The artist himself deemed the portrait "beyond Compare the best Lady's portrait I ever Drew." The image of romantic fashionability, Mrs. Gage is depicted wearing an iridescent caftan over a lace trimmed chemise with a jeweled brooch at her breast and an embroidered belt at her waist. Pearls and a turban-like swath of drapery adorn her hair. Copley's depiction of Mrs.Gage in turban and uncorseted caftan make this one of the most sexually charged portraits produced in colonial America. cartmuse@neo.rr.com

Going Turkish!
Mrs. Gage's wish to be portrayed in turquerie put her in the company of countless English women who were "going Turkish" to masquerade balls. Their American peers, however, who had no occasions to wear such costumes, participated in the exhilarating world of exotic disguise through portraiture. In the artist's studio, clients had the chance to look more stylish than they could in real life. Copley offered his subjects the option of selecting poses, settings, costumes, and coiffures from English sources. In the space of the painted canvas, he created for them alternate or desired appearances. The exhibition is comprised of a select group of eight portraits drawn from public and private collections throughout the United States explores the phenomenon of turquerie. While Copley's painting of Margaret Kemble Gage is generally considered the most historically prominent American picture in this style, many other colonial women participated in the drama of Oriental imagery. Featured in the exhibition are several important Copley works, including Mrs. John Greene, ca. 1769, from The Cleveland Museum of Art and Mrs. Adam Babcock (Abigail Smith), 1774 from the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Also on view are examples of the genre by American painters Benjamin West and Ralph Earl. A ca. 1730 portrait of Mrs. Kiliaen Van Rensselaer by an unidentified artist is the earliest painting in the exhibition.

http://www.honors.uiuc.edu/eng255/gallery/enlightenment/johnwinthrop.html
It rarely makes sense to think that when a century changes or one designated "era" gives way to another, all values change utterly and for everyone. The portrait below is also by Copley this time it's of a Boston minister, a leader in the still-flourishing Calvinist faith of the city. His garb and general demeanor are largely the same as Mather and Sewall would have favored two or three generations before. The name of this preacher? John Winthrop. Same family and same vocation. The telescope, though, and the impression that this Winthrop looks out at the world with scientific curiosity, suggest a reconciliation of his Calvinism with the science and logic of this new age.

This John Singleton Copley portrait of John Adams (c. 1790) seems murky on the screen, but in it you can see a man celebrated for his intellectual accomplishments, his integrity, the breadth and depth of his interests, and his supreme self-possession. See the documents on the table? Is there a Bible anywhere? Globes, maps, charters documents that convey a primary interest in the details of life right here, on this earth, in this new country. Nonetheless, there is a puritan austerity to Adams's dress and deportment, suggesting a carryover of some of the temperament and values of his Calvinist forebears.

followed by the final campaign of Chorrillos and Miraflores (1880), in which he led at first a brigade (as colonel) and afterwards a division under Baquedano. His services at the battle of Chorrillos led to his appointment to command the Army of Occupation in Peru. This difficult post he filled with success, but his action in putting the Peruvian president, Garcia Calderon, under arrest excited considerable comment. His last act was to invest Iglesias with supreme power in Peru, and he returned to his own country in 1883. Promoted rear-admiral, he served as Chilean Minister at Madrid for two years, and died at sea in naval heroes. Lynchburg, named in honour of John Lynch, who inherited a large tract of land here and in 1757 established a ferry across the James, was established as a village by Act of Assembly in 1786, was incorporated as a town in 1805, and became a city in 1852. During the Civil War it was an important base of supplies for the Confederates; on the 16th of June 1864 it was invested by Major-General David Hunter (1802—1886), but three days later he was driven away by General Jubal A. Early. In 1908 the city’s corporate limits were extended. out ~summary punishment to offenders.1 In Europe early examples of a similar phenomenon are found in the proceedings of the Vehmgerichte in medieval Germany, and of Lydford law, gibbet law or Halifax law, Cowper justice and Jeddart justice in the thinly settled and border districts of Great Britain; and since the term “lynch law “ came into colloquial use, it is loosely employed to cover any case in which a portion of the community takes the execution of its ideas of justice into its own hands, irrespective of the legal authorities.

John Singleton Copley American, 1738 - 1815 John Singleton Copley was born in Boston in 1738, and grew up there, training in the visual arts under his step-father Peter Pelham (c. 1697-1751), an English engraver who had immigrated in 1727 and married Copley's widowed mother in 1748. Copley's earliest paintings, from the mid-1750s, reveal the influence of English mezzotint portraits as well as the work of local and itinerant artists. He experimented with many media: oil on canvas, miniatures on copper or ivory, pastel, and printmaking. By the late 1750s he was established as a portrait painter.
Self Portrait Copley worked in Boston until 1774 with the exception of a six month painting trip to New York City in 1771. By the mid-1760s he wanted to compare his works with those by contemporaries in England, and in 1765 he sent a portrait of his half-brother Henry Pelham, Boy with a Squirrel , to the annual exhibition of the Society of Artists of Great Britain. Encouraged by Benjamin West and Joshua Reynolds, Copley left Boston for study in Europe. He left for London in 1774 and went almost immediately to Italy, where he spent more than a year, studying and painting. He returned to London in 1775, settling there with his wife and three of his children, who had come from Boston. 1776 marked the beginning of the second half of Copley's career. As his first work at the Royal Academy he exhibited

Lyndhurst, John Singleton Copley, Baron 1772-1863, British jurist, b. Boston, Mass.; son of John Singleton Copley, the American painter. Educated in England, he was called to the bar in 1804. He attained notice by his successful defense of Arthur Thistlewood and James Watson (1817). He entered (1818) Parliament, became solicitor general (1819), attorney general (1824), and master of the rolls (1826). Between 1827 and 1846 he was three times lord chancellor. Although he defended radicals earlier in his career, in political life he was a Tory and a leader of his party in the House of Lords. See biography by Sir Theodore Martin (1883).
