area to which he would return to paint later). In 1815, Corot was apprenticed to a cloth merchant and only in 1822 when he was 26 did his parents agree to support his interest in a painting career.

Trained-in the classical tradition of French landscape, founded chiefly on Poussin, Corot went to Italy in 1825, and returned there many times. There are three distinct styles in his painting. His early classical landscapes, painted in rich panels of colour, often in the full glare of an Italian noon, influenced Cezanne and other Post-Impressionists in their composition by tonal contrasts instead of strict drawing. In the 2nd style are the soft and silvery woodland scenes painted from the 1850s to his death. Finally he painted a few portraits and studies of women. "When one finds oneself alone confronted by nature, one extricates oneself as best one can, and naturally one invents one's own style." Corot spent much of his life without widespread appreciation by France's artistic establishment or the public. Undeterred and blessed with an independent income, he pursued his own course: to preserve the freshness of his impressions of nature. The Impressionists , whom he later befriended, embraced this intention, but unlike them, Corot painted only sketches outdoors; he composed his finished paintings in the studio. When Corot was twenty-six, he decided to make art his career. With his father's financial support, he received training and traveled, visiting Italy three times. On his first trip, he painted small landscape studies with simple forms and a crisp, pure light that influenced many younger painters. In the 1850s, Corot began painting the silvery, feathery landscapes that brought him such popularity—and were frequently forged, even in his own lifetime. Still later, for his own pleasure, he painted figures, which he seldom exhibited. Kindly "Père Corot" was universally beloved and generous. He supported Jean-François Millet's widow and bought a house for the ailing, destitute Honoré Daumier.
