Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Su vida Su obra A partir de la tercera década del siglo XVII el Barroco ya hace su plena irrupción. En la evolución histórica de la arquitectura barroca romana tiene una gran importancia la figura de Gianlorenzo Bernini. Éste nació en Nápoles en 1598, hijo de Pietro Bernini, escultor toscano que será el primero en darle lecciones. Más tarde su familia se trasladara a Roma, donde él y su padre trabajaran casi en exclusiva para los Borghese. En su adolescencia es ya un artista reconocido. El papa Paulo V Borghese fallece en 1621 y es sustituido por Clemente V Ludovisi y posteriormente sustituido por Urbano VIII Barberini, de origen toscano y que protegería a los artistas de este origen. Este papa tiene una concepción del arte diferente al rigorismo de anteriores papas, con un carácter humanista, siendo el arte un elemento de propaganda y difusión de la grandeza de Roma. Su pontificado se extiende entre 1623 y 1644, momentos de gran agitación política en Europa, con la Guerra de los Treinta Años (1618-1648) en la que se enfrentan las potencias protestantes con las imperiales y católicas del continente. Es esta época se ponen en duda la unidad de la Iglesia y la autoridad papal, concediéndole así el papa suma importancia a la exaltación del pontificado. Tras el pontificado de Inocencio X, Bernini se ve otra vez auspiciado de la mano de Alejandro VII Chigi, el cual trata de hacer de la arquitectura el modo más evidente de exhaltación del poder estatal del pontífice, encargándole la Plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano (1656-1667).

Bernini was the defining sculptor of the Italian Baroque, and although masterpieces by this supremely gifted artist are to be found in churches and galleries all over Rome, where he worked for almost his entire career, it is in St. Peter's that the full range of his prodigious talent is most evident. In 1657, the administrative arm of the Basilica, the Sacra Congregazione , announced the commission of metal candlesticks and crucifixes for the side-altars of St. Peter's and it is to this papal commission that our crucifix is connected. Substantial documentation detail the participation of those craftsmen involved with the various phases of the commission including Ercole Ferrata, who was responsible for the wax modeling of the Cristo Morto and Cristo Vivo Corpi. Bernini imbues our Cristo Morto with a vibrant inner energy and a sense of the passing moment, which is the definitive hallmark of his sculpture. We see Christ, it seems, at the very moment of his death. His finely modeled head, its features cast into shadow, has just fallen against his chest and the weight of his now lifeless, distended body pulls down on his arms, bringing his head far below the horizontal section of the cross against which we usually see it.

Although most significant as a sculptor, he was also highly gifted as an architect; painter; draftsman; designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings; and playwright. His art is the quintessence of high baroque energy and robustness ( see Baroque Art and Architecture). His ability to suggest textures of skin or cloth as well as to capture emotion and movement in sculpture was uncanny. Bernini reformed a number of sculptural genres, including the portrait bust, the fountain, and the tomb. His influence was widespread throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and was felt by such European masters as Pierre Puget, Pietro Bracci, and Andreas Schlüter. Bernini's life was dominated by his work, and his biography can be traced through the immense number of projects he undertook. His career developed almost entirely in Rome, although he was born in Naples. His father, Pietro Bernini, a talented sculptor of the late Mannerist style, was his son's first teacher ( see Mannerism). Bernini commenced carving Apollo and Daphne from a solid block of white marble as soon as he had finished Pluto and Persephone. When it was completed, slightly more than a year later, "all Rome rushed to see it as though it were a miracle." The statue depicts that precise moment of the myth when the pursuing Apollo catches up with Daphne and she, assisted by her father the river god, turns into a laurel tree to escape his grasp. We see leaves sprouting from her fingers and hair, and a sheath of bark enfolding her delicate body. Not only do we see that dramatic moment frozen for eternity, but, by the sweeping movement implied in the figures, our mind expands the space surrounding the statue to include the path of the pursuit. Although most significant as a sculptor, he was also highly gifted as an architect, painter, draftsman, stage set designer, and playwright. His art is the quintessence of high baroque energy and robustness. Born in Naples as Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, he was taught by his father, Pietro Bernini, a talented sculptor. Many of Bernini's early sculptures were inspired by Hellenistic art (see Greek Art and Architecture). He was commissioned by seven popes over his career and completed numerous works in Vatican City and churches around Rome. St. Peters From 1624 to 1633 he created the altar canopy in Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. This project, shown here on the left, is a masterful feat of engineering, architecture, and sculpture, was the first of a number of monumental undertakings for Saint Peter's. Bernini laid out a huge oval piazza in front of the cathedral, flanked by colossal colonnades with double coloum each side. The aim, brilliantly realized, was to embrace pilgrims within the two arms of the great mother church, which lay at the focus of the composition. The small number of paintings by Bernini is something of a hindrance to definitive statements on attribution of this work. Some scholars have proposed a number of artists as the likely author of this work, ranging from other Italian painters to possibly a Spaniard from the circle of Velasquez. The loose brushstroke and lack of detail outside the face indicate that it may be a highly detailed sketch rather than a fully worked, finished painting, which adds to the difficulty of attributing the work.
