Biography
Hieronymus, or Jerome, Bosch , b. c.1450, d. August 1516, spent his entire artistic career in the small Dutch town of Hertogenbosch, from which he derived his name. At the time of his death, Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Bosch's works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and they were imitated in a number of paintings and prints throughout the 16th century, especially in the works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogenbosch, all of which are now lost. The artist probably never went far from home, although records exist of a commission in 1504 from Philip the Handsome (later king of Castile), for a lost Last Judgment altarpiece. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them. Contributors: Michael Shephard Mark Harden and Carol Gerten-Jackson

Hieronymus BOSCH
Hieronymus Bosch was one of those rare artists who introduce a new vision to the history of his medium.
His phantasmagoric images of Heaven and Hell were conjured out of the visions and myths.
That swirled and howled in the minds of many Christians poised
between the Middle Ages and the Reformation in Northern Europe.
These same images seem to have a special relevance to our own century.
Which has elevated the painter to that pantheon of heroes who faced unflinchingly the human condition.
For not only do Bosch's tormented demons prefigure the discovery of the unconscious with its demonic forces,
but his portrayal of the destructive power of machines proved a prophesy of our own dilemmas.
As a painter who broke down and stepped outside of the established boundaries of his art.
He is one of a handful of precursors of the art of our time, with its emphasis on originality of expression. The descendant of generations of painters who lived far from the centers of art and culture in a small Dutch town, where he too painted and died, Bosch displayed a talent that was neither provincial nor naive.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450-1516)
Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1460-1518) was a Dutch painter of the 15th century. He was a prolific painter of depictions of sin and human moral failings. He said to have been an inspiration to the surrealism movement in the 20th century. Commonly called Bosch from his birthplace Hertogenbosch, his name was actually Hieronymus van Aeken. He was probably a pupil of Albert Ouwater, and may be called the Breughel of the 15th century, for he devoted himself to the invention of bizarre types, diableries, and scenes of the kind generally associated with Breughel, whose art is to a great extent based on Bosch's. He was a satirist much in advance of his time, and one of the most original and ingenious artists of the 15th century. He exercised great influence on Lucas Cranach , who frequently copied his paintings. His works were much admired in Spain, especially by Philip II of Spain, at whose court Bosch painted for some time. One of his chief works is the "Last Judgment" at the Berlin gallery, which also owns a little "St Jerome in the Desert." "The Fall of the Rebellious Angels" and the "St Anthony" triptych are in the Brussels museum, and two important triptychs are at the Munich gallery. The Lippmann collection in Berlin contains an important "Adoration of the Magi," the Antwerp museum a "Passion," and a practically unknown painting from his brush is at the Naples museum. Bosch, Hieronymus, or Jerom Bos c. 1450 , Flemish painter. His surname was van Aeken; Bosch refers to Hertogenbosch, where he was born and worked. Little is known of his life and training. His paintings, executed in brilliant colors and with an uncanny mastery of detail, are filled with animated objects, bizarre plants and animals, and monstrous, amusing, or diabolical figures believed to have been suggested by folk legends, allegorical poems, moralizing religious literature, and aspects of late Gothic art. Such works as the Garden of Earthly Delights (Prado) appear to be intricate allegories; their symbolism, however, is obscure and has consistently defied unified interpretation. Bosch clearly had an interest in the grotesque, the exuberant, and the macabre. King Philip II of Spain collected some of his finest creations. The Temptation of St. Anthony (Lisbon) and The Last Judgment were recurring themes. Other examples of his art may be seen in the Escorial and in Brussels. Examples of the Adoration of the Magi are in the Metropolitan Museum and in the Philadelphia Museum, which also has the

(c. 1450-1516) See also: Renaissance Surrealism VIEW IMAGE LIST "Hieronymous Bosch produced some of the most inventive fantasy paintings that have ever existed. His obsessive and nightmarish vision has its antecedents in the Gothic twilight world of the late Middle Ages and, although the allegorical medieval world view is now lost, there have been many recent attempts to 'read' his pictures, not least by those who have attempted to interpret Bosch by dream analysis. The Garden of Earthly Delights demonstrates Bosch's dazzling ability to build up a hugely detailed landscape through a series of bizarre exaggerations and distortions. The complete work consists of four paintings on a series of folding panels; the outer panel reveals the Third Day of Creation when closed. Inside, The Garden of Earthly Delights is flanked on the left by the Garden of Eden and on the right by Hell . A wild sexual orgy features in the central panel, where lust is shown to be the cause of man's downfall. There are over a thousand figures in this work altogether. Standing alone in its lifetime, Bosch's work has a timeless and modern quality that greatly endeared him to Surrealists in the twentieth century."

The Seven Deadly Sins
c. 1480
Oil on panel, 120 x 150 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid
This is one of Bosch's earliest known works and reflects the style and preoccupation which would later come to be considered characteristic of him. It belonged to Philip II King of Spain, who kept it in his apartments at the monastery of the Escorial. The Seven Deadly Sins is a painted rectangle with a central image of the eye of God with Christ watching the world. The Seven Deadly Sins, depicted through scenes of worldly transgression, are arranged around the circular shape. The circular layout with God in the centre represents God's all seeing eye: No sin goes unnoticed. In the corners of the image appear the "Four Last Things" (the last four stages of life) mentioned in late medieval spiritual handbooks: Deathbed, Last Judgment, Heaven, and Hell, all of which are favourite themes of separate Bosch panels. In the centre, fanned out around the figure of Christ, appear seven scenes each illustrating one of the Seven Deadly Sins, bearing the appropriate inscription and composed with the painter's usual vivacity and sense of the fantastic. (1) Anger presents a scene of jealousy and conflict; (2) in Pride, a demon presents a woman with a mirror; (3) in Lust, two sets of lovers speak within the confines of an open tent, entertained by a buffoon, while on the ground outside lie various musical instruments, including a harp which will reappear in the 'Garden of Earthly Delights'; (4) Idleness is represented by a woman dressed up for church and trying to wake a man deep in slumber; (5) Gluttony shows a table spread with food and around it figures eating voraciously; (6) Avarice displays a judge allowing himself to be bribed; and (7) Envy depicts the Flemish proverb 'Two dogs with one bone seldom reach agreement'.

H ieronymus (Jeroen) Bosch (c. 1453-1516) was one of those rare artists who introduce a new vision to the history of his medium. His phantasmagoric images of Heaven and Hell were conjured out of the visions and myths that swirled and howled in the minds of many Christians poised between the Middle Ages and the Reformation in Northern Europe. These same images seem to have a special relevance to our own century, which has elevated the painter to that pantheon of heroes who faced unflinchingly the human condition. The descendant of generations of painters who lived far from the centers of art and culture in a small Netherlandish town, where he too painted and died, Bosch displayed a talent that was neither provincial nor naive. His vision was serious, vast in scope and sure of itself, and never without its tinge of mocking and irony. His ghastly fancies were characteristic of the age, visible evidence of the fear of witchcraft and devilry that obsessed his contemporaries. While the subjects he chose to paint were unusual, his grasp of their sources in scripture, mystical texts, and homiletic literature reveal an intellect of uncommon power. A lone wolf and curious personality, it was inevitable that he would be an innovator.
