Cassatt, Mary
Type of Work: Painting Born: 1845 (Pennsylvania) Died: Nationality: American Style/Movement: Impressionism Best Known For: Images of women and children. Important Works:
  • The Bath, 1892
  • The Letter, 1891
Bio: Mary Cassatt was born in 1845 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a youngster, Cassatt was very interested in art - a passion which according to some, was not fully encouraged by her father, a banker. He did however support his daughter in her wishes to first study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and then travel extensively in Europe when she was in her early 20s. At the age of 32, Cassatt was thrilled to meet Edgar Degas who was evidently just as taken with her and her work. He was so impressed, that he invited the artist to exhibit with the Impressionists, which she did from 1879-1881 and again in 1886.

Mary Cassatt
Born in Pittsburgh, this American artist studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia before traveling extensively throughout Europe. The daughter of an affluent businessman, Cassatt's parents were not enthused with their daughter's aspirations to became an artist, preferring instead for her to return home to marry and settle down. But the independent Cassatt made Paris her permanent home in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist Exhibition and Cassatt's first Salon success. She met Degas in 1877 and the relationship had an immediate effect on Cassatt's work. While she employed an impressionist style and exhibited at 4 of 8 Impressionist exhibitions, her paintings express a uniqueness of their own. Most famous for her mother and daughter paintings, Cassatt also called upon other motifs which depicted the world around her. Access to the cafes and corridors of her male counterparts were denied to women, yet Cassatt's paintings are expressions of her ability to circumvent these limitations and reflect another aspect of Parisian modern life. She produced genre paintings and portraiture, and Cassatt's depictions of women are ones of independent and powerful beings. Cassatt became an important promoter of Impressionism in America. In 1914 she was awarded the gold Metal of Honor from Pennsylvania Academy. Opera and theatre were popular subjects for the Impressionists, often treated by Degas and Renoir, but here Cassatt tries something different. She presents her subject in the role of viewer. A role generally taken on by the male. Analysis of this painting centers around notions of gazing and the spectator. Like Cassatt herself, this woman is clear sighted and determined. With the tools of sight in her hands, she immerses herself in the activity of looking. Veins straining in her arm, she is oblivious to the spectator, and to the man who gazes at her from the distant balcony. This painting can be compared to Renoirs Loge (1874).

Mary Cassatt
by Eleanor Tufts Mary Cassatt, b. Allegheny City, Pa., May 22, 1847 [1844?], d. June 14, 1926, was the first American artist to associate with the impressionists and the only American ever to exhibit with them (1877, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1886). She was also the first to promote the impressionists in the United States and is responsible for the appearance of many impressionist paintings in American collections. Cassatt trained (1861-65) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts . In 1872 she studied graphic techniques at the Academy of Parma in Italy. She settled in Paris and submitted works to the 1872 and 1873 Salons. Her submission to the 1874 Salon, Portrait of Mme. Cortier (Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco), attracted the attention of Edgar Degas, who remarked, "There is someone who feels as I do." In 1875 she studied briefly with the academic painter Charles Chaplin; two years later she met and began a close association with Degas, who invited her to join the impressionist group. When Cassatt exhibited A Woman in Black at the Opera (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) in the impressionist show of 1880, the influence of Degas and of their mutual study of Japanese prints was clearly evident: the subject of a woman seated in a balcony, peering through opera glasses; the asymmetry of composition, reinforced by vertical and diagonal bands in the background; the development of distant figures with loose, sketchy brushstrokesall are quotations from Degas's many theater scenes.

    Cassatt, Mary Stevenson
(1844-1926), painter Born on May 22, 1844, in Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, Mary Cassatt lived in Europe for five years as a young girl. She was tutored privately in art in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861-65, but she preferred learning on her own and in 1866 traveled to Europe to study. Her first major showing was at the Paris Salon of 1872; four more annual Salon exhibitions followed. In 1874 Cassatt chose Paris as her permanent residence and established her studio there. She shared with the Impressionists an interest in experiment and in using bright colors inspired by the out-of-doors. Edgar Degas became her friend; his style and that of Gustave Courbet inspired her own. Degas was known to admire her drawing especially, and at his request she exhibited with the Impressionists in 1879 and joined them in shows in 1880, 1881, and 1886. Like Degas, Cassatt showed great mastery of drawing, and both artists preferred unposed asymmetrical compositions. Cassatt also was innovative and inventive in exploiting the medium of pastels. Initially Cassatt was a figure painter whose subjects were groups of women drinking tea or on outings with friends. After the great exhibition of Japanese prints held in Paris in 1890, she brought out her series of 10 colored prints
