Lesbian Artist: Rosa Bonheur Rosa Bonheur formed an ardent attachment with Nathalie Micas . Nathalie Micas and her mother, Mme. Micas, lived at "By" with Rosa. Mme. Micas was Rosa Bonheur's housekeeper and these three women lived together until Nathalie Micas died in 1889. The biography and autobiography entitled Reminiscences of Rosa Bonheur, edited by Theodore Stanton, NY., Appleton, 1910, gives a detailed account of their life together. An intensely talented woman, Rosa Bonheur filled her life with successive artistic triumphs. Her beautiful canvases hang in all the great museums of the world. A single listing of her more famous animal canvases would fill a dozen pages. Probably the celebrated "Horse Fair" is her best known work. For her period she was a powerful personality and without ostentation she calmly ignored all the conventions she personally found unnecessary. She used tobacco, which was definitely not considered proper for a woman to use under any circumstances. In 1857 the Secretary-General of France issued a permit to Rosa Bonheur which allowed her to dress as a man legally . There are a number of amusing anecdotes concerning her disregard for hindering conventions cited in the above named biography. On one occasion a male friend teased her about going about in the company of men unchaperoned, and she replied, "Oh my dear Sir, if you knew how little I care for your sex, you wouldn't get any ideas into your head. The fact is, in the way of males, I like only the bulls I paint." On another occasion when Miss Bonheur was dressed as a woman, a policeman noticed her short hair and free and easy manners and arrested her thinking she was a man dressed as a woman. He was most chagrined to be introduced to the then most famous French artist by his own superiors. The culmination of her artistic career was her presentation of the Cross of the "Legion of Honor" by the Empress Eugenie.

Bonheur, Rosa (1822-1899)
page: The most popular artist of nineteenth-century France, Rosa Bonheur was also one of the first renowned painters of animals and the first woman awarded the Grand Cross by the French Legion of Honor. A professional artist with a successful career, Bonheur lived in two consecutive committed relationships with women. Born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, Marie Rosalie Bonheur was the oldest of the four children of Raimond Oscar Bonheur (1796-1849) and Sophie Marquis. Bonheur's father was an art teacher who came from a poor family, while her mother, a musician, had descended from a middle-class family and had been her husband's art student. Bonheur's father, who taught drawing and landscape painting, was an ardent member of the utopian Saint Simeon society. The group held idealistic beliefs about the reform of work, property, marriage, and the role of women in society. Most importantly, for the artist's future, the Saint Simeons questioned traditional gender norms and firmly believed in the equality of women. While teaching artistic techniques to his oldest daughter, Raimond Bonheur also encouraged her independence and taught her to consider art as a career. In 1828 Raimond Bonheur joined the Saint Simeons at their retreat outside Paris. Sophie and the children joined him in Paris the following year. Four years later, however, Raimond abandoned his family to live in isolation with his fellow Saint Simeons.

Rosa Bonheur
French Animal Painter
Rosa (Marie Rosalie) Bonheur was born March 16th 1822 in Bordeaux, France. She is widely acclaimed as an animal painter and was influenced by the work of the English artist, Landseer. Rosa Bonheur was one of the most renowned animal painters in history. Her earliest training was received from her father, a minor landscape painter, who encouraged her interest in art in general and in animals as her exclusive subject. He allowed her to keep a veritable menagerie in their home, including a sheep that is reported to have lived on the balcony of their sixth-floor Parisian apartment. Bonheur's unconventional lifestyle contributed to the myth that surrounded her during her lifetime. She smoked cigarettes in public, rode astride, and wore her hair short. To study the anatomy of animals, Bonheur visited the slaughterhouse; for this work, she favored men's attire and was required to obtain an official authorization from the police to dress in trousers and a smock. While radical in her personal life, Bonheur was artistically conservative. Henri Cain would later recall that she "was not only an exceedingly intelligent artist, but a very conscientious and hard-working one....She believed in honesty in art and ever desired to keep very close to nature." Bonheur's reputation grew steadily in the 1840's; she exhibited her animal paintings and sculptures at the Paris Salon regularly from 1841 to 1853. The Salons tended to support traditional styles, and most artists still sought to exhibit at the annual shows, as it was the primary way for their work to be seen by the public. In 1845 Bonheur won a third prize and in 1848 a gold medal.

BONGO (Bo öcercus cur ycerus), a West African bushbuck, the largest of the group. The male is deep chestnut, marked on the body with narrow white stripes, on the chest with a white crescent, and on the face by two white spots below the eye. In the East African bongo (B. e. Isaaei) the body hue is stronger and richer. There is, as yet, no evidence as to whether the females of the true bongo bear horns, though it is probable they do; but as the horns are present in both sexes of the East African form, Mr Oldfield Thomas has made that the type of the genus. i BONHEUR, ROSA (1822—1899), French painter, was born at Bordeaux on the 22nd of March 1822. She was of Jewish origin. Jacques Wiener, the Belgian medallist, a native of Venloo, says that he and Raymond Bonheur, Rosa’s father, used to attend synagogue in that town; while another authority asserts that Rosa used to be known in common parlance by the name of Rosa Mazeltov (a Hebrew term for “good luck,” Gallic~ Bonheur). She was the eldest of four children, all of whom were artists—Auguste (1824—1884) painted animals and landscape; Juliette (1830—1891) was “honourably mentioned” at the exhibition of 1855; Isidore, born in 1827, was a sculptor of animals. Rosa at an early age was taught to draw by her i Annals and Mag. Nat. Hist. vol. x. (seventh series), p. 309.
