Copley, John Singleton E
Pronunciation Key
Copley, John Singleton , American portrait painter, b. Boston. Copley is considered the greatest of the American old masters. He studied with his stepfather, Peter Pelham , and undoubtedly frequented the studios of Smibert and Feke . At 20 he was already a successful portrait painter with a mature style remarkable for its brilliance, clarity, and forthright characterization. In 1766 his Boy with the Squirrel was exhibited in London and won the admiration of Benjamin West , who urged him to come to England. However, he remained in America for eight years longer and worked in New York City and Philadelphia as well as in Boston. In 1774 Copley visited Italy and then settled in London, where he spent the remainder of his life, enjoying many honors and the patronage of a distinguished clientele. In England his style gained in subtlety and polish but lost most of the vigor and individuality of his early work. He continued to paint portraits but enlarged his repertoire to include the enormous historical paintings that constituted the chief basis of his fame abroad. His large historical painting The Death of Lord Chatham (Tate Gall., London) gained him admittance to the Royal Academy. His rendering of a contemporary disaster

Copley was the first American artist to take an active role in the design and marketing of picture frames. He frequently recommended frames to his patrons. The frame on his portrait of Lydia Lynde is an elaborate English type made in Boston. Copley chose this frame for at least fourteen different portraits. Each frame, like this one, consists of a wide band of carved decoration and leaves, a strip texturized with sand under the gilding , and a carved sight edge . The painted oval surrounding the portrait is purely a compositional device rather than an indication that the painting was intended for an oval frame.

John Singleton Copley Copley, John Singleton (b. July 3, 1738, Boston [Mass., U.S.]d. Sept. 9, 1815, London, Eng.) Generally considered the finest painter of colonial America, John Singleton Copley painted portraits and historical subjects. His Boston portraits show a thorough knowledge of his New England models, and his talent as a draftsman and colorist produced pictures of aristocratic elegance and grace (emigrated to London in 1775). Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, Mass., to immigrants recently arrived from Ireland. He began to paint in about 1753. His earliest works show the influence of his stepfather, an engraver, and the Boston artist John Smibert. In about 1755 Copley met the English artist Joseph Blackburn, whose use of rococo lightness and coloring he quickly adopted. He also made use of the rococo device called portrait d'apparatportraying the subject with objects associated with his daily lifethat gave his work a distinction not usually found in 18th-century American painting. Eager to expand his reputation beyond New England, Copley sent his Boy with a Squirrel in 1766 to the Society of Artists in London. It was praised by both Sir Joshua Reynolds and by the transported American artist Benjamin West, who urged him to come to London. He did so in 1774 and painted his first important work, Watson and the Shark, there in 1778. In this painting Copley used what became a frequent theme of 19th-century Romantic art, the struggle of humans against nature. Although he remained in England the rest of his life and was moderately successful, his historical paintings never had the vitality or realism of his Boston portraits.

George Eastman Collection of the University of Rochester, 77.1 John Singleton Copley had a great deal of respect and admiration for British artists. Despite his success as a portrait painter in America, Copley eventually moved to London before the Revolution began. He and his family’s emigration allowed him become a part of the European art world. His move was also about his family’s safety. It was Copley’s father-in-law’s tea that was dumped into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party. Neither of these portraits is directly related to the About Face exhibit. Rather they are included to motivate students to look elsewhere in the museum and ask similar questions as those asked about the Nathaniel Hurd portrait. Both works are portraits of and by British people roughly contemporary with the Hurd portrait. These portraits are intended to show the students a different point of view concerning the British population. These are visual documents that can put faces to, and therefore humanize, the ‘other side’ in the American Revolution.

About the Portrait John Singleton Copley, 18th-century Boston's preeminent portraitist, painted Mrs. John Gray most likely in 1763. His subject, Mary Otis Gray, was the daughter of James and Mary Allyne Otis of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Born in 1730, Mary had many siblings, among them James Otis, Jr., and Mercy Otis Warren, who both became active in the Revolutionary cause in America. In 1761, Mary wed John Gray, a Boston merchant, ropewalk owner, and collector of customs, and a Tory. She died on November 5 of the year that Copley painted this portrait. In 1923, a bequest of Pelham Winslow Warren gave the painting, along with mourning rings for Mrs. Gray and her infant son, John, to the Society. Mrs. John Gray is representative of John Singleton Copley's mature American style. Although his drawing remained a weak point-here evident in Mrs. Gray's awkward right arm and her hands-Copley employed a subtler use of shading and shadow than in his earlier portraits, as well as a sophisticated composition of vertical and diagonal elements.

click image for more detail (large bandwidth) About John Singleton Copley Born in Boston in 1738/9, John Singleton Copley expressed an interest in art at an early age. He began his formal artistic education in 1748 when his widowed mother married Boston engraver and artist Peter Pelham. He studied the work of fellow Boston artists John Smibert, Robert Feke, and John Greenwood, and learned basic art theory, composition, and painting by copying from prints and portraits in local collections. When Joseph Blackburn arrived in Boston in 1755, young Copley discovered the lighter Rococo style, which he quickly absorbed, then developing his own use of color and dramatic lighting. Copley soon emerged as the preeminent portrait painter in 18th-century New England. His roster of works includes many prominent Bostonians, including Joseph Warren, Mercy Otis Warren, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere. In 1774, Copley moved to England, where he would live for the rest of his life. While he continued to paint portraits, he concentrated increasingly on dramatic renderings of historical events. The most prominent among these was

His portraits, described by American painter Matthew Pratt as filled with "flesh and blood," reflect famed painter Benjamin West 's urgings that he manipulate light, shadow and color to make features "appear almost a deception." In the exhibition "'Almost a Deception ...'John Singleton Copley and Company in Williamsburg," Colonial Williamsburg's DeWitt Wallace Gallery presents a comparative showing of two of Copley's portraits and those of his American contemporaries Rufus Hathaway and Charles Willson Peale, and the English painter Francis Cotes. The exhibition, on view through December 2000, includes Copley's circa 1767 oil portrait of Josiah Quincy and one of his pastels, "Mrs. Gregory Townsend." It also includes a 1793 oil portrait of Ezra Weston, Jr. by Hathaway; Peale's circa 1772-1775 oil portrait of Warner (?) Lewis Jr. of Gloucester, Va., and Cotes' 1770 oil portrait of Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort. Regarding Copley's Quincy painting, Colonial Williamsburg's Vice President of Collections and Museums Ron Hurst, "This is the first time that Colonial Williamsburg has ever exhibited such a beautiful and important portrait by Copley. By setting it in the context of other colonial artists' works, and of English products of the same time, viewers will be able to get a better sense of the major qualities that make John Singleton Copley so revered and so highly esteemed today."

Click to enlarge Paul Revere is one of the most enduring names of the American Revolution. A simple silversmith who provided a touch of elegence to the staple materials of the growing upper class in Boston, he supplemented his income as an express rider for the Boston Commitee of Corresponsence and the Massachussetts Committee on Safety to carry news and important papers a few towns and a few colonies away. On April 18, 1775, Revere was commissioned to take news from Boston to Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington that the British were coming to arrest them. Revere stopped at every house along the way to warn them that the British were coming, rising the "Sons of Liberty" committee who soon faced the British troops at the Lexington Green in an early battle of the Revolutionary War.
